The whole thread flew off the edge of a cliff, imo, with the "I'm going to contact CBCS right now and ask them if they are equally as unscrupulous as CGC". I read it and had... well... at least a half dozen emotions |

They raised all their fees and also removed the grading tier discount from their $149 membership. Just got an email about it today: https://www.cgccomics.com/news/article/9057/cgc-fee-updates/ I'm not sure that a period of time where you have customers waiting a month just to be entered into the system is a good time to roll out price increases. |

@KCBatmanFan seems like great news for CBCS. Better get those submissions in before the CBCS turnaround time doubles. I do wish CBCS had better membership options. The coupons are generally worthless to me since I only submit a minimum of 10 books at a time and want them all sent back together.

I don't disagree, MediaSlave. I totally understand that as the cost of doing business increases, the cost of your service must increase. My main issue is that it might be better to let your customers actually see some of the benefits of the improvements before making them pay for them.

Quote:Originally Posted by KCBatmanFan Times like this are PRECISELY when you want to roll out a price increase. You don't do it when business is slow. They...along with other grading companies (like those for video games, cards, etc)...have more business then they can handle right now. WATA (game grading) has temporarily suspended their cheapest grading tier....increased pricing on all of their other tiers....and extended their turn-around times. This would all serve to help get their backlog under control by slowing down submissions....as well as increasing the revenue on incoming submissions to allow for hiring of additional help and improving their equipment, facilities and processes. |

Imagine a restaurant that you have to wait 3 months for a reservation. They are "price inelastic" and are going to charge whatever they want. The restaurant that has empty seats all evening...they're the ones that have to worry about price elasticity. Pricing is not a moral issue and it's really not even about the level of service that you provide. It's about what the market will bear.

@EbayMafia Exactly! So what does this mean for the comic collecting market? Does this support the bubble theory or is this evidence of a resilient and robust market? Fragile or strong market? i.e. CGC increasing prices and deleting a tier. |

@GAC My theory is that the "bubble" is segmented and does not cover the entire industry. We have to assume that the bulk of these submissions are books that have only recently become valuable enough to slab. I really don't think it will be my Golden Age All Star Comics #23 that will explode on the census, it will be X-men 282 and ASM 360-363, and Star Wars 2-10 and all kinds of other moderns. A personal example, I have some lower grade Capt 117's that I never imagined having slabbed, now selling for $200-$300. Also mid-grade X-men 120's and 121's. This should definitely lead to a glut in those books and a bursting bubble. But I have no idea how long it will go, I tend to shy away from skyrocketing markets a lot sooner than the average person, and that hasn't always been to my benefit.

Hopefully cbcs takes advantage of this. They need to have more reasons to pick them over cgc. Lower prices is another positive.

Quote:Originally Posted by EbayMafia For sure on the moderns and books that have only recently increased in value worthy of slabbing....but do you think this hot market has also enticed old/long time collectors to get their books slabbed who at any previous time wouldn't have? I ask because, obviously people are selling...books are going for records amounts...but there still seems to be a "scarcity" but not in the true sense of that word...a demand that outweighs supply hence increased/record sales amounts being achieved. With all these people selling, I suspect there are alot of collectors not actually selling but preparing to sell. I feel there's a tipping point in the future...don't know when, but if we reach that tipping point then we'll have a ton of silver age, bronze age etc key books available and fewer collectors out there buying.....collectors selling their collections and getting out of the hobby I mean. It seems these record comic sales are generating record submissions that are in part for sales happening right now but also for preparation for a mass exodus out of the hobby via selling one's entire collection. I bet if you took a census of collectors and the books they own/collect, it would reveal that someday a high percentage of these collectors will sell their collections and they'll do it within a very short time frame. If that does happen, that'll destroy a huge portion of the value of these books.....maybe I'm thinking way to much about this. lol! |
