I need your help! Blind/low vision accessibility issues with comic readers14707

Hello everyone-

Its been a while again since I posted on here again. Some of you may remmember my son's story, other's of you may be new- so just a quick synopsis again

From late November to January my 15 year old son lost most of his central vision. He is now legally blind and off the eye charts. His vision is now measured at "counting fingers" at one foot. This was due to an EXTREMELY rare mitochondrial disease called leber's Hereditary Optic Neuropathy.

He has been coping and making the neccesary adaptations such as using audio and has begun cane training and using braille. All in all he has been in high spirits.

One of the most devastating parts of this- maybe even more for me than him- is that he was the one of my 3 boys that rully shared this hobby with me. We have adapted somewhat to collecting slabs- but really he was always a reader and misses reading my comics.

For a while as the vision was deteriorating he could use magnification and zoom to read on Marvel Unlimited, DC, Kindle, comixology etc. Now he can not read any of the text. He can howeever see pictures when they are enlarged/zoomed.

We have discovered what appears to be an accessibility issue. If you want to watch a movie or tv show you can get Audio Description. If you want to read a book, you can get audio, if you want to read your screen- you can use voiceover/JAWS. Apparently if you want something to read the comic word bubbles on any of these apps- you can go kick rocks. I have contacted Marvel and they said they are not required to make comics accessible.

So what I was wondering if some of you might be able to do is send an email(- or 2?) and simply ask any of these companies why they have not made any of these apps compatible with screen readers for the low/visually impaired. I don't know if this can do anything, but I feel its worth a shot.

We seem to live in a society today in which that when enough people bithch about something, it often gets done.

I don't have a specific email address for any of these companies- so I have been annoying and just sending emails to any one that I think might read them,

There is definitely a gap in accessibility in regards to these apps working with screen readers. To a certain extent, I don't even think it is malicios, I just don't know how many people have brought it to their attention.

So if anyone wants to take a few minutes to send an email to Amazon, Apple, Marvel, DC, Image etc. and explain that there are accessibility issues for the blind, maybe we can get something changed

Thanks all

...and thanks again for rallying to help me get that Daredevil a while back!

Let me check with my Wife on this... She might know some tricks to get a screen reader to work with those apps.

I appreciate it- but we are pretty sure that nothing works. The main tools are Voice over or Jaws, and they do not pick up the bubbles. We tried something called seeing AI, but that jumps all over the page and it is not very effctive

Maybe not current, but seems like it might be at least a little helpful?

Thats actually very interesting. So that is a prime example of what I was mentioning, there is no real accessibility for comics. But actually what he says is 100% a blueprint for how it can be done

I don't know if you caught it, but there was a link in there for a place where the text was transcribed to allow for the readers to work with comic stories (some at least).

The last time we tried it, no screen readers work on any of the comic apps... there is always the potential for operator errors though lol

Here is an article about Marvel partnering with Dreamscape to produce many of their comics as audiobooks

The article is from 2019 about the availability of 35 comics but the agreement was for more. Looks like they are available through Marvel’s Apple storefront, Audible, and 42 are free via Hoopla, a public library distribution app.

Available titles include Daredevil: Man Without Fear, Kraven’s Hunt, X-Men Days of Future Past, and others

Is your son a Star Wars fan? The 1981 radio drama is on YouTube & if I remember correctly the voice of Luke Skywalker is Mark Hamill. I have not listened to this for years but remember the sound effects are awesome! The same YouTuber also has Empire & Return of the Jedi on his channel.

Good God, I am so sorry to hear sbout this. I am 62 and have a real difficult time reading comics because the dialogue boxes snd word balloons are do damn tiny snd and the color combinations they use for them is beyond insane as they don’t mesh making it very difficult to read most times. I miss the larger hand lettered print that was mostly black lettering on white balloons snd dialogue boxes. I can only begin to imagine what it is like for your Son. My sympathies but what a brave young Msn to have a positive attitude with all that. My best wishes snd of course I will write snd out by 2 cents in getting word out that they need to make changes or put out comics with large print snd other media got conics to be read and enjoyed. Hang in there.

I work where we have to make our documents (word, PDF, everything web based) accessible for screen readers and it is very time consuming to put in all of the ALT tags for images and construct/edit everything so the reading order is correct.

Sorry, not very helpful, just wanted to share. Good luck!

Someone brought it up during last month’s book club and said the same thing. I haven’t listened to it myself but I gifted the cd set to my best friend to listen to on her commute.
