KEYS are easy, RUNS are a BI**H!!14317

Pictures? We don't need no stinking pictures. brysb private msg quote post Address this user
Yes, KEYS are available virtually everywhere. Try completing a run, that is where it gets to be difficult if seeking NM copies.

They’re a money sink. My ASM run is missing 138-148 (among other gaps). Don’t think there are any particularly important keys in there, but picking them all up in NM - especially bought individually - is going to be a chunk of money I don’t really want to spend.

Depends on the title...I've got full runs of Silver Surfer (1968), New Gods (1971), Mister Miracle (1971) and Forever People (1971) 😉.

EDIT: The joke being that Mister Miracle is the longest run I own at 18 books. 🍻

For me, my ultimate run was FF #164-295...NM goal successful, but it took a good 2-3 years of recollecting to achieve it.

Anyone can get keys and with the recent craziness in prices, it looks like everything is a key. Putting together full runs in NM of certain titles was a pain. The last ten issues of GI Joe and Transformers were tough to find in NM. The last few issues of Dazzler, Alpha Flight, Punisher v2, Punisher War Journal v1, and Punisher War Zone v1 were a bitch too. Still trying to finish off Nam, and What If v1 and v2 but the local shops are tapped out so it may be a Mile High kinda completion which I don't want to do. Anyways, I love putting together runs. To me, it's more impressive. To each their own, and collect what you like.

If I had started trying to complete my X-Men run now instead of 5+ years ago, I would have never been able to complete it with these prices. Even my doubles that I sold off to pay for upgrades just a year or two ago have doubled in price.

Now I am working on an ASM run. I am not even looking at the first 12 to 15 issues, because of their cost. It’s probably a pipe dream to even try to complete #16 to 75 or 100.

I still haven't pulled the trigger on an Adventure Comics #247. That could/might be my next big purchase - time will tell (an ASM #28 or other Spidey could prevail). I only need a few other issues to complete my Legion run in Adventure.

I basically need #'s 1-12 to complete my Defenders volume 1 set. I wonder if it is really worth spending the money to do it.

If you put a high standard on anything, it'll be hard to do. But no, I think if I had to get Uncanny 1-10 or Uncanny 534-544 it would be much easier to get 534-544.

Only run I have is a 9.8 Secret Wars.

Currently working on a Black Panther 9.6 run.

The hunts are fun.

I've been working on my ASM run for years. I'm down to about 29 books. A few in 100-150 but mostly in the 1-100 with the majors needed being 1,2,3,7,8,11,12,17. Obviously not all NM but a pain nonetheless.

It doesn't have to be. Most of my first 100 UXM are VF and below. Above that, they're all NM. I tend to go with what I can afford. Many of my complete runs are NM so if i can find NM copies for the run, then I get them.

The older collectors I know mostly collected runs. When I started collecting only 12 years ago they all wanted to know what I would collect. I am of their generation. They suggested Spider-Man, X-Men as the choices they were most glad to have done. Some did Baker covers, for instance, and had every one, but they all also constantly upgraded when they could.
Looking at the hobby, keys, #1’s were the obvious choice for investment, which was my goal.
You could feel the disappointment, universally from the guys who started seriously collecting in the 60’s and 70’s, or who owned comic shops back then. But for pure investment, I was right. Of course I also expanded to covers I considered cool, and some small doable runs like Eternals or Savage Sword. Runs are overwhelming now.

I collected runs and keys. The thrill of the hunt was my favorite part of the hobby except for all of the friends I have made and still make.

Owning keys has a certain coolness to it, but I really enjoyed working on runs. I have owned Marvel 1 to the end, Action 1-100, full runs of all Marvels in high grade, and much more, but the main thing is the hunt and the friends.

I've started breaking up my runs and selling (mainly full runs of silver age Marvels). I thought it would bring me down but after basking in the glow of a completed run for a few years it started to lose its magic (as others have said, the hunt is the fun part).

Similar boat and hence recent frustration in another thread. So close to a full run but quickly becoming a pipe dream after years.

I’ve toyed with putting together a Daredevil Miller run. With the exception of 158 & 168, most in 9.8 can be had for under, or just over $100. Still, that many slabs would require space. Space I’d rather give to keys.

I do love my ‘Human Fly’ run, though. 😆

The only collection runs i've tried for are Silver surfer, Sub-Mariner and Captain Marvel (Marvel's original series) I have most but they are in low to mid grade. I'ts been a while since I've looked at them, I don't think I've completed them but I am close. I'd go to cons and buy copies I already had. I separated them and kept the better ones and am going to sell the dupes, some are reader copies but some are decent. The real problem I have is finding time to take pics, look through them, grade them and post them (Yikes!).

@sportshort You could probably sell them through MCS in Lots. The selling price won't be great but they will do all that work for you and ship them as well. I think any collector who is going to sell should take the time to open up MCS consignment as an option. I mentioned the story of taking about 20 raws to my local LCS and he offered me $350 credit. Even with the tight grading at MCS and the selling commission I netted almost $1,000 for the group by time they all sold. I never would have had the work ethic or grading confidence to sell them individually on Ebay.

I think High Grade Comics (Bob Storms) has MM 17 & 18, slabbed and raw.
