How do you prepare for cons?15098

Collector Sebastsk8 private msg quote post Address this user
Last few I've used a backpack to take books along for signings along with extra boards and bags and some toploadere incase I make key purchases.

Sorting through the collection now for a couple cons in sept and october for signings(mostly baltimore, nice guest list there this year).

How do you organize books for signings? I have a few getting 4-5 sigs each, and then others only getting 1 or 2.

I've also just taken a backpack. For books to get signed I just group them by the signee so I don't have to sort through the whole batch to pull things out.

Definitely use a backpack. I also bring spare bags, boards and some cardboard; a list of issues I am looking to purchase; a batch of books to drop off at the CBCS table for grading (with my invoice already printed out); possibly a few books to get signed; and some books and/or slabs that I might try to trade to get a better price on something that interests me.

I scout the locations for parking and entrances if its not a familiar venue. I then verify creators that will be appearing, as well as cosplayers I might have associations with. I cross reference all the appearing creators with books I have, that might be of possible interest as well as the prices being asked for the various services.

I then shingle things in my backpack using the floor layout as a guide what order they will be required. I stash money in a few places in the pack, and on my person as well as verify I have a few credit cards, and my debit card. I then contact anyone appearing at the show I have plans for or with and verify such.

I always go the final day and stay all day. I go around early and spot any books that i might like or want and mentally mark them for revisit in the final two hours. Anything that I buy up or find myelf carrying goes back to the trunk of the car.

Pretty much everything that has been said so far plus I bring several sandwiches in my backpack so I don't have to spend so much money on overpriced convention food.

Backpack with important books, light hand truck with short boxes for toys and stuff, extra supplies, and BO repellent for those that smell not so good.

TL;DR: I separate them out by day starting with hardest to get signed, or that I plan on getting graded; only bringing the ones I'm determined to get signed each day. I use folios in a giant targus backpack that was designed to fit two x 17 inch gaming laptops with accessories. I don't look to buy anything until I get that day's signings done.

TL:
I use the Grand comic database (RIP comicbookdb) to find what issues a creator has worked on and then compare with my access database of my comics (that I haven't manually entered creators into). I then check go collect to see what might be worth something and determine what would make sense to get signed/graded vs stuff that's just fun to get signed. I try not to go more than 5/creator, but it depends on the creator and often I do no more than 5/day...unless the creator is sort of sitting there solo for a bit.

I organize them by creator in some short boxes for travel to the location of the event. Then I work-out a daily strategy and only bring the books for that day by breaking them into groups in 4-5 comic folios that fit in my giant targus backpack that I actually take with me to the con each day. If things go smoothly I'll go back to the hotel and reload for the second half of the day.

I start with stuff that's valuable/going, or signature that are going to likely have lines/take forever to be graded for the first day. Then work my way down to stuff that would be nice to have signed, or creators that are unlikely to have lines (often not an indication of talent) for later days at the con.

Early admission tickets are key for me, as are signing events; but I work out the value of the signing events based on how much the creators charge/sig.

To stay light and agile, I specify on each day which artists I will target. This way I am not hauling too much around. If there is anyone whose signature I must have, I make sure to have those books on hand until they are signed. I carry a backpack with two bcw comic folios. I also pack a tiny foldable stool, that folds up to the size of a small umbrella, so I can sit in line off the ground like a gentleman.

Cant wait for NYCC.

@JustThatGuy you hit a nerve with the BO. Some people should be charged with domestic terrorism due to their lack of hygiene

@Hcanes @JustThatGuy Absolute truth. I have a friend who had never been to a convention before and I figured he would love it. Saw him there and he said he was miserable because of the amount of people with horrible BO.
What's really bad is we both have worked for years for the prison system. We've experienced some unimaginable smells and the people were so bad there that he said he was never going back.

@Puckster It's a crowd-clearing and negotiating tactic. Just don't shower for a couple days and dealers will be quick to make a deal and get you out of their booth. Seriously though, this is disturbing but I have football friends who say that some offensive or defensive linemen will piss themselves at the start of a game just to make it miserable for the other team to touch them.

@etapi65 Never heard of that site before but that's just what I needed for my sig search. Wiki is pretty decent for looking up artists to see their bibliography but some people I couldn't find at all.

What bothers me more than the BO, is when folks go to Cons sick.
I have caught so so many Con cruds over the years and I fume when it happens.
If one good thing has come out of this pandemic is that I will be wearing masks; even when covid is completely eliminated. Ya just can't trust people to stay home with common colds and other bugs and viruses.
The BO part - ultimately its just a 5 second discomfort that I will walk away from.
Not so with Con Crud. I'm miserable for days

I usually use a back pack and bring a hard comic book holder. I brought my 18x24 print portfolio once and that was a pain to carry around.I like the back pack because it allows me to use both hands freely as I am either going through long boxes or holding a wall book to observe closer. Then I don't have to worry about setting something down on the floor or on top of other comic book boxes.

@Nuffsaid111 You might want to do a search on hygiene-related illnesses. That 5 seconds of discomfort, as you put it, at might last longer than your interaction with the smell.

Yeaaaa.... youre probably right.
Just hoping the medical mask reduces the possibility of both/either (smell/illness/both)

One thing people haven't mentioned is prints. My backpack is too small for most/some prints that I've gotten at cons without bending them awkwardly so I've been stuck carrying them around separately. The next time I go to a con I'm going to take my poster tube from my academic days (don't know anything about this specific one but something like it). The carrying strap will be nice. I'll have to roll them, but prints should survive a rolling much better than a bending.

I didn't mention that on top of my backpack, I have my camera bag, too. I take a TON of pictures. Especially the cosplayers. I saw something years ago online that I wanted to recreate but just haven't done. I want to take a small dry erase board and, if the cosplayer is willing, write down what they do in their everyday life. (Student, Doctor, waitress, etc.) Just to show how many people from different walks of life are into this culture. It's not just a bunch of basement dwellers.

For smaller prints and if i'm doing a Photo Op with a Celebrity I tend to bring along archival safe top loaders for photos. Learned my lesson many times over (and yet I still forget half the time) of paying over the top for supplies at the show. Oh and don't forget cash. Cash is king at Cons.
