I was curious how many collector have their personal comics graded and slabbed. Curious as everything I have graded is for sale. I have been collecting for 45 years and have multiple boxes of my personal collection from various years snd all are No Bags or Boards. All sit in their boxes for easy access to read and they all lol mostly as nice as when I bought them off the shelves over that time. I like my personal stuff easy to read snd just kind of old school. I’m taking before Robert Bell and the invent of Comic Bags. Curious if anyone else does the same.

I bought a collection from someone that did the same if that counts. He had built in wall cabinets in a room and they were flat laid in piles on shelves.

@comixfan59 YES! This is exactly what I do. Comics are meant to be read! I also have a wide selection of hardcovers, omnibuses and bound volumes that I like to read from. The only books in my PC that are slabbed are books that are too valuable to risk handling.

I decided to have my childhood comics grade screened at a 9.8 after looking them over and determining they were worth enough to pay the price of slabbing. I felt it would preserve them and be cool to have them to display. I also think anything worth over $250 should automatically be slabbed for protection and to have a 3rd party grade assigned so that if they are stolen or lost in the many fires that have passed through my neighborhood over the years, I'll be able to get the full value on an insurance claim.

I mix, I have displays for both raw and slabbed comics in my office/comic room. Some things get slabbed, others get put in to mylar and displayed as raws, and it rotates as I see fit. I like to read my comics also, but I keep them bagged and boarded and just read them from there if I want to. Or, if they're valuable, I might buy a second, readers, copy so I can read it as much as I want. |

My sentimental personal collection is raw in a long box in my garage. Too low grade to bother slabbing. But if a book is minty or otherwise valuable, I slab it. No matter if it’s for my personal collection or for resale. |

I'm grading the books in my collection that are worth it or stand out for me, and most of it will never be graded because it isn't worth it and there's too much.

@comixfan59 - After a few mishaps over the years that caused damage (some my fault, some not), I decided to encase 100 percent of my collection. Well over 3k comics. As this was going to be costly, I had simultaneously decided to at least cut the collection to 1/4-1/3 in size and sell off the pieces that I was willing to part with which looks like it will more than offset the total cost.

Everything is bagged, boarded and boxed except for what is in my "to read" pile (usually still bagged while in the pile). I have graded books as well, and generally only start selling when my interests change.

I use the plastic BCW bins and converting all to Mylars for permanent archival storage. Few slabbed mostly for spec and to sell.. I like to read them; difficult to do so in the slab.

I buy slabs and slab books. Kindle digital books can be bought for almost any comic book published in the United States. I even bought True life secrets 23 in digital form on my Kindle. So any super hero book can be bought. So even after they are slabbed I can always read them |

I have about 900 books bagged and boarded. About 30 sentimental and key books are slabbed so far. 30 more in-process. I am kinda new at this slab thing, but values got so high and books need preservation. In addition, I have a nice long box of reprints for when I want to read a story in comic book form (whenever I want to feel 15 again.) |

I have roughly 8,000 comics and have only sent seven books to CGC and CBCS for grading. The rest are in Mylite2/FB combos. I keep them in a dark, climate controlled room in boxes. The money saved by keeping them raw has certainly allowed be to buy a few big ticket keys. |

I think if you enjoy a comic for the art, and story that slabbing it then becomes an exercise in stupidity. For my collection I tend to get a raw "reader" copy, and a raw "keeper" copy....then multiple raw lose copies for eventual flipping At that point I get myself a nice slab that is as high grade as I can buy...for a modern it has to be at least a 9.2 and for silver books at least a 7.5 As I get the chance I might upgrade the slab as high as I can go. Most of my bronze kirby collection is exactly like this, with multiple runs of new gods, mister miracle, and forever people....or my 70's zatanna material, or lois lane books , etc. For keys and silver grails, and that type of book I make sure I have a faithful reprint before slabbing the original.....obviously the window has passed where reading a hulk 1, or a Fantastic four 1, because you love the art and story is a questionable move....one single mistake could damage the book and drop the grade potentially enough to be thousands and thousands of dollars. I also am extremely cagey about displaying books , especially slabs due to potential damage. For a modern more common book I often will buy a slab just for that purpose and accepting the consequences for that book. Back when Ted was still a member for instance, he gifted me a copy of a beautiful slabbed white queen book that I use in that corner for that purpose only. For the keys I have taken them to enough cons and taken pictures with cosplayers holding them that I can print those, frame it up, and if someone breaks in and steals it, I am out a buck fifty at most. |

The majority of my collection is in a climate controlled storage because I simply do not have the room at the house to keep them. Plus a lot of other items acquired over the past 40 years of collecting. I've got everything logged into comicspriceguide.com to help me keep up with them. Right now I'm at just under 9,000. I read the new stuff I get but I just don't have the time to re-read all the back issue stuff. Because of the prices many of them have soared up to, I finally decided to start having the top ones graded and slabbed. Multiple reasons for it. Preservation and also preparing for the inevitable. That will hopefully not be for many years, but as I learned with my dad's passing five years trying to sell his collectables at a price they are worth and not just getting rid of everything for pennies on the dollar is not easy. I decided having a graded book will be much easier for my family to get a fair price out of than something raw that they no almost nothing about. |

My collection was put together relatively recently as a retirement income stream, so I graded all the more valuable books. Now it turns out I do not need the stream. Had I known, I would have graded less. On the positive side I have a personal collection now that is pretty cool, and I don’t have to hassle with selling much, or at all, and I have lots to read. I’ll miss setting up at cons though. |

I don't know if anyone else feels this way but for me submitting books and getting them professionally graded is one of the most exciting and enjoyable parts of being a collector. I had originally said that I didn't plan to slab my personal collection but I found that I enjoy the process too much to not do it. The anticipation, the adrenaline rush of finally getting the grades...it's all taken comic collecting to a new level for me in the last 15 years. It's kind of like I think I've found a treasure but I don't know for sure until @sborock and crew have verified that it's a treasure. It's a much saner alternative to gambling for entertainment. It also makes the prospect of selling more viable...which again added a whole new dimension to the fun of being a collector.

I only did that the first of my few subs, and was thrilled to see the "NM" X-Men #50 I purchased in 1989 through those yellow Mile High comic book ads got a 9.6- I thought it would be a 9.2 It all evened out (kinda) as the Hulk 181 got a 6.0 when I thought 7.0 (which it later got after a CPR). For no particular reason I checked on grades for the other couple subs. |

@Siggy I always check. I’m constantly checking the site to see if the grades are in once books hit the grading stage. I’m putting a batch together now & I’m considering waiting to be surprised with this batch. It will be quite a test of my willpower. |

Everything worth slabbing gets slabbed eventually. Every book in my collection is either slabbed or in a queue to be slabbed. I used to not check the grades of my books....now I can't hold off. I figure it's a double shot of happiness, lol! Once when you check (hopefully) and then again when they arrive....the grades aren't a surprise but holding those crystal clear slabs is pretty cool!. |

I check the grades as soon as they're available. But not on the cell phone (if that's even possible), I wait until I'm at home sitting in front of the computer. I block the screen so that I can only see one grade at a time and I slow-roll them for full entertainment value.
