@EbayMafia I've always been a budget collector. I've only bought 2 books at $700 range. Avengers 1 came back 6.5 and my romance book that I just got when you add washington taxes and shipping.

Everything else $500 and less.
Good range for me are books under $100.

Rubbish in today's market but in the past when I picked my books subby 1 $434 9.4
It was a nice time.

Others here will have better books then me though I think I did ok.

And I hunt bargains.
I only have 2 restored books in my collection.
A flash 105 incomplete restored for $50
Sub-mariner 36 from the 1950s incomplete restored $50

So I'm the bargain collector hunting for cool books underpriced in my opinion 👍

The grade never meant too much to me as long as the book was presentable. The more "important" (i.e. usually more expensive) the book the more latitude I give on the presentation. Upgrading is always an option (although at this very moment in the hobby, it's a little tougher). I always felt it's better to have the book than not have it. If the price is fair for the condition the book is in, then I'd usually go for it, and upgrade later if needed or wanted. I have a bunch of mid/lower grade books that present pretty well.

I used to be completely turned off on Incomplete and Restored. It's still not my preference and I don't actively seek them out but I have softened on them a bit...again, depending on the book. Incomplete should not impact story/art but if an AF15 came along at a price you can't refuse, you buy it.

Since the market ha spiraled out of control on a lot of issues, I'm just going to collect run fillers and moderns till this madness sorts it's self out. I shouldn't have to donate blood and semen to pay for first appearances of second tier characters. In fact, I don't think I'd go that far for an AF15.....

wait a minute, yes I would. Totally would.

I have a package arriving on Monday from the UK. I was surprised the seller settled on the price. I agreed to pay all the PayPal and customs fees (thanks UPS). Long story short, he had some books I was looking for, I made an offer, he accepted, then he disappeared for a few weeks. Comes back last week and says he still wants to make the sale. We both know the SA books he has have jumped in the last few months but he stuck with our initial agreement and I have to give him credit for that. Anyways, UPS called and said I owe money for them because they or someone in customs determined the value to be higher than the $2500 the books were insured for. So, while the market is f***y at the moment, there are still good people to work out buying, selling, and trading with. Unfortunately some dealer from CA made his way through the area so I'm not sure my endeavors will be fruitful this weekend. Better this guy than Dale.

@Comicninja0215 why I've been hunting DCs

Apart from say Hawkman 4 and HOS and Neil Adams Batman's, few DCs are cheap.

One character I like is Rose and Thorn.

Lois lane 105 1st appearance.
I've picked up copies in the 6.0-7.0 for $15-$20.

Find me a 1970 Marvel first appearance for that money.

Granted no tv no movie so the book is probably not investment material.
I like the character and the story line so why not! 👍

Graham Crackers ripped themselves off. A 9.4 just sold on the Link for $502. Cool cover and on my list for my WH run. Unfortunately my area is tapped out on this title.

Same here, friend!

If Marvel is going to be crazy high, I’ll grab some DC books on my list.

For someone like me who lives on a strict comic budget, you have to be creative to get some of your wants.

What I've been doing the last 12 months.

Had to stop getting Kirby 4th worlds about 2 years ago.
Now the movie has been shelved I can slowly go back to getting them when I see them.

I am a DC collector so for me this market has been just fine, if not excellent. Some of the books I've obtained recently have seen big jumps (i.e. Showcase 17), but for the large part I'm grabbing books that don't feel overpriced with nice potential.

For instance Hawkman is one of my favorite characters, and his first silver age appearance (and Hawkgirl's) in Brave and the Bold #34 seems undervalued to me. Same with Justice League of America #21, and a lot of the Batman villain keys. A lot of these DC keys are at a great price point right now, and may not have the hype behind them but have high upside IMO.

At the very least I'm getting some awesome books. The market's hype train has definitely dragged along some stinkers, so collect what you love!

Booster Gold seems to be heating up.

Sold a # 1 9.4 with white pages for $110.

I noticed I also had another copy in the same grade with OW/White pages so I put it up for $120 and it sold within a couple hours.

Listed these today as well:

This speculative market is going to ruin collecting for the average person with a limited budget. I like to collect runs, but now every other 10 issues in a run is a key! And why collect a run if you can't afford the expensive keys that fall inbetween issues? I am glad the few longer runs I have are done and collected because if I had to start collecting them today I wouldn't...would buy strictly Trades/collected editions.

I noticed Alpha Flight #1 (1983) is increasing in value & 9.8's are selling for several hundred dollars...why? Not because there is a planned TV Series or Movie in the works, but because it's possible that these characters may appear eventually in the MCU, nothing definite has been announced. So I suppose with this logical way of thinking we should just jack up the price of EVERY single Marvel character's first appearance just in case sometime down the road a live action appearance may or may not take place!

The Key Collector app is fueling a lot of this rampant speculation.

Every time there's a film/TV rumor related to a comic they hype it and then Youtubers and podcasters boost the signal. Books and comics get optioned for film all the time. But maybe 1 in 100 ever make it to production. I'm not sure the creators of Key Collector know that, or if they do, they don't care.

The speculation game has become so competitive that folks are speculating when a particular comic is just thought about in the back of someone's Medulla Oblongota as a "maybe" somewhere down the line. They're following the trends of the MCU with C, D & E characters; taking chances with low cost 1st appearances (or 1st in own title and/or 2nd app). And they load up on high grade copies. Newsstands from sellers that don't understand they have a newsstand are searched within listings and targeted. CPV's are gold.

20 copies of Alpha Flight x $25 raw in the present is a whole lot less than if Alpha Flight comes to fruition. By announcement time, it's way way way too late these days.

I think in the end, even if one is completely wrong, you can still unload the issues for roughly the same amount one bought them for. So the risk is near zero on Silver/Bronze and much of Copper age.

This one is funny. I would hang out at the comic shops and BS with the guys working. Phone would ring and it was always the same thing every time. They have the app too so they know why people are calling. If everyone's grails were issues of Avengers West Coast, then why didn't people buy these when they were wasting away in $0.25 bins for the last 25 years?

Through ebay or direct?

If direct - why would there be any customs fee given comic books are zero-rated?

@poka It was direct from a CGC forum member. UPS contacted me about the fees. The invoice header was for import charges which were for "Government Charges" and "Brokerage Charges". It was around $40 but it was the first time I ever had that on anything I've bought from abroad.

I think this is what happened in the 90s with baseball cards when Beckett was pumping these cards in their monthly price guides.
