As a federal contractor I got to take some surprise vacation time (it depends on the contract, but some people aren't allowed to work if the government is closed). It was nice to have the time, and a good thing to commemorate.

The final abolishment of Slavery should be recognized, not just locally but globally, as quite possibly the biggest evolutionary leap that humanity has ever taken towards being a more moral species.

Celebrating the end of slavery in the United States as “the final abolishment of slavery” might be a bit premature and ethnocentric as slavery certainly persists to this day

It's interesting how far Juneteenth has come.

I live in Houston, 40 miles or so north of Galveston, and I grew up about 10 miles from where I live now. Houston has had a yearly Juneteenth parade for as long as I can remember. I even have ancestors who fought for the Confederacy during the Battle of Galveston. So Juneteenth and the events of June 19,1865, have been something that I've known about my whole life.

In 2000, when my wife (I didn't know her at the time) moved down to Houston from Chicago, she knew nothing about Juneteenth. Her very first exposure to Juneteenth was getting stuck in a traffic jam of people heading from Houston to Galveston to celebrate the day. Not a good way to learn about it, that's for sure. 😄

Now, here we are in 2021 and Juneteenth is officially a federal holiday. I'm not a federal employee (my wife is) and I doubt that the company that I work for would ever give us the day off for Juneteenth (they barely give us Christmas and Thanksgiving Day). Still... I think it's pretty cool.

"The arc of the moral universe is long but it bends towards justice". When we celebrate major historical reforms in government it's never because we believe that we have created a perfect society. It's because we believe that we have created the opportunity for a more perfect society.
