Video: 5 Ways CBCS is BETTER Than CGC14594

I always love the underdog and I really like the new CBCS slabs so I have been sending all my latest submissions to CBCS That Being said I cannot dispute any of @mediaslave comments. I think his comments are all very reasonable and non-vindictive. And based on simple common sense facts. |

Whoa whoa people....so we agree that grading is about equal, cases too (I've been hit always with newton but I have bought some without and they look just fine!) Other than customer service and stable of quality creators who will only use your SS service not sure there is much else CBCS can do....market perception is still in favour of CGC and likely will be for some time. Don't think there is any counter to that! I do however think higher grade or rare books it makes less of a difference....again because product vs product is basically even. At the time I sold my Brave and the Bold 54 CBCS 7.0 for $465 the FMV was $475, I call that equal and with less than 1,500 graded between the two companies and only 105 in 7.0 whoever was looking for 7.0 likely didn't care if it was CBCS or CGC CBCS is doing the right things though..smaller conventions get people like me to submit in person, changing to Yellow from Red for Verified signature was a plus....many don't like the label...I'm ok with it but would 95% expect an updated label to more closely align with customer expectations (although really would be silly to straight up copy CGC) if/when CBCS gets magazine that will again be a positive move. Steve has in the past mentioned CBCS current staffing and CGC staffing levels when he left and CBCS seems to be on a similar or faster growth than CGC was originally. One could say CGC was fighting to create the market but I counter that CBCS is fighting the incumbent...maybe a more daunting task! |

For books others submitted, you have to buy the notes. Supposedly the notes at CGC are meant primarily as grader-to-grader, not really an "appraisal" approach. And not all things are noted - like if it has a very visible subscription crease, probably not noted. It's obvious, you can't miss it. So maybe to point out a light stain so that the follow-up grader doesn't miss it and wonder why the first grade is so low. Or areas of light bends or fine spine ticks. I have had 9.6 books with notes, and 9.0 with no notes. It's a spin of the wheel. |

With the right moves they could make a massive jump in market share... But I dont have faith that they know what those moves are, or have the people to do them. That's a shame. It's funny you bring up the yellow label due verified because I ordinal think it was a horrible move and weakened their brand considerably. Sure it appealed to their base and maybe boosted sales, but I showed it to a group in in fit marketing and all agreed that it was a pretty transparent move, and looked suspiciously like cost cutting too... But last time this got discussed the thread got locked. |

CGC may have been the leader in this space but if they dont get their act together fast they will lose that position. In the last 6 months their grading is not that consistent and their turn around times are not good. You can find plenty of 9.8s with multiple spine ticks. The current image is that they are throwing a bunch of newbie graders on books just to crank them out. And to top it off they just added a price increase. There are a lot of collectors and some pretty big time dealers on social media who are very upset with CGC. If it continues like this it will only be a matter of time before CBCS takes the lead. | ||

@mediaslave lol! I'm a finance guy so marketing or what people want is crazy to me (take my wife for instance...no take me wife!!) Raised by hippies in a town with 3,000 people I almost always buy no name (produced by the same producers of the name brand most times) try not to wear other peoples advertising on my clothes and frequent value village to score cheap brand name clothes or other stuff...do they even make new air popcorn poppers? I blame it on my parents...raised frugal...except I do like my comics and my sail boat and going on holiday!...at least I don't make my own candles or yogurt like my parents did....although I think I have the yogurt machine somewhere.... |

But it doesn't happen as often as you think oh, it's not in the percentage that you think it is, and it happens with both companies. |

One side says: I like CBCS because they have better cases, lower prices, shorter TAT's, more consistent grading and they try to stay connected with their customers. The other side says: I like CGC because they have prettier labels and it's what most of the other sheep seem to like. Best I can tell, it really comes down to that. The only 2 sustained Pro-CGC arguments I've heard are "Prettier Labels" and "everyone's doing it". |

I personally love the new CBCS slab and label, but again that’s just my opinion. Hopefully CBCS will continue to work on improving their brand and weak customer service. while the census was a step forward for CBCS, their lack of a set registry will continue to put them at a Hugh disadvantage. CGC’s long established book registry is a VERY powerful reason people remain so loyal to CGC. The lack of a viable book registry ensures CBCS will struggle to ever gain any market share from a long established juggernaut like CGC. CBCS has carved out a nice little nitch in the hobby, but weather they have the determination or resources to gain any significant market share from CGC and become more than a second tier company has yet to be seen. I’m personally rooting for the under dog and the daunting task they face if they are ever going to establish enough market share to pose any real threat to CGC |

When these types of topics of who/what is better, I feel all we can do is interject our own data set and what is important to the individual. Opinions should be formed based on at least some facts and certainly experiences. Otherwise we just get into a war of words. All that said, my personal data set (I do have roughly 100 submissions to both companies over the course of a few years): CBCS (for me) has had significantly fewer mistakes, mislabels, and their grading has lined up with my own. I've had one issue with grading with CBCS. I've had no errors or mistakes on labels or broken or damaged or scratched slabs. No damaged books. This is approximately 100 books. Call it 1 in a 100. CGC is literally 12 - 15% of my books I've had a mistake, a wtf moment, damage or piss poor grading either in excess of my given grade or well below my given grade. Again, that's covering about 100 books. That's about 12 - 15 books out of 100. Not good. Now as to what's important to me - NOT being on a phone with customer service with a slabbing company. Either of them. I'm on the phone for medical customer service. I'm on the phone for car repair customer service, DMV, clients, hired help that screws up, On and on and on. My life sometimes feels like it's all about customer service. I'm so very happy CGC takes care of mistakes, but I don't want to talk to them. I really dont. Nor do I want to ship product back to them to repair it. It's a major ass-ache and it is my time and my aggravation. As for the slabs themselves - that just vanity to me and not important to me. As for sales, yup - I do generally sell quicker and for more money with CGC. But I'm willing and ready to wait longer for the CBCS sale and/or take slightly less to NOT be on the phone with CGC customer service & shipping 10 - 15% of my product back and forth and waiting and not getting a migraine and not getting aggravated. My time and effort is far more valuable to me than an incrementally higher value of the finished product. |

If you are an established CGC customer, it would take a lot to get you out of that camp. Just like it would for any product or service you are generally happy with, even if it has faults. You are invested in that company, both time and money, and something really troublesome would have to happen to force you to make the effort to switch. It probably won't have much to do with what the labels look like, or the tint of the cases. You would have to get fed up enough to switch. People like familiarity - resistant to change. You're used to the order system, you have figured out the best way to ship in each direction. You know the tier system and what services you get for what dollar amount, not needing to learn a new system with different terminology. You know what you are going to get, sort of, instead of venturing into the unknown. This is all very difficult for CBCS, or any competitor of any established company, to overcome. CGC is the 800 lb. gorilla in the room, and that's just the way it is. They were there first. They got entrenched early, tough to move them off the top of the hill. And that IS possible - new higher prices, higher membership fees, "we don't really care about you" attitude. Any one thing could blow up to be a tipping point. People coming into the hobby of graded comics, those who don't have a vested interest, might find it to be a flip of the coin. So the playing field is more level there. But I do recall a comic company named Marvel going up against the bigger DC and eating their lunch. It will be interesting to see how this battle plays out over the years. |

Well Said @chester15. I think the next 12 months in particular will be the best opportunity for CBCS to gain market share. The new pricing and and long TAT's at CGC may alienate some old customers and leave them open for poaching. But I don't think it happens through modern books and small submissions. The 80/20 rule of business is important. CBCS needs to poach some of those big fish who can be a meaningful part of their business and submit thousands of high dollar books each year. If 80% of your business is not coming from 20% of your customers you are too spread out and it will be hard to make a profit. Just as the Airlines focus all their attention on the frequent business travelers and not the person who flies once or twice a year...the new kid submitting 5 books for the first time is pretty much irrelevant in the scheme of things. They need to get more allies among the dealers who influence the market through their sheer volume and the quality of their books. I also think that If CBCS could convince MCS to accept Raw Grade consignments it would be hugely beneficial to all involved parties. MCS needs to lighten their grading workload and they could pretty much just insist that raw submissions go through the CBCS Raw Grade program first...maybe at a slightly discounted price or subsidized by a lower commission rate. Consigners would like it because their book would likely get a more favorable grade from CBCS than from MCS. |

Slabs, labels TATS are pointless IMHO It’s the long established CGC set registry that keeps CGC miles ahead of any of their competitors and is the major reason CGC books carry a premium. The lack of a competitive set registry puts any rival third party grading company at a Hugh disadvantage. The task of creating and establishing a set registry capable of rivaling the long established CGC registry is Hugh mountain for any start up company to overcome. I’m not sure CBCS has the determination or the resources to climb the mountain and challenge the dominance CCC currently enjoys with their long established set registry. |

Bragging rights is the only reason I can think of. I like to think I'm above that kind of thing, but truth be told, I am guilty of vanity on occasion. The most important factor in deciding the value of a comic is desirability. To be fair that's the most important factor of assigning value to anything. But nobody wants it it's not worth anything. One of the facets of desirability of scarcity or Rarity. A census allows you to understand how rare that item might actually be. Why you would insinuate that it's some sort of a trick is beyond me. |
