Is discussing CGC allowed?14404

I don't believe this....and I know you don't care that I don't believe this. GAC private msg quote post Address this user
no flag is being planted here. the topic of this discussion has been discussed many many times. A simple search here should reveal that. newer books are graded way more strictly than the old books.

Just so you guys know, this particular user is playing victim. He got into a flame war with multiple people because he would not accept what the general informed public was conveying. That is why he was suspended. He was not suspended for his comments about CGC.

He doesn't know who Steve Borock is, and does not accept his comments on grading Golden Age books. It'll be interesting to see any other reactions to his commentary.

This is a train wreck example of grading. Wow. Did 2/3 graders look at this and come to a 9.6 conclusion?

@adamlui I wish you well with your endeavor. Like @GAC stated, This topic has been discussed many times before. I know you were hoping more members would chime in. So my opinion is use the service that you feel comfortable with and don't use the service that you have issues with. So far, I use both CGC and CBCS because I have had positive experiences with both companies. I only post on CBCS forum because it is a more positive experience and most of these forum members are good people with interesting topics to share and discuss.

That's the impression I've been getting up to this point in the thread.

The co-owner of Heritage created a coin grading agency that was actually shut down by the FTC for giving inflated grades (to coins HE was selling). He's also co-owner of CGC.

I love what CGC has brought to the collecting world. But I'll never quite trust them because of the above.

I've been vocal about CCG before but that's just MY opinion. I don't feel my insight should be gospel however I have hear from other sources about their questionable business practices.

I think everyone should be wary of making assertions based on anecdotal evidence. I heard from, like, five friends that they know a guy whose stomach exploded after eating pop rocks and cola. True story. Swear to God.

Honestly we shouldn't have to worry much about them. We are here to use CBCS and their services no? I think its okay to poke fun every once in awhile about the competition but lets get back to what makes this place awesome! If we didn't believe in Steve and company , we would be eslewhere.

I've heard a story from a friend who knows a cousin that knows a guy that claims CGC added 1/16" to their inner wells to avoid Newton Rings and now books are slipping out and getting permanently damaged.

Can you believe how silly that sounds?

I kind of figured that out last night. He got suspended because he's relentless and will tolerate no opposition.

Both of their opinions vary depending on who's paying them the most money.

Is it possible this book was damaged inside the case after being graded? I see CGC & CBCS comics quite often on eBay and MCS listed in 9.6 and 9.8 and when I zoom in I am shocked at noticeable spine ticks and corner bends!! You have to look closely before you buy anything online, never just assume because of the grade assigned that you are getting that 9.6 or 9.8 accurate grade. I wonder how sturdy the cases really are? I mean if you drop the slabbed case the corners can still bend & if you walk on it surely the spine can still be damaged?? It's much better than raw grades but the case it not indestructible.

That was my initial thought, but the placement of the ticks throughout the entire spine of the book made me think twice. TT12 definitely picks up ticks really easily, which is why it's so tough in a 9.8, but I doubt the book could be dealt that much damage in the case. I don't slab modern books at a high volume though, so others might have better insight on this.
