A question about Reholdering14723

Collector mediaslave private msg quote post Address this user
So let's just say I have a CBCS book that I want reholdered, but am a tad bit suspicious of the grade. If I sent it in for a reholder and they see the book and say "9.8 my balls", will they automatically regrade it or just continue with the reholdering?

Its not an overwhelming suspicion on the grade, just a bit, but still....

I am not sure about CBCS, but there was a recent instance of CGC downgrading on a reholdering.

@mediaslave If you have a question about the grade I say just have it regraded.

Unless the case has been compromised or the book is significantly and obvously damaged, I wouldn’t count on confirming the grade as part of the SOP for reholders. Sure, someone along the production chain may question it and kick it up to a grader but I would consider it an exception and not the rule.

Additionally, if you do a reholder and it comes back unchanged you wouldn’t know if it was just reholdered without a second look or if someone took a look at it and thought it was in fact a 9.8. so your doubts would still remain.

Yeah I saw that, and honestly good for CGC. Its the right thing to do.

I don't want the right thing. I want my CBCS 9.8 in a fancier case.

I think "re-holdering" is a misnomer. The books get re-evaluated, if not fully re-graded. They're not going to just automatically put it in a new slab without looking at it.

@Murmonster - I don’t have a link, but I think it involved a GA Captain Marvel whose cover became detached somehow. I am sure other members can provide more information (or correct me if I am all wet).

It's like the Roach Motel for comic collectors. chester15 private msg quote post Address this user
If you send a book in to CGC to be re-holdered, it CAN be adjusted. It is stated on their Services page:

"ReHolder

A comic book in a CGC holder is encapsulated in a new CGC holder. The grade assigned to the book should not change, unless any damage occurred post-encapsulation, in which case the grade will be adjusted accordingly. To qualify, the book must still be encapsulated in its original CGC holder."

I have heard of it happening, and many CGC forum have comics they call NLTC (never leaving the case), I think it's termed. Because they know it's over-graded and don't want to chance it going down.

If they get a visibly damaged case in to reholder, they should be looking at it suspiciously, checking for damage to the comic. If there is damage, they certainly can't just slap on the previous grade. On the flip side, I doubt there has ever been a time when they thought the reholder comic should be UPgraded.

I haven't checked what CBCS has for a policy on the subject.

I recently had 10 of my CBCS books re-holdered simply because I wanted them in the new CBCS cases. All successfully were re-holdered. It never even crossed my mind that they wouldn’t.
Barring some obvious damage to the slab I have to believe success rate is pretty darn high.

I'm not so much worried about damage post encapsulation, as I put them in a box and never touch them really. I am worried about it being a soft 9.8 and them deciding to fix this. Is there any way to send it with the condition that they don't reholder it if they think the grade is going to change?

@mediaslave

Probably not. I would assume they would want to reduce any and all instances of a CBCS book floating around that doesn’t match the grade.
