I have went pretty heavy on this spec and wanted to see what you all thought. I've based this on 2 different pieces of info, the first being the movie "Samaritan" that is currently scheduled for a 2021 release, but its been delayed a few times. It stars Sylvester Stallone as Stanley Kominski, a former super hero known as Samaritan. Now the movie isn't set in Astro City or taken from the story as far as anyone knows, but Astro City #1 is the 1st appearance of Stanley Kominski, Samaritan. I don't think it needs to pull from the story to be relevant to the 1st appearance, but some disagree. I think when that trailer drops, people are going to look for the 1st appearance and see its that issue and the market is going to drive it up. The 2nd piece of info is the 2018 news that Astro City was being developed for TV by FremantleMedia. There hasn't been any news since other than a covid delay, but I think that still has solid potential as well to drive this book up whenever it starts back up. There was some 2020 news that Kurt Busiek was going to restart the Astro City comics and he hinted that there was more to be announced around the series soon. I think they may be waiting for a dual announcement regarding the TV series and the comic series, but maybe not. Either way I think this is a very solid book to spec on, plus you have an early Alex Ross cover as a bonus. It has short term potential to hit big with Stallone's movie, and it has long term potential to hit with the TV series. You can still get copies for under 20 bucks if you look, especially at LCS's. There's not many graded either, so the 9.8 market could get pretty crazy if 100+ people want a 9.8 suddenly... my middle bottom 2 are 9.8 candidates. ![]() |

@HotKeyComics This kind of speculation is right up my alley. Low risk with potential high reward. The FMV now is probably about as low as it will ever be, so even in a worst case scenario you don't lose your shirt...you can get most of your shirt back if it doesn't move up in value. It also checks the box of being a great first issue of a brilliant series, so it doesn't have to pop immediately to still have potential of paying off in the long run. The quantity is bigger than I usually go for. I like to spread my low-risk speculation out with 10-15 copies of several books so only one of them has to pop to pay for the rest and justify holding them indefinitely.

Was a great series when it came out, seemed to loose it's way eventually - would be nice if it took off. I won't be joining the spec as I'm pretty sure I have most if not all the issues off the rack back in the day - I'll just down size my collection a few books if the spec turns out to be true! Might be worth digging them out and getting graded before the hype though! |

I always thought this was a great series and have always been surprised that it's not more popular than what it is.

Anyone looking for a starting point for Astro City, I recommend the TPB Confession. It's so, so good, it's a stand alone story and it will give you pretty decent insight into the Astro City universe. If you haven't read it yet, I wish I were you. Probably read it 3 times before I donated to the library.

@HotKeyComics I'd haven't heard of the series. I went and did a search about the character. From what I could find The Samaritan's name in Astro City was Asa Martin. Is he going by a different name in the film?

I read through the first issue again and you're right, I dont see the Kominski name anywhere.? I dont know where I got that piece of info originally but you are 100% correct, Asa Martin is Samaritan in issue 1. I can't even find a link googling the two names together. I know I read it before I bought all these but... 🤷♂️ None of mine are up for sale or have been so I wasn't trying to spike it fwiw, so it is just a long term spec on the TV series. My bad everyone, I dunno how I got that one wrong. 🤦♂️ |

Quote:Originally Posted by HotKeyComics Another reason why I prefer these low risk type of speculation. Even though the information was in error, the books are still sellable for reasonably close to what you paid for them. Hold on to those, I will hold on to my 50 copies of Miracleman #1. It's like holding a lottery ticket that hasn't won yet but is always valid for future drawings. |

I believe any speculation in independent comics 1st issues by known writers is good. More low risk high reward compared to dc or marvel comics. With marvel you are paying decent money for a key that may or may not be in a future series. With independent is seem more tv shows/movies are being produced than dc. There are just more avenues for production for independent comics than ever before.

When I managed the local comic shop we had Brent Anderson do signings a few times as I have known Brent and his family for decades. We live in the same community. Kurt Busiek joined him at one store signing here in Sonoma County. I have almost every issue of Astro City signed and a few unread high grade #1s. Not to mention much if his other work including his epic work in Ka-Zar. |
