Help with figuring insure value for submit14147

Collector timberghost private msg quote post Address this user
Hi y'all. This is my first attempt at submitting a 1972 comic for most likely press and grade. It is swamp thing # 1. Now I am not expecting a 9.8, but what should I put as insure value???I don't fully understand, cause some people say don't go over board but others say go above and beyond. Thanks for your help and understanding.

The insurance serves 2 purposes.

1. If something happens you are insured for that amount.
2. If the book hits a certain amount it is graded faster, but will also cost more for grading and pressing.

My suggestion is use gocollect.com as a general guideline of what the value of the book will be.

Ultimately insure what you would be comfortable with if there was a complete and utter loss.

Personally I choose the max amount before the tier changes regardless if it is a 10 dollar book or actual 250$ book.

@timberghost Welcome to the forums.

It's hard to say without having some idea as to the grade of the book. You might want to post some pictures so that folks can better know what you're dealing with.

If I'm not mistaken, the insured value is the max value for which CBCS is responsible if the book gets damaged while in their custody. I would suggest being realistic about the value both on the submission form and during shipping. Most likely, everything will go fine but it's best to be covered just in case.

Timberghost,
Welcome to the forum.
This is what I do and I've sent over 1,000 comic books to CBCS to be graded. Since I'm not a "grader" (but I'm pretty good at it), I insure every comic book I send in at a 9.0. That way if it's an 8.5 or a 9.0+ my average grade would be 9.0. So far none of my comic books have been lost. Now if I know a grade is going to be lower than 8.5 then I give it a good guess. My HULK #4 which I gave it a 6.0 came back 6.0 which I was very happy with. I hope this helps.

This is good advice.

Since Swamp Thing is a vintage/pre-modern book, you can't use either of the modern tiers. So if you think it's any condition up to around VF, you can submit it as expanded and put $250 on it (going by what gocollect has it at right now). If you think it's up to 9.2, you can submit it as expanded and put $400. I think over-insuring might increase your shipping cost a little, although I'm not 100%, but you probably won't notice it compared to the overall order cost anyway.

I usually go with what it would cost to replace the raw book, or if a recent purchase, what I paid for it.

These are you answers. Personally insure as FMV of assumed grade or original purchase price.

Your return shipping cost is based partially on your chosen insurance limit. So, if you insure a $10 book at the highest dollar limit of the tier, your return shipping costs more than if you just insured the book for $10.
