@Studley_Dudley CBCS unfortunately also has banner ads, but I don't see them unless I turn my adblocker off.

@flanders I know. There is a locked thread about banner ads on the CBCS site that essentially writes the joke.

Isn't a registry just a database of the books you own, much like a spreadsheet one might have? What is the significance or importance of the registry?

@GAC
Friendly competition to brag about what you have. Each book is given points and higher points and complete sets give you edge over competition. It also is a nice way to keep track of all your books. If you can find them. (The search parameters were kinda hard to decipher on a few of the books I had)

Edit

This was mine at one point

Together, these do not make sense! It means that collectors will pay more for a book that they think is overgraded!

This is brilliant! And I think what it ultimately says is that most people aren't!

The "CGC is raising prices" thread is still up and running on the CGC forum. The mods have clipped a few offending posts that they claim veered into politics, but the thread is now 18 pages and still going strong.

Maybe there is a joke I'm missing here?

Have I told you about the time I dropped off 3,000 comics at SDCC? Scifinator private msg quote post Address this user
So i have been refraining from jumping in on the price of CBCS disparity to cgc. The perception is real, but the reality is dissipating more than some realize. Tonight a CBCS 9.6 X-Men 121 just sold through ebay for $1,120 which is a 9.6 record eclipsing the previous cgc record of $899.

Over a year ago, before I started selling through MCS and before our crazy current prices, i sold the highest and third highest WildCATS 1. Both CBCS 9.8’s. Late last year a CBCS Restored grade garnered a massive record. And that was in an auction.

I think this trend continues and accelerates.

@Bronte BTW, I have to admit honestly that when my Magazine Turtles graded 9.6 and was worth 3 times what I expected, I was glad that it was in a CGC case because I knew it would have a larger audience. So understand the desire to use the company that the market wants, even if it makes me feel like a sheeple. But I don’t like feeling like a sheeple so I generally support what I believe is the better company. But also I am fortunate enough currently that my comic book sales have not determined my finances or quality of life.

So essentially you wish ill will on me, but it's OK when it benefits yourself?

It's human nature to look out for one's best interest. At least your honest about it. I may not be the best advocate for CBCS, but at the end of the day, I make my stance known. I am not a mindless drone for the most part..... =)

@Bronte Yeah, I think I worded my position a little harshly earlier today. I guess a better way of saying it is this: those of us who support CBCS know we are making the less popular choice but we believe it’s for the right reasons. We hope and expect to have our decision Vindicated one day.
Then again, this is probably true of all Zealots through time. We just can’t wait to be proven right so we can rub everyone else’s nose in it.

Anyone have one that can answer that?

The remaining $149 was what GOT you the extra tier discount, moving from 10% off (Premium) to 15% off (Elite).

Full price for a Modern, for example, was $19 as an Associate, $18 as a Premium, and $17 as an Elite. By paying the extra $150, you save a buck a book. As soon as you had submitted 150 Moderns during that year, you covered the extra cost. Any more than that submitted, you were ahead. The savings could be much higher if you are using higher priced tiers, recouping your $150 faster and getting into the black sooner. If you didn't plan to use the services enough to cover the membership difference, it wouldn't make sense to move up.

When the new prices are in place, the $150 bump in Elite membership is getting you a 10% savings on grading fees, vs. 0% in Premium. With the higher prices, that's a substantial amount to save. With Moderns alone, you would save $2.20 per book (10% of $22). Submitting 68 Moderns covers the difference between Elite and Premium. The $150 difference will be at least twice as "influential" as it was before (150 required before vs. 68 required now to cover). The higher tiers could likely make it 3 times more powerful, possibly even more, depending on the mix of tiers that you use.

You're welcome. I have to confess that I was forced to. I have that membership and couldn't remember "why" without revisiting the math. It seems that CGC is forcing you into the Elite membership if you submit frequently, still to be avoided if you don't.

I search "CBCS" on Ebay regularly looking for discounts to CGC BIN prices and I never find them. I do fine selling CBCS slabs at BIN prices, but it can take some patience. I would not recommend selling CBCS slabs at auction, I think that's a place where you will see the big price differentials. In fact, I would not recommend selling anything at Ebay auction unless you have a pretty significant following of loyal customers to support your auctions. The few Ebay auctions I did, I was never pleased with the outcome and they were all CGC cases. I think Ebay auctions are for dealers who have more built-in price support than me, either through large followings or arrangements with other dealers. You can look at the sold listings of any hot book and see such significant differences in final values, sometimes on the same day.

Well, that's good to hear. I won't pretend that I search for slabbed comics all of the time. Hel, my encapsulated collection is < 50 books.

Now that we're discussing it, I would like to find (or maybe even submit) some of those Justice League #59 Variants...

This is true and is indicative of human weakness of impulse buying - which of course us sellers bank on.

Same. It's not a hard concept to not rip myself off. I also don't do auctions, so everything is a BIN and some have best offers.

@chester15 thanks for the info.
Yeah I guess I just don't submit enough to justify spending the $299. You get $150 credit, 10% off grading (which I used to get on the premium), and $149 of smoke blown up your ass!
Also, now there is basically no benefit to get the "premium" membership either. It's pretty much the same as the associate one...lol.
