I was looking at Static #1 and notice that cgc says static is first appearance.I say thats wrong. My first appeance for Static was in Icon #1.I dont even see it called first cameo on ebay. They are doing the same thing with Spawn.I see Spawns real first appeance is on Stan Lee Presents:The Comic Book Greats Dec 1991.Very hard to find

I've never heard of this. So a VHS tape cover is now considered a "1st appearance"?

It gets nebulous.

I see the Icon issue says it’s a preview. Sometimes a preview is counted as a first appearance in the public eye (I’m talking to you, ASM 365) and sometimes it isn’t (100 Bullets #1, Vs. Preacher #51).

That a great way to attempt to illustrate the inconsistencies in the hobby.

You’d think we could get a set of standards.

That reads like a common reply on the CGC Boards by the older crowd that dominates the General Comics section of their forum.

A preview is a preview and an ad is an ad. It’s that simple.

No, it's not.

Spain's 1st app is Spawn #1.

Is the 2 page Who’s Who entry in Megaton Comics Explosion #1 an exception to something? It looks like an ad and isn’t (Youngblood) the team once the book got published. For example, Shaft and Badrock aren’t there.

Both CGC and CBCS show it to be Youngblood’s 1st appearance.

Correct, Static the parrot is presumed dead after the events of Infinite Crisis.

I didn't think it was. I thought it was stupid that some sites are pushing that as his first appearance.

The truth is, we’re at the mercy of the market when it comes to what issue demands the premium.

If you’re a fan of a character, it doesn’t hurt to grab previews & cameos. It makes your collection that much more complete. And if the character takes off, it’s a safe bet those books will climb in value/demand.

Everyone knows that Static's first appearance was next to Spawn and Omega Red in a centerfold poster in X-Men 1 (1991).

never been to the CGC boards but I'll take that as an ouch!!! I'm wounded!! lol!!

Maybe I'm old at heart?? I just think the whole preview and cameo and 1st appearance in an add in an industry newsletter or maybe an internal memo not available to the public thing is getting out of control.

Happy to be a lemming and let CGC/CBCS say what is the 1st appearance (not even the publishing house because there are times when the place that published the character has a different 1st appearance than the grading houses - Dark Days: The Casting anyone??)

@KatKomics You know what we always say around here: Collect what you love and you'll always be happy!! Unless what you love is live cats. Don't collect live cats, large or small...that just makes you crazy.
