CGC prices increase, discounts for members/dealers reduced14436

Ima gonna steal this and look for some occasion to use it! IronMan private msg quote post Address this user
This topic is extremely active on the discussion board for CGC. Surprised not here yet...

CGC has increased prices across the board. While the general grading prices have increased in the range of 10-17%, some add on fees have gone way higher. Chart below on grading increases. But the chart doesn't include the prescreen reject fee increasing from $5 to $8. Fast track is increasing from $10 to $15.

At the same time, paid memberships receive no discount until the top membership (Elite) and it's 10%. Used to be 15%. The Premium membership loses it's 10% discount. Dealer accounts see discount reduced to 15% from 20%

Shipping via FedEx and UPS also sees increases. percent increase varies by carrier and number of books.

Opportunity for CBCS?

And to be clear, the Value tier has been eliminated. Used to be $27

Sounds like a perfect time not to renew the paid membership next month. I'll get my two reholders done then make a clean break.

Agreed...they won't miss my business as I don't submit to them too much but after this announcement I'll be exclusive to CBCS.

The card grading companies jacked up their prices. It was only a matter of time until it trickled into comic grading.

I am obviously not in favour of this, but I wouldn’t be surprised if CBCS is next.

Guess someone has to pay for the new facility and staff....would have thought all the books that necessitated the expansion would have paid for it without price increases....someone didn't crunch the numbers right.

Would love to see what the corporate structure is like..would have to know this will drive a certain % to CBCS.....do they have an acceptable %??

Watch in July/Aug of next year..if too many people stop the subscription service they will have a "special" with lower rates for a limited time to lure some back.

This hobby is already getting uber expensive. These grading prices are just going to jack up prices in the secondary market as sellers transfer the costs on to the buyer.

You are aware of this crazy thing called a pandemic right? Companies out there can't even get cardboard boxes to ship things, so surprise surprise the pricing on those went up too.

I doubt CGCs explosive influx of books is the sole reason for increasing their costs. I know that bike companies tacked on 10-15% AFTER dealers had already ordered and paid, because everyone in the supply chain tacked on costs to them. Things like cardboard boxes, even the bags and cases...all those costs are up. Add to that the 70 new hires and the new facility, even the PPE and extra cleaning costs...just makes sense really. I would definitely not be surprised if CBCS is next, as it's only logical.

CGC has been in business for 21 years and has raised prices a number of times. Three or four times I can think of. CBCS has been in business seven years and raised prices once I believe. Price increases are too be expected. Never welcome, but expected. A 10% increase in the grading costs of a modern doesn't seem out of line.

What is historically unprecedented with CGC's increases are the discount reductions. Never before has CGC reduced the grading discounts that paid memberships and dealer accounts received.

The hired 70 new employees thing looks to be misleading. The exact quote is:
"As part of the Certified Collectibles Group® (CCG®), we have initiated a massive hiring push that has resulted in over 70 new employees being added in the last three months,"

So has CGC added 70 new employees? Or is it that CCG - across it's SEVEN DIFFERENT companies - added 70 employees? The answer appears to be CCG has added 70 new employees. Worth keeping in mind is the Sports card grading company is brand new. They had ZERO staff grading sports cards a year ago. Zero staff grading Magic and Pokemon cards a year ago. So how many new staff are actually working at CGC involved in grading comics?

The vast, overwhelming number of comics I submit for grading are my client's books. Not mine. I hope CBCS can hold the line on prices for a few years. I'd love to be able to explain to my clients that CBCS is faster, less expensive, their slab is at least as nice if not nicer and is making far fewer mistakes as far as encapsulation and shipping than CGC.

I hear ya, but removing the Value tier is just dirty. Even though <$200 FMV isn’t really a thing these days 😂

If CGC is not "receiving" orders for a month and the new pricing kicks in a week from now, are the people whose books actually arrived there last week going to be paying the new prices?

Per CGC’s announcement:

Granted...increases do happen, especially when there are limited alternatives.
Would just love some of these companies to be publicly traded so I could buy minimal stock to see their financials.

I would assume that the expansion of facility and staff all made sense at the existing price and discount structure (i.e. cost of borrowing is X%, expansion will result in X% increase in business so X years to payback the amount needed for the expansion) like wise...need X# of books to pay for 1 new head count soooo expansion allows for X new headcount.

Sure..costs also increase, corrugate, resin (to make slabs) etc...but a good business would have a procurement person (or team) to source new suppliers and play them off each other to keep prices low
You might get screwed on the slab part...molds aren't cheap but get a few suppliers on board and you are set

Kind of funny....resin prices had an increase because Texas decided to have a private company run utilities and then shockingly didn't do the required upgrades (that they knew about for decades!) and caused power outages when a cold snap hit....resulting in a reduction in output and an increase in prices!!! -thanks fellas!!!

Before I started getting my comic books graded by CBCS, I checked out both companies (CGC and CBCS). After googling both it was CGC = NO and CBCS = YES. Then I talked to both tables at a comic con and I was didn't like what CGC had to say and CBCS table made me feel like I was apart of their family. Since 2014, I've never submitted anything nor will I to CGC and CBCS I've submitted over a 1,000 comic books with many more to submit. Thank you CBCS.

I don't see anything about dropping the modern grade pre-screen, only an increase from $5 to $8.

Also, international shipping rates have become outrageous (I'm assuming they were much lower before) and you'll have to pay this much for a package that isn't even insured:

How much is international return shipping at CBCS?

It's becoming more and more apparent that CGC is for the Industry insiders and CBCS is for the rest of us.

@SpiderTim
As Flanders notes, prescreen for grading of moderns is still available - at a substantial price increase for rejects.

The confusion over if prescreen for grading was still available came from the fact that along with the price increases and changes announced for CGC grading there were also changes and price increases for CCS Pressing. Prescreen for PRESSING is being eliminated for modern tier. If you want prescreen for pressing you have to pick a higher priced tier.

That works great on a good day, but in a pandemic where even all the factories are waiting on raw goods to make the resins, cardboard, etc.. it's very much a "take it or don't" approach right now. Negotiations and price-matching isn't happening as much as we'd like, because demand on suppliers is so high across the board.
