I'm not sure that a period of time where you have customers waiting a month just to be entered into the system is a good time to roll out price increases.

They just hired 70 people. They also moved to a bigger facility. There's also the increased costs of cardboard and plastics, shipping, PPE...seems reasonable to me.

Guaranteed CBCS will do the same as they grow, as any logical company would.

Yep. Anyway, it's been, what ... more than three years since the last time CGC raised their prices? That's not a bad record.

At least they announced it in advance. And ~25%-30% isn't that bad. Ten percent would have been smarter, but it could be worse. Have you guys heard of PSA? They are the largest and most well-established of the sports cards and trading cards grading companies. On March 1st they DOUBLED their prices. And they did it overnight, with no announcement ... it was a surprise on the general public.

I know this because I had pulled out some old sports cards I have from the 80's. I found a few that are worth selling, decided to send them in. I had about 50 or so for a "bulk" order. I had already filled out the online order form, but hadn't "submitted" yet, because I was waiting on some card sleeves and protectors I'd ordered to arrive. (Ironically, from PSA.)

Overnight, the cost of my submission doubled. I called customer service and explained where I was in the process, why the delay. Nope ... no exceptions. So I switched to a bulk order to CGC's new sports card grading service instead.

The only thing about CGC's announcement that annoys me is the fact that I actually called them, about 6-7 weeks ago, after the PSA fiasco. I asked if they would ever do that, increase prices without warning. The lady I spoke to said absolutely not, we have zero plans to increase prices right now. And anyway, we only raise prices at the end of the year, if we do it at all. There is no price increase coming.

Turns out, that was a lie. But at least they gave us a week's warning. That's more than PSA did. (PSA said they did it to stem the tide of submissions. But it leaked to some people online, that the increase was coming. So submissions actually increased dramatically the last week of February! Idiots.)

Now PSA are actually closed to submissions. Suspended completely! For every tier less than a $5000 value and a $300 fee. Can you imagine? It's been that way for a month.

I can only assume it is because a large chunk of the "70 new employees" that CGC hired in the last 3-4 months are for the new sports and trading card divisions. And perhaps a large number of them jumped ship from PSA? If I were to start a new division, that's how I'd do it ... quick, and by inflicting as much damage as possible on the competition.

I do like that CGC increased the modern tier max value to a $400. value. That will be good for a lot of books that were on that bubble of being valued over $200 which was the old max value for Modern tier.

Cgc will eventually straighten out their problems and get back to basics but I know I'm not the only one that has bad taste left in their mouth from them. I like what cbcs has to offer more than what they have to offer .

And I'd agree, except for the pandemic. Every industry I know has been hit by cost increases that were blindsides. No reason CGC should be any different. Boxes, plastic, PPE...all massive price hikes but still necessary. I doubt they had a choice. As I said in another thread, bike stores up here (Canada) were hit with 10-15% extra from distributors AFTER ordering and paying for their orders, because every supplier out there tacked that on to their costs.

Its a strange time man.

Somebody on a FB thread said CGC is getting 5k to 15k books PER DAY. Now, I have ZERO insight as to whether or not thats true, but considering I heard 2800 books arrived just for the Frank Miller signing, I can easily imagine truckloads of moderns showing up every day.

So yeah, it takes time to sort through all that. Keep in mind this isn't mail you're sorting here, you need a gentle touch.

Its bonkers.

to me that does not matter at all. it is CGC’s decision to keep arranging signature events. if i eg pay for fast pass - it still take 1 month+ to open the package - so not much fast over that

And even with that volume, they're getting books from Heritage and since the owner of Heritage also owns CGC I can't imagine those books getting the same treatment as the rest of us. I think it's safe to assume books coming from Heritage jump to the front of the grading line causing further delay for the rest of their customers.

I would be really curious to know if they have graders for different tiers/high volume customers. Much like how when you invest a certain amount at PNC, you are assigned a personal banker whom you work with instead of calling/talking to a regular customer service rep. I'd think someone like Heritage could keep a grader fairly busy by themselves.

It's all a racket, especially with the cgc. Anyone who believes differently is wearing rose colored glasses.

it's not the price increase that i really care about .... i'm more annoyed about the way they screwed with the membership tiers, and took the discounts out / reduced

Here's something that is interesting, for folks who submit a high volume to CGC (more than 150 books a year):

"CGC memberships purchased prior to April 28, 2021, will continue to have the current membership benefits until their renewal/expiration date."

Now, my membership expires in July. So I get the 15% discount until then, then it switches to the new 10% discount. BUT ... if I cancel my membership this week, or buy a new one, then I get the additional 5% off for a whole year, instead of just a couple of months.

I am looking into it now. I might have to do that.

there is a discount for autorenenewal - may offset the increased cost

Increased cost? I'm not following.

Maybe I wasn't clear. If you buy a brand new membership this week, you are grandfathered in for a year of the 15% discount. If you already have a membership, as I do, you will have to either cancel the old one to buy a new one this week, or buy a second one, and start using that when the old one expires.

FYI, the discount for renew is only $20. However, the Premium and Elite membership tiers have not increased in price under this new pricing schedule.

If you contact the auction houses they have contacts that they can get on the phone at CGC to work through things. I don't believe that is a grader though.

@Towmater no they are more then likely sales reps as a lot of companies have them and I'd assume cgc has them. Or maybe not, only they know.

@southerncross The head of the signature authentication area at CGC was on the phone pretty quick when a potential issue popped up about something. I could go further about what I know but I'll just leave it at that I know that communication goes on and the responses are fairly quick.
