Death of Superman & Reign of the Supermen Questions14053

CBCS newbie here that has a bunch of comics that I held since I was a kid.

I have multiple copies of most of the Death or Superman, Reign of Supermen, Funeral for a Friend, and Return of Superman and I am having trouble figuring out which are valuable and should be slabbed (if any). Black bags, white bags, unbagged, embossed, etc. Can anyone link me to a resource that describes the differences especially for Superman #75? Not sure if they are first editions or fourth editions and don't know how to tell.

Thanks in advance!

If the viagra is working you should be well over a 9.8. xkonk private msg quote post Address this user
The prices aren't necessarily accurate but I find comicbookrealm to be useful for telling the difference between printings, variants, etc.

Excellent info. I love the GoCollect website! Thanks!

Does CBCS open the poly-bagged editions to grade them? Doesn't that slightly diminish the value if they do?

@RonMob - You can’t grade or slab a poly-bagged comic. If it is sent to CBCS or CGC, they will remove it from the bag. Another thing about poly-bagged books, the seam can leave an impression or mark on the back cover. It can usually be pressed out.

I always suggest removing it from the bag yourself, if you're going to grade it, because you then are able to 'pre-screen' your own comic yourself.

One more question on these Death of Superman comics...assuming that I believe they will be rated at 9.6 or 9.8 do their values at this time warrant grading and certification? GoCollect indicates that Superman #75 is valued around $60 at 9.6 and $120 at 9.8 (in its various iterations) and Superman #123 is valued around $40/$99. What is a rule of thumb that you you all use to determine when it is cost effective to slab a book?

I also discovered that I have Static #1 which seems to be highly valued at $160 @ 9.6 and $300 @ 9.8 but does not appear to be widely certified (around 200 copies) or traded. Mine is probably 9.4 or 9.6 - Worth certifying?

it really depends...if it's just for your personal collection you get one answer, if it's with the intent to sell then you have to do the math.

Grading is $18, press is $12..so potentially $30 per book..then shipping to and from CBCS then what do you think it will sell for...that Superman 75 in 9.8 is $120 but! ebay fees, paypal fees you're now closer to $100..and you will have say $40 in for grading and shipping...so profit of $60?? Then have to look at what could you sell it for ungraded? If you can sell for close to the $60 then not really worth grading...and this is 9.8....takes very little to drop to 9.6 and now you would be at zero or less

But like I say...if it's for your personal collection so you know it's graded and protected...then why not...
