I don't know if i stated it wrong or what, but I wasn't talking about MCS doing any grading. Heaven forbid.

No I was referring to CBCS's "Raw Grade" service. https://www.cbcscomics.com/rawgrade

I'm not going to be using anyone else's grading services, my horse is hitched.

I can't see any reason why the comic itself, with CBCS doing the grading, would receive anything less than it would normally regardless of whether it was going to end up in a slab or a boarded bag & sticker.

Ah I think I see what you're responding to.

I wasn't going to send them the raw books.

I was either going to send them to MCS slabbed or use the CBCS "raw grade" service FIRST and THEN send them to MCS.

I'm not letting MCS decide what something is worth based on THEIR policies or some worry of theirs about returns. I'm not a buyer I'm a seller and I need to get every cent possible.

45 years ago I was a buyer. Now it's time for some ROI.

Just an fyi if you send them CBCS Raw grade books. They will open them and regrade them so I wouldn't waste your money or time doing that.

@dfoster43 I think others have posted that MCS doesn't accept CBCS Raw Grades. They'll open it and grade the books themselves anyway. So I wouldn't do that. The last time I was looking at MCS' consignment terms, I think I saw that they will send books to be graded for you though. You could ask about that but I assume it wouldn't be any cheaper than getting them graded yourself. Maybe you'd save on shipping everything back and forth if they were going to end up at MCS anyway?

Holy Cow are you kidding me ? LOL wow.

OK well thanks for telling me. I sure didn't see that on their site.

They DID offer to SEND them to CGS or CBCS, but I figured why bother? I was only going to be doing that myself here. But yeah maybe a shipping save, maybe .. but ... yikes.

OK well 'nuff said about that, then. I'll get the ones that are in that category Raw Graded here at CBCS and sell 'em myself here or eBay or somewhere that won't open them. I'm not going to let MCS downgrade my possible ROI by a whole point of grading.

Thanks!

They also do a service where you can send books to CBCS, have them graded, then MCS will pick them up at the office for you. Save on some of the shipping costs.

@dfoster43

Over the past 2 years I've sold both slabbed and Raw through MCS consignment. I don't see any reason why I would ever sell to them directly. If your Wolverine 2,3,4 are 9.6 or 9.8, get them slabbed first. If they are 9.4 or below, I would just send them directly to MCS. They will grade them around 8.5 but everyone knows that an 8.5 MCS is nicer than a 9.0 CGC. I sent them about 25 lower to mid grade books that would be minor "wall books" for most LCS. All worth between $40-$150. They graded them tough, but I sold them on consignment and I still got 3X-4X of what the LCS offered me.

I will say this, in contrast to @EbayMafia. I've sold stuff to them directly. Comics worth $2-$10 a piece. Some of them I could have probably put on eBay and gotten a dollar or 2 more, minus fees, but the extra effort just isn't worth it. But the direct sales are pretty sweet for really low tier books you may have sitting in your collection that you just want to get out of the house/boxes/whatever (we all know that people have 8 copies of Supreme #1 laying around ).

For anything they tell you you can consign, consign them, there's no doubt you will make more money that way. But if, like me, you're also in the process of just paring the ridiculous collection you've accumulated over the years down to a manageable number, the direct sales are pretty sweet.

@EbayMafia Thanks!

I guess my assumption was lower number = lower sale price potential, but if you're saying that an MCS grade is understood to be harsher, which is what people were telling me about CBCS (i.e. more "honest" in the long run) then maybe I'll let them grade and consign the raw bagged/boarded through them.

See, in my mind you're saying if the majority of my books are worth 10$-200$ (and that's probably mostly accurate) then the cost of CBCS grading (and shipping, etc.) would have to be aggregated over the entire time that it took to sell them as opposed to maybe getting them graded lower at MCS but MCS selling them quicker even if they were sold at a slightly lower price?

I think that sounds pretty reasonable if I'm understanding correctly. MUCH appreciate the input, ya'll.

I don't know how to "Quote" posts here can someone share that tip?

But @xvipah that's very interesting. So the difference b/t consigning and selling to them directly if I read it right, is that to sell it to them directly doesn't it have to be on their "want" list?

As soon as we're done with our move I'll start taking pictures of every book front and back and just submit compare them all to their "want" list, then, that way at least I'll know if they'll even offer to buy and any they don't I can just consign? Sound right?

I think I should at least offer here, too

OH P.S. I have no "Supreme #1" but if that's anything like having 20 copies of "OMAC One Man Army #1" or "Magnus - Robot Fighter #1" then I know what you're talking about.

And yes, to sell directly it has to be on their want list. You will find that many of the comics you just don't want, they don't either But I can usually go through a long box and find 50-75'ish (about 1/5 to 1/3) or so that I can sell to them for $1-$4 a piece average. Not a bad price when you can get paid by check so there's no fees, and your only expense is mailing it to them.

HEY that worked great!

Yep I agree. I'm going to start culling all these boxes, catalogging what I have and putting them into categories, check against their want list and figuring out what should just be sold to them (if they want them) directly, what should be consigned to them, what should be slabbed, what should maybe be CBCS "Raw" graded and then eBayed ... :whew: or maybe I'll just go make a stiff drink!

OH and if anyone wants any 'OMAC One Man Army" I think they may have been mulched back in the 90's ...

As a side note, you can highlight the specific text you want to quote and then hit the quote button and it will only add in that part. Or you can quote a whole post and then delete out the parts that aren't relevant to what you want to say. These are helpful for avoiding the wall of text quotes that go five posts deep, or when someone posts 20 pictures and then someone quotes the whole thing.

@dfoster43 for consignment MCS wants raw books with minimum FMV of $50 or at the very least would sell quickly for $25. I think their minimum commission on raw books is $7. Which is quite fair if you consider the work that goes into them.

Hi Yes, thank you! I actually had already read on their site a few times but when I responded above w/ that range for my books I would send them I had forgotten.

I'll follow those guidelines of theirs and separate out the ones 50$ or more in value etc. and figure the commission and shipping etc. in the CoDB.

They and others also buy whole collections, which is something else I'm considering, but before I can make any informed decision I have to catalog all of them.

Much appreciated as always, @EbayMafia !

Im slowly moving all of my slabs to MCS. Its so much easier to just let them handle everything from collections to shipping. And hopefully I wont get a 1099 at the end of the year. I have 16 slabs in the current auction.

I've almost made it through one day of auctions after planning to not buy any comics over cover price until 2022.
