Ah, I see. I got that once before too. The person who messaged me was at least savvy enough to not try to take the deal off eBay. I declined anyway, since I would have put offers on if I wanted to get offers.

So, here's one I'm on the fence about. Edge of Spider-Verse #2 CGC 9.8. I have it listed on eBay and Facebook Marketplace for $1799. Someone just offered me $1700. Unfortunately this was on eBay, so the 10% fee will take that down to $1530.

Still, not bad at all. The average price at Christmas was just $900.

Here are the details ... I bought this copy last June for just $330. I've bought three since, for $482, $390, and $738, and they each have a pretty good shot at 9.8. $1800 is the highest price on GPA, for this year or last. The last four sales (all this week) on eBay were: $1650, $1725, $1798, and $1900.

Also, the deal I mentioned last time fell through. So I don't particularly need the money right away. But I certainly can put it to use, by sending in two more boxes of 25 for Fast Pass grading.

So, what do you guys think? Is it close enough to the high to take it? Or maybe I should cut the price on Facebook by $100 first, see if there are any takers? (Facebook marketplace does not seem to be a robust market, in my - limited - experience.)

FYI, they offered $1500 via message. I replied that I could knock off $50 for him, and he replied how about $1700? That's where we are now. So I can either stick to $1750, or accept $1700. I'm a little disinclined to go lower than those recent sales, but, on the other hand, it seems silly to blow the deal over $50 bucks, you know?

Yes, it is silly. Given that you and I share similar beliefs about the second half of the year, you might be risking $500 to try to make $50. Not a prudent bet in my opinion. I imagine that trying to sell a falling knife can be just as painful as trying to catch one.

You pushed me the final little bit over the fence, and I accepted his offer.

Well, it was a message, not an offer. So I messaged him back to say I would take it if he offered. Funny thing is, exactly two minutes before he put that offer in, someone else put an offer in, also for $1700. And I almost took it by accident! Glad I noticed it was a different username.

I just sold a 9.4 copy of Ultimate Fallout #4, for $900. That was six days ago, but the price is pretty steady there, for now.

I sold my 9.8 ToyBiz variant of Spidey 2099 #1 for $1500 + a trade for a 9.6 copy.

I wasn’t gonna do it, but the idea of still having a 9.6 for my PC put it over the top.

Plus, it was direct through PayPal, so, no e-bay fees.

Sorry! The regular cover. The variant would be at least 5x I think, maybe more. I didn't notice that yours was a variant.

Wow that is crazy. I sold a 9.4 to a friend about 5 years ago for $60 bucks. Doh!
I bought the variant years ago for $18 bucks. Had it graded unpressed. Wondering if I should CPR it?

If you do, do it quick! This market won't last.

FYI, I know a great presser, who is only about 4-5 weeks I think. Let me know if you want his details.

Well now, that's my favorite leverage position to be in. To be able to message back and say "You aren't the first person to offer $1,700...make it $1,750 if you want it".
It strikes me how easy it was for me to dismiss $50 just because the book was $1,700. But we sell $100 books all the time, and $50 is a big deal then. I guess maybe it's because of the different level of risk in not selling.

That's exactly it. But you are absolutely right, we need to be cognizant of the fact that $50 is, all by itself, a lot of money. That's why I almost always charge for shipping ... that stuff adds up FAST.

One time, years ago, I got an offer for a car from an insurance company. It had been totaled in a wreck, and they took a few days to pull some comps from local dealers. Now, this was years ago, and I was really bad at negotiating then. (Still am, but I'm getting better.) So, in my head, I told myself: whatever they offer, add $20 to cover the pair of khakis that got torn in the wreck. When you are talking about ~$10,000 for a car, NO ONE would refuse just $20 extra on the deal, right? And $20 bucks is a free pizza! So that was my plan.

Funny thing was, the offer came in WAY higher than it should have, due to the comps being high. The car was worth $9,000, about the same that I paid for it just seven months earlier. But the offer was $11,200!

What is hilarious about that story is, I was desperate not to seem too eager. But I was also shocked, that the offer was that high! So shocked, that the only thing I could think to say was exactly what I rehearsed: "Okay, but I'm gonna need $20 more, for a replacement pair of khakis. They were torn in the wreck."

I could just feel waves of annoyance from her, coming through the phone. But, through what I'm sure were clinched teeth, she said, "Fine. Eleven thousand, two hundred ... and TWENTY dollars."

Deal!

Oh, I should clear that up ... I'd already accepted his offer unofficially via the eBay messages. He was only after the other guy in terms of then putting in an offer through eBay's system. So I didn't feel like I could say, "Oh, sorry, you're too late!"

Now, if the other guy had offered BEFORE I responded to the email...

@TedSaid I know it's a humorous anecdote, but it also reminds me of the flip-side of that. Once an offer is made, you can lock it in or you can re-open negotiations...for both sides. I saw a situation with a negotiation for a 7 year retail space lease at $10,000 per month ($840,00) in total). At the conclusion the potential renter tried to push for a tiny little concession (something like two designated parking spaces). I think the last minute request spooked the building owner because he could have just turned it down. Instead he said "I will get back to you on that"...and when he got back to them it was to tell them that he had given the space to a much larger national company.

I don't currently have my WWBN #33 OW/W 8.0 for sale but I paid $285 for it only 2 months ago. This is ending in a few minutes on ebay. Would you sell for whatever this ends up selling for or continue to keep it for your personal collection?

Sell!

Of course, that's my answer for every key right now. I think all of these you will be able to buy back later for less. Or, you can do what I do, and use the money to buy a bunch of raws, get them graded, send them over to MCS and double your money. THEN buy it back later.

@Tedsaid you have me convinced. I also bought another copy, listed as a comicconnect 6.5 about a month ago, so I can always keep that one and hope it gets at least a 5.5 if I ever have it slabbed.

I am questioning selling or holding everything.

Where are people when it comes to the latest trend of newsstand vs direct editions? Is there room for further growth?

I saw this sale today and it blew me away. I cannot decide if the $3500 price was reached due to it being in the old holder or if it was based solely on the newsstand classification. Perhaps it is time to offer my 9.6 newsstand copy up for sale. I would 'downgrade' by buying a direct copy or living with my 9.4.

GI Joe 21 CGC 9.6 - $3500 for Newsstand Copy

@Buzzetta IDK. I see a ASM 361 9.8 Direct goes for about $1000. Newsies are in the $1600 range.

The old rule of a 10%-15% premium for newsstands seems to be inaccurate now.

@Buzzetta if you say the following words aloud "GI Joe #21 in a CGC 9.6 Newsstand is selling for $3500" and it doesn't sound insane, then continue to hold onto it.

So, just got two separate offers for Star Wars: Shadow of the Empire #3. I had it listed for $74 (I know @ebaymafia, I know).

The offers came in at $44 and $61. I was going to decline both, but two offers coming in so close to each other got my Spidey sense tingling. I go to ebay and there is only i other listed at $224 + shipping. I go to GoCollect, and it has a FMV at $600! Uh ohh, do we have another Star wars canon rocket here?

I can’t even comprehend the greed of the Buyers, here. Why wouldn’t they just buy at that price, if sales are that high above the asking price?

Decline & raise that price.

@Scifinator I'm skeptical about that Gocollect info. It looks like it's all based on one recent sale of a CGC 9.6 for $129. I don't think it's at $600 but there probably is a reason why you are getting two offers back to back. Anything special about that book?

It looks like a lot of copies are changing hands recently. Must be some kind of significance to it. I would expect this isn't going to be your only chance to sell it.
