Was given a run of x men 1-10....bought raw rough copies of Amazing spiderman 1 and Fantastic Four for 50 dollars for the pair. Paid less than 500 dollars for all of my keys..Hulk 1, TTA 27, Avengers 1, TOS 39, Showcase 22, etc. Probably best deal was buying a single collector owned, read and mylared run of x men from 95-300 back in late eighties...for around 700 dollars. My hawkman 4 cost me 6 dollars back in the day....my Giant size x men 1, in 8.0 range was a 71 dollar purchase.... How do you really choose 1 example? I think the longer you are in the hobby the better your deals look....whenever I get too cocky about my luck so far, my older friend reminds me he bought most of his stuff "off the stands at cover price"........yikes |

Won a raw Fantastic Four 48 on eBay in 2014 that the seller approximated to be a 7.5. Got it for $237.00 and CGC graded it a 6.5. Still have it.

I have been fortunate enough to have found quite a few deals in the last 20 years or so. I think a couple of the top five was a complete run of Uncanny X-Men and Walking Dead a few years ago for $2k and complete Daredevil run for $200 |

I've missed dozens and dozens of times; but when I have hit my best deals have all come from yard sales/garage sales. I have found blue chip major major keys for a U.S. buck or two over the years and plentiful regular keys for the same amount. |

Bought one of my Hulk 181s at a flea market in 1988 for 25¢. I read it many times, my friends read it, so it's been well loved. I probably bought it in FN condition and now it's VG at best, still ungraded.

Many moons ago, I went to one of the local Salem Oregon book thieves store. You know the guys that buy books for pennies and sell for 10 bucks, then ebay off the priceless gems. They had a random selection of comics too. Well on this day the boss must have been out, because I saw a Hulk 102, Fantastic Four Ann #3 (marriage of Sue & Reed), FF Ann #6 (first Annihilus) and Sub-Mariner #12 sitting on the counter (all in the 5.0-7.0 range, slightly read). Normally books were as-marked or 1/2 of cover price. So I asked the millenial running the register, "So how much are these? They're not marked... Half off cover price?" "Nope, they are minimum $1 each for un-marked books" Looking at me like "You idiot". ...ZIP opens the wallet... The hardest part was watching the hipster man-handling the un-bagged books to count them. CRINGE... A small price to pay to say the least. |

In 1984 I walked into a used bookstore in Bisbee, Arizona. The guy had a glass case with about 10 comics, so I asked if he had some more . . . yup, upstairs in a small room were thousands. He had bankers' boxes so I asked what he would ask if I filled up a box? $75. So I filled up two boxes. Including 2 FF49s, (one recently graded 8.5 by CBCS) and an Iron Man 1, GSX1, X-men in the 90s and up through 139, etc. Of course the value wasn't what it is today, but I still own every one of those books. I returned the next day, but he had called a LCS and made a deal to clean out the rest. He told me he thought I wasn't coming back . . . but I got the best of it, although I did pass on all the Hulks as I just hated that title . . . probably a 181 in there somewhere.

$300 for about 300 books at a yard sale today via Craigslist. These were within the 300. I kid you not. The Invincibles were'nt even in the box; just laying on the floor strewn about. I think I did alright for about a buck apiece. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() |

I look back now at all the books that I bought off the rack for cover price that are the big ticket items now. ASM 298, 299, 300, 316, 361, etc. Star Wars: Heir to the Empire 1 Aliens 1 In the early days of Ebay, I bought a long box of Silver Age books for a few hundred. Came out to about $2-3 a book. None of them were worth a ton of money back then but there were a ton of keys in there that I still have. An extremely low grade Batman 121 being the top out of them. |

These may not be the best in terms of percentage. In 1989 at an LCS I purchased a Hulk181 off the wall for $120. It later graded at 7.0 2012 I purchased my AF15 CGC 0.5 for $2400 off the CGC Forum's Sales threads. Last year off of this Forum I purchased a GSX1 CBCS 6.5 for $1500 that later CPR'd into a CGC 7.5 ![]() ![]() ![]() |

Years ago I went to an estate auction which advertised "thousands of comics", so I decided to take a shot. The premise was funny... Each cardboard box had 200 comics in them, and if you won a bid, you can buy as many boxes as you want for the bid you won it at. Meaning, the bid started at $5, and my competitor went to $10, I bid $15, and so on. I won the bid at $100. So, while the next auction took place, I picked out the boxes I wanted. All the "good stuff" was already picked over, but I came out of there with 400 comics for only $200. There was lots of Bronze age DC and Marvels and Gold Key comics as well as a few modern Marvels Because I had large runs of many titles, I would sell them as lots at a "discounted" price. For example, I had a twenty-five issue run of Gold Key's "Turok: Son of Stone" that I sold for $75 (cost: $12.50, profit: $62.50) After only a few auctions, I recouped my investment, and the rest was gravy. The only regret was letting go some Amazing Spider-man's and Peter Parker's. |

I can't really count all the books I bought back at shows and from shops back in the 1970's and 1980's; since they were not really deals at the time. And I can't count the books I purchased new from that time period either, as I paid cover price just like everyone else. Looking at recent price jumps, I'd say pretty much every X-Men and ASM that I purchased within the last 5 years has increased, with many worth 2X to 4X now (especially X-Men 1-7 and 9). Last summer I took a shot and bought a Modern book off the wall at my LCS for $270. I would have preferred to have bought a SA or BA book, but I saw nothing that grabbed my attention. And I hadn't bought anything at a store in so long, I just had to buy something. I had it pressed and graded by CBCS and it received a 9.6, so not a bad deal at all. ![]() |

I remember paying 30 dollars for my JIM 103, later graded an 8.0 I bought boxes of silver age tales of suspense, tales to astonish, strange tales, and golden age books like Lorna of the Jungle, and Cave woman most priced below 2.00 and everything below 5.00 The store was a little , out of the way, specialized shop that only sold back issues, cassette recordings of various radio programs, and odds and ends. It was called the "shadows Sanctuary" and the owner had a good living of it, with his residence being the top floor of the building and the comic store taking up the ground floor. ....older guy named Ivan. I once asked him why he never marked any of his books up when they went up in the price guides and he said...if it wouldnt sell yesterday for my price, why raise the price today? And if I could afford to sell it yesterday at the price marked what could have changed to make me ask more today? Fair enough...i bought tons of stuff from Ivan even though sometimes they were rougher shape...hard to pass up silver age like those, priced at 94 cents or 1.94 for one in better shape. |

I watched that guy get so many silver keys like that and they would vanish as quickly as they appeared....poof |
