Hi all is this what is called Marvel Chipping and if so is the cause literally when it was cut, or perhaps something else?

No. This is just wear on the outer edge of a book. It looks like the cover is a tiny bit bigger than the book (overhang) and picked up extra wear over the years where it was sticking out and unsupported by the interior of the book.

this is Marvel Chipping. It can be this bad or it can be just one or two small chips out along the right edge.

It's pretty much exclusive to silver age Marvel books because of the paper stock they used at the time.

Marvel Chipping

This is a defect of American comics and applies to early Silver Age Marvel comics (mostly late 50s/early 60s). In the process of guillotining the right hand edge, particularly the top copies in a pile, little chips would be pulled out of that edge. Sometimes it can be a slight cracking at the edge that has weakened the paper so a chip is in danger of falling out. In other cases the chipping can be quite severe and this seriously devalues the comic.
