What's your best comic deal?14796

past performance is no guarantee of future actions. KatKomics private msg quote post Address this user
To counter the comic book regret thread lets look on the positive side of things!!!

Lets also try to go for purchases other than fresh off the rack!

3 of my better buys

Sandman 1 - 15 for $80 about 10 or 15 years ago (#1 in for press/grading at CBCS)
Ultimate Fallout 4 for $40 just after the movie - would never have bought it if my son didn't like the movie so much! (in for press/grading at CBCS)
Hulk 180 for $120 - again about 15 years ago, since then signed by Mr. Trimpe and Stan - currently CGC 8.5 SS but will likely get it pressed and hope for a bump!

As the saying goes - buy what you love and you will never be disappointed! Even if Sandman had never gone up in price it would still be one of the better runs (story wise) and I would still have been happy to have it even at dollar bin FMV

I’m sure I don’t have nearly some of the cool finds that some folks do on here, but I did manage to buy a Dark Knight Returns #1 and Detective Comics #880 for around $90 each back in 2015 and both ended up as 9.8s. Was pretty thrilled about that.

Also stumbled upon a really beat up copy of Batman #251 at an antique mall for $8. Put it on the bay for an auction starting at .99 and it sold for over $200.

Based purely on numbers...

3123$ for a hulk 181 cgc 9.6

689$ for detective comics 298 cgc 9.2

Although on hulk I over paid at the time. I should have bought it outright but got into a bidding war exceeding the original buy it now price. =(

My son sold me a She Hulk 1 for $20 8 years ago. Newsstand, I got a 9.8. Figured it was 9.2 or so. He will get it back one day.
My brother sold me Daredevil 1 6.0 about the same time for $1300. A friend of his sold me X Men 1 6.5 white pages for $9000 16 months ago. They won’t see those books again.

I sold a Umbrella Academy FCBD for $100. That’s a return on investment of infinity.

I recently sold a bunch of Marvel Universe card sets for about $1000 total...probably paid less than $200 back in the day.

Also have sold several Dark Horse Star Wars comics for $100 that I paid less than cover for.

If I was willing to sell my Ultimate Fallout 4 or ASM300 (which I’m not) I’d be in over $1000 profit on those.

It's ultimately going to come back to XM1. Bought it raw for $2700 in 2015. Graded by CBCS at 5.5 so my initial investment has paid off.

About 3 years ago I bought 12 long boxes for $4000 some highlights:

X-Men 2-325
GSX 1
Hulk 180-182
About 50 of the first 100 issues of Avengers
About 40 of the first 100 issues of Fantastic Four

This purchase is what got me back into collecting after a 20 year break.

My best deal was about 25 years ago. I bought...

Venom Lethal Protector #1 Gold and Black variant covers

PLUS

A low grade Amazing Fantasy #15

...for $400 bucks at a small comic show in Dallas.

Reasonable, but a good deal at the time. And the long-term payoff is immense.

+++++

Runner-up was from around the same time period. I traded my high-grade copies of the Wolverine Mini-Series #1-4, Dark Knight #1-4 (first 3 issues signed by Miller), and Uncanny X-Men #94 all for nice copies of Amazing Spider-Man #8, #12, and Annual #1. It got me closer to having the full ASM set that I have today.

Aside from things that have naturally just gone up in value, I got an X-23 #1 Dell'Otto variant on eBay for $400 something. I've never seen an auction end that low, and I rarely even see them raw. 9.8s regularly went for about $1500 at the time. I sent it in and it came back 9.8. Signed by the writer to boot.

It's hard to say that what I got were great deals since, back in the day, the prices I paid were just the going rate. Anyone could have gotten the same deals.

With that said:

Giant-Size X-Men #1 - Bought for $120 from its original owner who had a table at a show in Dallas. When I bought it, the book had already been signed by Dave Cockrum. CBCS has since verified the signature and graded the book as a 9.6.

Fantastic Four #48 - Bought for $275 at a small show in Houston. CGC graded it as a 9.2.

A number of others... ASM #129 that graded a 9.2 (sold to a forum member) comes to mind.

X-men #1 purchased 36 years ago for $30, graded a CGC 3.0.
Crime Suspenstories #22 for $40 about 30 years ago that came back as a CGC 5.0.
4 Preacher #1 for .25 each that came back 2-9.8, 1-9.6, and a 9.0.

That's pretty hard to beat on ROI. Even NG that's got to be worth thousands of dollars. Anyone have any guesses? Can't find any sold data on an NG or incomplete.

Was given a run of x men 1-10....bought raw rough copies of Amazing spiderman 1 and Fantastic Four for 50 dollars for the pair. Paid less than 500 dollars for all of my keys..Hulk 1, TTA 27, Avengers 1, TOS 39, Showcase 22, etc.

Probably best deal was buying a single collector owned, read and mylared run of x men from 95-300 back in late eighties...for around 700 dollars.

My hawkman 4 cost me 6 dollars back in the day....my Giant size x men 1, in 8.0 range was a 71 dollar purchase....

How do you really choose 1 example? I think the longer you are in the hobby the better your deals look....whenever I get too cocky about my luck so far, my older friend reminds me he bought most of his stuff "off the stands at cover price"........yikes

Won a raw Fantastic Four 48 on eBay in 2014 that the seller approximated to be a 7.5. Got it for $237.00 and CGC graded it a 6.5. Still have it.

I have been fortunate enough to have found quite a few deals in the last 20 years or so.
I think a couple of the top five was a complete run of Uncanny X-Men and Walking Dead a few years ago for $2k and complete Daredevil run for $200
