@Bronte I’m immensely jealous of your collection in general, but especially Detective #298 and Batman #171. Just some stellar books there!

@lawguy1977 those are some great books! I could've sworn I've seen that Heath Ledger cover somewhere. I happen to follow @sketchcardgirl on instagram, and although I've never commissioned anything from her, her artwork is amazing.

@flanders Thanks! Yes, she’s done some similar Heath Ledger commissions that convinced me that I had to get one. I commissioned one as a birthday present last year. Honestly, I thought she was super reasonable and was thrilled with how it turned out.

Not 50, but some favorites. That FF1 is my all time fave. I know it's purple and that puts some people off but the FF is my favorite comic and this copy belonged to Harlan Ellison, my favorite writer.

It bums me out when people feel like they need to explain themselves for having a restored or qualified book.

If you paid the appropriate price and are happy with it that's really all that matters.

It's not any less a key.

@Drahcir Agreed! Especially when talking about a key that significant. Reality is restored is not hugely popular but your reasoning is spot on.

lol a FF 1 restored in 9.4, think I could fit it in my collection 😜

Of course, a restored or qualified book will never be as popular as a blue label.
But I mean - if you're not paying blue label price for it then I see no reason to justify.

Now if you bought a book and was surprised by the restoration or what-have-you that'd different.

It's just never really sat well with me. You don't go to someone's home and as they show you around say shame about the scuffed floors? It's so asinine to me.

It's really a weird thing, we as collectors, seem to do.

Restored books are so misunderstood.

I have a real appreciation for the techniques and craftsmanship that go into professionally restored books. But it's an area the grading companies have fallen behind in. There's a difference between a leaf casted corner, a bit of mending paper applied to reinforce a spine, and recreating the entire missing 1/3 of a remaindered book, yet they'll all get the blanket "Pieces added" designation. Plus CGC is super inconsistent right now. If a corner has been repaired with leaf casting and then trimmed back to the original dimensions of the book, is that trimming? Sometimes CGC calls it trimmed. Sometimes they don't.

Before CGC, a lot of professionally restored books came with documentation and photos from the person doing the work. But once those books got sent in, those docs were tossed (or lost) in favor of the label, but the label can be vague at best and wildly inaccurate at worst.

I think a lot of this is going to be readdressed in the next year or so. It has to be. CGC is being sued by IGB. Hero Restoration is now "untrimming" books. Both of those companies have techniques that are absolutely mind-blowing and virtually undetectable.

My hope is that books restored by master craftsmen will be better understood and seen in a more positive light. While the big name dealers who criticize restored books will finally be outted for all the color touching they did in the 80s and 90s. They'll never admit it, but people know who they are.
