CGC prices increase, discounts for members/dealers reduced14436

I've sold CGC and CBCS slabs (BIN) and one time I had someone ask for a discount because of the CBCS case. My response was "no". I don't subscribe to the CBCS inferiority. If anything, I should charge a premium for its superior everything over the other guys.

@xkonk

In my opinion, you can't be blinded by just one viewpoint. You have to see things from the other side as well as your own viewpoint. Both sides have a following, my use of the word cult may have been a bit extreme. In my world, I NEED to think like the other person to see where they are coming from. I cant just go with my initial feelings. I may not be the most cerebral thinking person in tbe forum, but I do try and take account other folks thoughts / opinions before making my own opinion.

In MY past experience, CBCS is a harder sell. People don't want to spend the money on a CBCS book unless it's at a discount to CGC. Again this is my personal experience. I've actually gotten messages saying if this was a CGC book I would have bought it already....

In regards to CGC, my book is going through tbe walk through tier. Essentially it skips the line of wait. It took 4 days I think to input into the system. 10 days to press and same day to grade. Since I live in tbe same state I get the books literally next day when they ship.

As for how much I ask for the book. I plan to ask for as much the market can bear. I know that I sold a hulk 181 2.5 a long time ago that I regraded as a CBCS and got only a fraction of a comparable CGC book. Hence my current decision.

As I mentioned many times before, I think CBCS is a better product and if not for the financial motivations I would be going CBCS.

@DrWatson You've mentioned this before and it made me realize that there is more to it than I had ever considered. Particularly when it comes to 9.8 moderns and high grade keys. I should verify this, but I think the difference in cgc/cbcs selling price for moderns at 9.6 is far less than at 9.8. Which probably has a lot to do with 9.8's being for that registry and 9.6's not so much.

I added up the cost of the books I have at CGC now on the CBCS form and with everything it would only have been a mere seven dollars more for shipping. They would have arrived sooner, been charged faster and probably almost on their way to pressing by now.

@GAC I recently had someone ask to cancel an order because "His son thought it was a CGC slab." I've never had anyone use CBCS to lower my asking price.

@GAC

Agree completely.

I just sold a Black Panther #2 and I didn’t get as many offers, almost certainly due to CGC bias, I also didn’t lower my asking price.

At the end of the day, I made $600 on a book I bought for cover price and slabbed.

I cannot complain.

I don't know how people struggle to sell CBCS graded books. Do they immediately list the price at a 30% discount? If so, I need a list of these sellers. It's a problem I've never had.

I need that list also. I only buy CBCS slabs. I think I have 3-4 CGC slabs in over 1,000 slabs.

From other groups I'm in, I've heard of bias - but the bias I've heard is at the very high priced books and at the 9.8 grade.
I'm somewhat inclined to believe it's the new blood (read: sports cards collectors) that are..... well... kinda clueless. But from other forum threads it's also likely they are fueling much of the crazy price increases at the highest grade numbers on the keyest of books. They want what they want (CGC) and they only want 9.8. All else seem irrelevant and out of scope to these high rollers that continually set new 9.8 records

8 modern books, no fast track
Received @CGC 2/23.
Shipped 4/14
CFP pressed them and delivered to CGC at an unknown date. So I don’t know how long it took to receive.

CGC has been inconsistent in my opinion.
I had over 100 books graded by them just in the last 10 months, 3 ridiculous label errors, and a few examples of inconsistent newsstand designation. About 10 books from previous batch I’m 99% confident got damaged in CGC’s possession.
I had 9.0, 9.4’s that look like 9.8’s and vice-versa.

I’ve had many fewer books graded by CBCS, roughly 25. but any and all surprises in grading have been something I missed or something that pressed/cleaned better than I expected.

In selling, I am experiencing a shrinking difference in prices realized between the two companies, especially for 4 figure books. I’m guessing the people buying expensive books are a bit more savvy; ahead of the curve. I just quickly sold an ASM129 CBCS 5.5 for top FMV on MCS consignment; very encouraging.

@Joosh thanks man!! I have three moderns in for press at ccs and still haven't been billed. Turnaround times have constantly gone up since I submitted back in February and when I called about it; I got well whenever it drops. Ugh!! I was better off sending them here.

Obviously sales and circumstances can differ. Up to about 7.5, I've sold several copies of PGX graded Inc Hulk 181's over the years for literally within a few bucks of what CGC would have sold for at that time. Low grade copies of Hulk 181 sell like hand sanitizer during a pandemic. For me it hasn't mattered WHO graded them.

And as a general rule, this principle - for my sales - has applied to any "hot" book. People are thrilled just to find one they can afford and being sold at the current market price.

So I am looking for trends. Is this about right?

IN GENERAL, when buying collectors seem to prefer CGC over CBCS and will pay more for books in CGC slabs.

IN GENERAL, when submitting books for grading, collectors prefer CGC because they feel that they will get higher grades because CBCS is too strict.

Together, these do not make sense! It means that collectors will pay more for a book that they think is overgraded!

Great observation Ed!

Is this evidence that most collectors buy the grade and not the book?

I have never used the CGC registry, but I wonder if CBCS could capitalize by creating their own registry that also honours CGC’s books. Similar to how they honour CGC Signature Series books.

Isn't a registry just a database of the books you own, much like a spreadsheet one might have? What is the significance or importance of the registry?

Friendly competition to brag about what you have. Each book is given points and higher points and complete sets give you edge over competition. It also is a nice way to keep track of all your books. If you can find them. (The search parameters were kinda hard to decipher on a few of the books I had)

This was mine at one point
