@GAC My theory is that the "bubble" is segmented and does not cover the entire industry. We have to assume that the bulk of these submissions are books that have only recently become valuable enough to slab. I really don't think it will be my Golden Age All Star Comics #23 that will explode on the census, it will be X-men 282 and ASM 360-363, and Star Wars 2-10 and all kinds of other moderns. A personal example, I have some lower grade Capt 117's that I never imagined having slabbed, now selling for $200-$300. Also mid-grade X-men 120's and 121's. This should definitely lead to a glut in those books and a bursting bubble. But I have no idea how long it will go, I tend to shy away from skyrocketing markets a lot sooner than the average person, and that hasn't always been to my benefit.

Hopefully cbcs takes advantage of this. They need to have more reasons to pick them over cgc. Lower prices is another positive.

For sure on the moderns and books that have only recently increased in value worthy of slabbing....but do you think this hot market has also enticed old/long time collectors to get their books slabbed who at any previous time wouldn't have? I ask because, obviously people are selling...books are going for records amounts...but there still seems to be a "scarcity" but not in the true sense of that word...a demand that outweighs supply hence increased/record sales amounts being achieved. With all these people selling, I suspect there are alot of collectors not actually selling but preparing to sell. I feel there's a tipping point in the future...don't know when, but if we reach that tipping point then we'll have a ton of silver age, bronze age etc key books available and fewer collectors out there buying.....collectors selling their collections and getting out of the hobby I mean. It seems these record comic sales are generating record submissions that are in part for sales happening right now but also for preparation for a mass exodus out of the hobby via selling one's entire collection. I bet if you took a census of collectors and the books they own/collect, it would reveal that someday a high percentage of these collectors will sell their collections and they'll do it within a very short time frame. If that does happen, that'll destroy a huge portion of the value of these books.....maybe I'm thinking way to much about this. lol!

I think this is very spot on as a likely possibility.
I might be one of those collectors you mention.
Never ever ever ever did I dream of getting books slabbed. I've made it quite clear in multiple posts that I actually don't personally like slabbed books. But I'm also one who has seen the drastic differential in value between (example) a raw NM and a graded 9.4 NM. And I just can't ignore that differential as much as I want to.

I still hold on to many of my slabbed "big boys"; but I do intend to unload them one day in one big firesale when I'm done with the financial aspect of this industry.
Many of my closest friends plan the same thing. They don't like slabs, but slab away they do because of the current financials. They will be getting out also.

Bottom line is..... all my friends and myself will be getting out of this and selling in the not so distant future. So I think you're on to something when you say alot of collectors are preparing to sell. In my circle of close friends, that is absolutely true.

Myself included...like you state, the reality of the differential between raw and slabbed. I will be getting out of the hobby once and for all at some point selling my entire collection. I'm 50 years old...not sure when I'll sell but I bet when I do there'll be alot of us out there selling at the same time....and fewer collectors buying when we do.

I won mine in roughly 1990 in a store raffle for probably a dollar or two. I picked a comic off their wall with what was remaining so I took X-Men 101 (which he had up for $25).

I was lucky enough to have Claremont AND more importantly Dave Cockrum before he passed away sign on the 1st page indicia (old school way).

I have yet to send into CBCS but its in the plan.

I think it will be an interesting experiment to pick 10 old school books and 10 of the "new hotness" and track them on CGC census for the next 8 weeks. I think that could give us a good idea of just where this is heading. Whenever I try to wrap my head around it I end up splitting the middle. There is half of my collection (in terms of dollar value) that I am very skeptical about continuing to own into 2022. And there is half that I am very comfortable continuing to own. Of course the half that I am comfortable continuing to own are the long-time collector old-school books from the Golden Age and Silver Age. But if I'm honest I have to admit that some of that comfort comes from not wanting to part with them...I won't feel like I missed an opportunity to sell those even if the market goes into the tank for a few years.

I'm not sure that a period of time where you have customers waiting a month just to be entered into the system is a good time to roll out price increases.

They just hired 70 people. They also moved to a bigger facility. There's also the increased costs of cardboard and plastics, shipping, PPE...seems reasonable to me.

Guaranteed CBCS will do the same as they grow, as any logical company would.

Yet - it still takes them 1 month+ just to open a box for registration

When price increases occur, whether its CGC or CBCS, I think it's kind of a natural reflex to have a negative reaction to it. But then we have to step back and ask ourselves...which of us would be happy to go 7 to 10 years without a pay increase?

Yep. Anyway, it's been, what ... more than three years since the last time CGC raised their prices? That's not a bad record.

At least they announced it in advance. And ~25%-30% isn't that bad. Ten percent would have been smarter, but it could be worse. Have you guys heard of PSA? They are the largest and most well-established of the sports cards and trading cards grading companies. On March 1st they DOUBLED their prices. And they did it overnight, with no announcement ... it was a surprise on the general public.

I know this because I had pulled out some old sports cards I have from the 80's. I found a few that are worth selling, decided to send them in. I had about 50 or so for a "bulk" order. I had already filled out the online order form, but hadn't "submitted" yet, because I was waiting on some card sleeves and protectors I'd ordered to arrive. (Ironically, from PSA.)

Overnight, the cost of my submission doubled. I called customer service and explained where I was in the process, why the delay. Nope ... no exceptions. So I switched to a bulk order to CGC's new sports card grading service instead.

The only thing about CGC's announcement that annoys me is the fact that I actually called them, about 6-7 weeks ago, after the PSA fiasco. I asked if they would ever do that, increase prices without warning. The lady I spoke to said absolutely not, we have zero plans to increase prices right now. And anyway, we only raise prices at the end of the year, if we do it at all. There is no price increase coming.

Turns out, that was a lie. But at least they gave us a week's warning. That's more than PSA did. (PSA said they did it to stem the tide of submissions. But it leaked to some people online, that the increase was coming. So submissions actually increased dramatically the last week of February! Idiots.)

Now PSA are actually closed to submissions. Suspended completely! For every tier less than a $5000 value and a $300 fee. Can you imagine? It's been that way for a month.

I can only assume it is because a large chunk of the "70 new employees" that CGC hired in the last 3-4 months are for the new sports and trading card divisions. And perhaps a large number of them jumped ship from PSA? If I were to start a new division, that's how I'd do it ... quick, and by inflicting as much damage as possible on the competition.

I do like that CGC increased the modern tier max value to a $400. value. That will be good for a lot of books that were on that bubble of being valued over $200 which was the old max value for Modern tier.
