Biggest improvement I would be tickled to see is carrying newsstand/direct edition designation beyond 2000.
Marvel had newsstand distribution through 12/2013, DC into 11/2017. Independents up through 2019, maybe later.
I’d be happy to offer up what I know to CBCS on the subject to help keep things accurate.
This is an issue your competitor has fell behind on as well; they designate some newsstands across all years, inconsistently. This is further reason to jump on it and be the best.

I second the notion of working more closely with MCS. I use MCS a lot, so I’m a bit biased.

Yes, MCS is awesome as well as awesome to CBCS.

I am not 100% sure about the newsstand issue, but will bring it up at the ops meetings.

2) The submission tracker very inadvertently gives different info for status based on whether you check the page or the invoice. It’s nice to check the invoice because you know a little more info (rejected pre-screens, etc.) I think it’s probably just a data parsing thing, but it’s worth looking in to.

3)Keep yo with the typeform for AW work. I live in Minnesota where we have a lot of small cons where it’s great to be an AW for your own books. Maybe even like a facilitator option for these smaller cons? Dan Jurgens and Jen Bartel both live here and come to our micro shows.

4) maybe a part time gig for local shows would be a good option. Like “hey we’ll buy your pass to (random con) in exchange for being a witness for the day. I’d sign up tomorrow.

5) it seems like one cool opportunity would be to open an office in Canada. I think you’ll hear a lot of that though. Not really my spot.

Overall, CBCS has a superior process and product. I never doubt the grades I get like I have with CGC now. The people like Darryl who answer the call are great. Being in Dallas is great, too!

Keep up the good work, Steve!

After a 2+ decade “vacation” from comics, I returned about 7 years ago with renewed interest and passion. I was very curious about third party grading and slabbing, and did some research about the three companies that were offering these services. Then at a local convention I stopped by the booths of both CGC and CBCS. Needless to say, I was blown away by the knowledge, passion, and friendliness of the CBCS staff (especially versus the aloofness of the other guys). At that moment I made up my mind to only submit to CBCS.

Over the years I have continued to submit to CBCS, and make sure I stop by and talk to them if they are at any local conventions (and I really like dropping off books in person). I have yet to meet anyone at their booths that wasn’t courteous, knowledgeable, and genuine. Steve B. is the most knowledgeable and experienced grader on this planet, and Daryl and Jesse O. constantly go out of their way to help people out (and they all are great guys too). And I have been able to meet dozens of amazing intelligent and trustworthy people on the CBCS forum over the years, many that I now consider friends.

Nobody’s perfect, so there is always room for improvement, and CBCS has improved in many ways. The new cases are amazing (I am hoping for a reholder special). The population report/census was finally made available. In-house pressing is running smoothly (and in the same location as grading). Now I look forward to Magazine slabs and possibly a registry.

TATs have fluctuated wildly over the years, and I don’t know how that can improve. It’s not like you can call a temp service and get a few extra graders during busy times. It will be interesting to see what happens when the convention circuit returns, pumping thousands more books into the mix. And with the recent increases seen in comic prices (and submissions too) maybe the top dollar values per tier should be bumped up a bit before too many books have to be submitted in the top tiers.

Things that need to be changed/improved/addressed (IMO) are customer service and the issues with the Canadian Office. I have never really had any issues personally with customer service, but just a quick read of some of the threads will tell you there are major problems. This reflects badly on the company and used to be one of the strong points of CBCS. The Canadian Office was originally another positive for CBCS, that has become problematic, even before the C crisis. Hopefully things in both areas will improve soon.

I like the new cases, and obviously cant complain about the pricing or turnaround.

The only things I like more about CGC would be the custom labels(although they could maybe be done a little differently, but it's a fun addition), and I do like their label design a little better(font, print placement etc).

The other thing which generally probably just comes with time and size of the company would be exclusive signings. Especially during covid, CGC seems to have had a ton, and even more with shops that participate in their witnessed sig program that had signings. The only thing I see they do that could be done better is grouping artists/writers. A perfect example is Michael zeck, john beatty and jim shooter who do a good bit of group signings for secret wars 8. I know the logistics of some of that could be difficult, but I would jump at the chance to get something like mcfarlane, michelinie, milgrom and bagley for a group signing opportunity(I'm a venom/carnage junkie, but you get my point).

Thanks for the invite Steve!

Change/Improve:
Slab Only: labels should have all the same information a graded label has except for the grade.

Website: real time/accurate progression of what stage clients' books are at.

Customer Service: better equipped, more visibility, higher empowered client reps.

Keep Doing/Done Well:
Grading standards!
Cases! Best on the market!
Hobby friendly focus!
Transperancy!
Labels: Personally, I love the labels. Classic, understated, informative, easy to read.

@sborock

1) I think my foremost change has to be improvements with customer service. I won’t beat a dead horse on this one but I think getting a response within 24-48 hours is not an unreasonable expectation.

2) Related to the first. Internal communication needs to be improved. I’ve had instances where I would get a response, sometimes even from Darryl that a request or change to my order has been acknowledged and notated on the order only for that very change to have been missed when the books actually go into production.

3) Possibly related to number 2. This past year I have been doing a lot of mail-in sketch cover commissions. Typically the idea is to include all the CBCS paperwork with the sketch cover so that the artist has as little to fuss around with as possible. Unfortunately it often means having to put in a placeholder date for the signature/sketch. These can turn out to be way off of the actual completion date. I think current policy is to go with the date of the invoice which makes little sense to me since the artist has to include a signed CBCS form where they attest to the date completed. Shouldn’t CBCS go by that date in cases of mail-ins? Getting dates corrected is one of the issues I was referring to in number 2 above.

4) I think CBCS should consider eliminating the ART label and expanding the slab-only tier. As it is, slab-only seems incredibly similar to the Art Label in that they are both ungraded, however Art labels are included in the population report while slab-only are not. It is also extremely strange that Slab-Only is exclusively for verified signature books. If the Slab-only option could be used for unsigned, witnessed, and verified books then you could simplify things by removing a redundant option.

5) The My Comics section of our dashboard should be expanded. This may essentially be a registry but we should be able to add and remove books from this section as we buy and sell books that we may not have had slabbed ourselves. Of course we should still retain an order history but the My Comics section feels more like a collection showcase. Maybe allow us to add scans to the grader’s notes pages. This might require some moderation to ensure that the book in the scan has the correct serial number.

6) The dashboard options should be expanded to allow users to do some simple maintenance and review procedures so we don’t have to contact Customer service with minor things. Specifically things like cancelling orders, adding and removing books from invoices, or adding and removing signatures. These could also be implemented as order update requests that need to be confirmed internally.

This should also include estimated turnarounds specific to our orders and ability for CBCS to post alerts of delays or issues globally throughout the Company or specific to our orders. For example, if there is a delay specifically for pressing there could be a notice on my dashboard alerting me of the delay and allowing me to cancel or request to cancel my pressing if I would rather not wait.

The order tracking should also be expanded to include pressing progress (this may already be implemented) and progress on mail in signature opportunities

An interesting and unique option would be to allow us to add an incoming tracking number. I assume CBCS might scan their packages before they are formally unboxed and received. This could be toed to the incoming tracking number we shared so that we can know the package has been received even if it will be some time before they are unpacked.

7) I wouldn’t mind seeing the forums switch to a more fully-featured message board platform that can support sub-forums, each with their own specific sticky posts to better organize topics to our interests.

I might come up with some more if I think on it but these are the ones on my mind at the moment.

Things I like:
The ease of submitting

The quality of the grading and slab

The simplicity of the label

The lack of attempting to squeeze every dollar possible out of the process

Things that should be better:
Customer service response time/rate (when I get a response it's great, it's a question of if/when)

Clarity of submission status (where exactly are my books in the process? with full recognition that large amounts of time are "sitting around"

Clarity of pricing (with options like press screen, for example, it's often impossible to tell which books have been pressed because you just get billed with no marker as to what happened)

On behalf of our neighbors to the North, you have to do something for Canada. The border closing is beyond CBCS' control, of course, but the wait times for shipping, unclear differences between direct and Canadian submissions, and so on have led to a lot of valid complaints in various threads

Things that could be better:
I personally like the label but apparently others don't

It's been a while, but when I've been at cons with CBCS the table has been understaffed. It was hard to get someone to come with me to witness signatures

You have to magically make CBCS slabs auction for as much or more than CGC slabs so that we stop getting threads locked over arguments that go around in circles

All I can offer is the perspective of a newbie coming over from a premium cgc subscription, but I would add my support to changing the membership bonus to a straight credit that could be applied however. Bonuses are nice in any form, but letting us choose how to use it is even better.
Also maybe a discount to regrade cgc cases.

Other than the customer service topic, I really enjoy your product.

The new slabs are great!

And it’s great how friendly and accessible everyone at CBCS is.

As far as ideas:

An app! Let me scan my slabs, give me status updates on my order, offer a trading post and all on my phone.

I doubt it’s worth the cost, but consider custom slabs.

For example, I’ve got X-Men 1 and a facsimile and I’d like to show them both off. How about a side by side slab or slab holder?

Great question!

Great things about CBCS:

The forum is friendly and well moderated in my experience.

The free graders notes are fantastic.

In my experience looking at hundreds of slabbed books, I trust CBCS grades more than any other, especially for expensive 9.8 moderns.

CBCS holders have no newton rings. I've never seen one anyways. I also haven't seen any puddling, creep engine, or loose book issues.

One way CBCS might improve their labels and make them different/better than CGC would be to design them with tiny icons for things like RESTORED, INCOMPLETE, DIRECT EDITION, NEWSSTAND, etc. I'm talking small, like the size of an emoji. You'd end up with fewer words and a cool visual way to communicate that information.

Perhaps have a small percentage of the revenue from special signings go to the Hero Initiative?

I changed my tune on signings. For a while, I agreed with those who thought they only slowed down the TATs of normal submissions. But after remembering how legendary creators like Gene Colan and Dave Cockrum had medical and financial hardships in their latter years, I'm all for creators getting a nice signing payday in their prime, because they can't work forever. (Like Jim Starlin who injured his hand).

Having a bit of the proceeds go to a charity for comic creators gives submitters a good reason to be patient and reminds us that creators have real lives off the page, bills to pay, families to support, mistresses to keep happy, lawyers to hire so they can get a decent royalty from Marvel Studios, etc...
