So, today while having a conversation with a buddy about comics I have recently gotten; I also told him that I had a few more graded for my pc. He followed up with "Great, your a slab collector". Now, I wasn't sure how to take this because out of 2,000+ comics less than 2% of my entire collection has been graded. It also got me wondering if any of you have a tipping point of when you would/do feel you have become more of a slab collector vs raw? For me that tipping point would be at least in the 20%+ range of having my pc graded.

I would say at heart I'm a raw collector but with caveats!! Above say $200 buying on line I want a slab to give some sense that there is no restoration or that the grade is indeed what they claim I grade for similar reasons - either I'm going to sell and I know that if you pull that 9.8 then you get the premium, even 9.6 etc. - gives you an idea of what it will sell for. I also grade for my PC - they don't have to be terribly valuable, but a couple hundred and a rarer book the yes I may grade - above $1k - I'm getting most of those graded with the goal to get insurance on at least those books if not my entire collection - 9k books. I also grade of course for sentimental reasons or signatures |

If you want to determine where you stand on the spectrum of preferring slabs to raw, I don't think that percentage of books is the right measurement. I would look at value of books being slabbed and reasons. If the books you are slabbing are typically worth under $100 and you are doing it because you like how they present in the slabs...you're on the slab collector side of the spectrum. If the books that you slab are worth typically over $100 and you do it because you want liquidity, security and inheritability...then you're probably still on the comic book collector side of the spectrum. Adjust the price variable as you will to determine how far along the spectrum you are. If you are spending $30 to slab $20 books...you a slab collector.

I have about 4000 books or so. Of that, I consider 1000 to be my personal collection...books I won't sell (yet) while the rest I could sell tomorrow and not think twice about it. My personal collection, I have about 400 slabbed, so 40% of my collection. I will continue to get more slabbed as well. I don't consider myself a collector of slabs. I collect comics and a portion of my comics are worthy of slabbing imo. I like books that are slabbed for different reasons.

For me, I started collecting in 67' and quit in 82', so I have a lot of the old stuff which needs and has been slabbed. The new stuff just doesn't have good enough for me to invest in or collect. That's why I quit in 82'. In the last 8 years I've been slabbing/ replacing/ buying my collection. Burt as in all things "collected" it's what you can afford and what you want to do with it.

@EbayMafia I would say I fall under typically slabbing books that have a value of $100+. There are exceptions like those that I place very high personal value on. For example my 3.5 DC Comics Presents #47, which was the first comic my wife bought me to get me back into collecting.

@cawummel I figure that you get what I'm saying though, your reasons for slabbing give you more insight than the percentage of slabs that you own. For me the size of the slab collection probably just says something about how I'm doing financially. If I'm doing well I will buy more expensive books and have more reason for slabbing. If I'm struggling I would likely sell the expensive books and have less reason for slabbing, other than to sell quickly.

Basically has always been only raw collecting for my pc and slabbed to sell. Some raw graded if I think I can get more money that way. I'm almost done getting rid of my PGX slabs I got graded when I first started getting stuff graded and didn't know the situation. If they ever have a crossover special again I might send them off...got a nice Thor 337, NYX 3, Ultimate SM 1, X-Men 266, and a lot of Walking Dead. |

I don't know what the line is between the 2. I'm not sure it really matters? I slab (or buy slabbed) stuff that's either worth a lot or means something to me. I also like to display stuff both slabbed and raw, so I might slab/buy stuff that fits that also even if it's not super expensive stuff. If you were to go by some arbitrary percentage, I'd be WAY below it and definitely a non-slabbed collector (I'm probably, at this point, less than 1% slabbed to raw). But I do like slabs quite a bit. |

If I could have every one of the raw books I have graded, I'd do it. It makes them easier to get rid of, er... sell. Plus, why would some one get all judicial over the way a person chooses to collect comic books? Get another hobby for Christ's sake and leave people alone. |

Tell him you're just playing the pyramid game like so many others are. |

Collectors are diverse so is their collecting habits. Raw, slabbed, runs, keys, high grade or readers and everything mixed in. |

Prefer raw, also slab what I like, and barely sell anything. I'm not some profiteer sitting on 43 copies of Daredevil 204 thinking that Crossbow will be the next hot villain of the MCU, so what someone wants to do with the books they own is up to them.
