I've never complained about anyone hijacking a thread. At least not after the first day or two. If threads don't get hijacked they mostly die anyway.

My auction strategy is simple - avoid auctions when at all possible but keep an eye on possible strategic errors by sellers.

What I mean is to me auctions are great for hot items (seller perspective). Psych of auction atmosphere plus hot item = fomo based decisions.

For colder or less hyped things (call it classics vs “trendy”) auctions can be dangerous (for seller) excepting very high end, ultra low supply items.

So I usually look for less trendy items posted to auction just in case but dont participate too often.

I don’t often participate in auctions but when I do I prefer dos eq… sorry… I prefer to bid as late as possible and just set the amount to what I am willing to pay, period. I lose 95% of the auctions I enter, sometimes by small amounts. When the amount I lose by is reallly small I admit it can be a bit painful.

@Huntergreene2 - And here we have a beautiful 1.8! This was a whoops on my part. Forgot that I had pulled the coupon.

Because of the holiday, I didn't get to FedEx until Saturday, and they told me my books wouldn't get to MCS until 7/8 (today). Will they let them be in the Prime auction since it goes until the 12th or was there a cutoff date? I imagine there was, but I didn't see one on the site. Their web site can be a bit confusing and convoluted at times.

After MCS receives your books, they have to inspect, grade (unless they are in slabs), photograph, and catalog them. That all takes time and people to do it. It will be several weeks before they appear in an auction.

These are CBCS slabs, already accepted for consignment by MCS after I did their process, sent the pictures, serial no's, etc.
They told me that they'd contact me within a day of receiving them for me to tell them if I wanted them consigned as sale or auction.
I didn't expect them to be in the Prime auction but was curious if that would be an option.

@dfoster43 pretty sure they can't add books to an auction once it's started, although I'm not 100% on that.

Well I just got the email that they've received them and are beginning the process, so I guess we'll see how long it takes them to ask me whether I want them auction or sale. I hope it doesn't take long. I'd like to get them up on eBay but this was supposed to be cheaper / less fees etc.

It mostly is. It'll take a few days to get them up, then you get to decide if you want to put them in an auction, or set a BiN price. If you set a Buy it Now, they'll list it on eBay for you under their store. It's a sweet deal.

Probably a tangent to this thread but it does relate to MCS auctions and CBCS grading -- I hope it's the right thread to ask in, apologies if it isn't

So if I were going to send Wolverine (1982) #'s 2,3,4 to MCS as well, they are NOT slabbed. They are all at least the same or better condition than #1, which CBCS graded 9.4, but right now they're only bagged/boarded.

They have been in a longbox, oxygen deprived and flat as pancakes in their bags since 1982.

I'm torn on paying for slabbing for those 3.

But with the understanding that a professionally-graded title sells for more than non-graded, what about the less-expensive "Raw Grading", where they still get graded but w/out a slab?

If those are submitted to MCS auction are they treated with the same respect and get the same valuation on average as a slabbed copy?

I value the experience of you all. And I'd probably follow the same advice for most of the remaining 3 longboxes I've got. Some might be good ROI for encapsulating but many might merit from Raw Grading due to their valuation.

@dfoster43 they grade strictly to avoid returns. If you think it's a 9.4 they will probably grade it an 8.5. They provide detailed scans and buyers know they undergrade so you'll still get a good value for them.

@flanders is spot on here!!! In one of the MCS newsletters, Buddy said he tells his graders to undergrade a bit to cut returns. And over the years, I'd have to absolutely agree with him on this one, they definitely undergrade. As a buyer, I love it!!

I don't know if i stated it wrong or what, but I wasn't talking about MCS doing any grading. Heaven forbid.

No I was referring to CBCS's "Raw Grade" service. https://www.cbcscomics.com/rawgrade

I'm not going to be using anyone else's grading services, my horse is hitched.

I can't see any reason why the comic itself, with CBCS doing the grading, would receive anything less than it would normally regardless of whether it was going to end up in a slab or a boarded bag & sticker.

Ah I think I see what you're responding to.

I wasn't going to send them the raw books.

I was either going to send them to MCS slabbed or use the CBCS "raw grade" service FIRST and THEN send them to MCS.

I'm not letting MCS decide what something is worth based on THEIR policies or some worry of theirs about returns. I'm not a buyer I'm a seller and I need to get every cent possible.

45 years ago I was a buyer. Now it's time for some ROI.

Just an fyi if you send them CBCS Raw grade books. They will open them and regrade them so I wouldn't waste your money or time doing that.

@dfoster43 I think others have posted that MCS doesn't accept CBCS Raw Grades. They'll open it and grade the books themselves anyway. So I wouldn't do that. The last time I was looking at MCS' consignment terms, I think I saw that they will send books to be graded for you though. You could ask about that but I assume it wouldn't be any cheaper than getting them graded yourself. Maybe you'd save on shipping everything back and forth if they were going to end up at MCS anyway?

Holy Cow are you kidding me ? LOL wow.

OK well thanks for telling me. I sure didn't see that on their site.

They DID offer to SEND them to CGS or CBCS, but I figured why bother? I was only going to be doing that myself here. But yeah maybe a shipping save, maybe .. but ... yikes.

OK well 'nuff said about that, then. I'll get the ones that are in that category Raw Graded here at CBCS and sell 'em myself here or eBay or somewhere that won't open them. I'm not going to let MCS downgrade my possible ROI by a whole point of grading.

Thanks!
