C2E2 is in Dec this year. They have plenty of time to put together a guest list

Right, I should have specified that. One of the artists I follow says he's signed up for all three of those, so I think they'll turn out just fine.

I believe every state has reached the point where vaccines have been made available to anyone who wants one. The end of the mask mandate will follow shortly, I think in June. I believe that once this daily reminder is gone, people will be more inclined to return to normal state of mind and conventions will probably start looking like they did in the past.

To answer your question, no, this is not where the comics go to die. MutantMania private msg quote post Address this user
My goal is to make to at least one convention before I die....I was hoping for SDCC but it sells out in seconds so who knows

What I hear from event planners is the expectation that shows will - initially - have somewhere around 35% of their pre pandemic attendance. A similar percentage appears to be true for the creators also - somewhere around 40% of the creators are willing to be at shows.

Assuming there are no COVID-19 outbreaks after these events, 2022 may get closer to the pre pandemic levels. It will still take a few years, though, to really get back to "normal."

@flanders I went to my first one at 36 in New York. The big New York comic con and I was blown away. The following year was even better. Maybe we can do a group convention.

I wouldn't mind going to a show but the sticker shock from some of the dealers causes a tingling in my left arm.

I also have a booth for the August 7th Really Cool Comic Con. I talked to the promoter yesterday. He has a marketing company that is going to advertise it heavily in the area. I think the show will be great. For you Michigan guys, I believe he has some spaces available for the show still.

I had no idea so many people hadn't been to conventions. When I was about 12 I went to Phoenix Con (in Portland, not Phoenix) and it was immediately a "must do" part of collecting...maybe even my favorite part of collecting. It's were I learned that I was paying way too much if I bought back issues from my LCS, lol. I guess I should be grateful that my early experience came when crowds were small and attendance was easy, often at fairly small venues.
Conventions can be very educational. I learned to recognize which high grade books dealers had recently started putting on the walls...and then search the boxes for those same books in slightly lower grades.

@MutantMania @flanders @EbayMafia
think I was 27/28? when I made it to my first convention - was only because I was working walking distance from the train station in down town Toronto and had to walk past the building the convention was in...otherwise it might have been years and years later.

lol, @flanders it's brave of you to tell your story in this hyper-critical culture. Your truth is your truth man, don't let anybody pressure you into doing a convention until you're ready. You never forget your first time, I kind of wish I had waited until I was more emotionally mature.

If you wait a year then go to Heroes in NC. That's the best show I've attended in the last decade. Tons of comics, OA, and loads of creators. Go on a Friday as the crowds aren't bad. If you get in early you can get on several artists lists to get sketches. The first time I went I got to meet Mike Zeck, Skottie Young, Tim Sale, and Klaus Janson there.

Skottie Young had loads of OA on his tables. I purchased a Spider-Man page from him. He stopped signing comics and came over to chat with me when I paid for it. I guess nobody was jumping on the pages and everyone wanted an autograph on books. The line to meet him was huge. So, it turned into a great experience for me when he did that.

Also, I got sketches from both Tim Sale and Janson that day. Mike Zeck wasn't sketching but I've gotten several OA pages and 3 OA covers he drew in my collection so I wasn't disappointed.

Truly, a great show.

Love going to conventions -- I've been going since 2000 approximately. Used to go to Wizard World in Chicago back when it was an actual comic convention. Got to meet folks like Bendis, Greg Rucka, Jeph Loeb, and a lot of other great creators. Vegas has a decent convention called Amazing Comic-Con that has had Jim Lee, Greg Capullo, John Romita, Jr., and some other great creators over the past few years. Never been to SDCC. Tried the past few years but could never get a ticket.

Best con I've been to was Wonder Con in Anaheim back in 2015. A ton of great comic creators and vendors along with some great panels, but not as huge or crazy as what I've heard about SDCC.

My LCS is doing a con in Hollywood in July (called Torpedo Con) that I'd love to go to but it's just not in the cards this year. They've got Frank Miller, Jim Lee, Donny Cates, Bill Sienkiewicz and more. Pretty amazing line up.

I grew up in San Diego so going to THE con was easy for me. I went 20 years in a row, but since I moved I have not gone back. I still love going to cons even though comics is getting to be a smaller part of them. The last big con I went to was Planetcon in KC and was very disappointed to see there were like 8 comic dealers there, and 300 other dealers selling crap I had no interest in.

5 - 10 cons per year pre-pandemic for the last 20 years (SDCC, NYCC, Baltimore always)
