Hello all. I used to collect as a kid and sold a few thousand books in the mid 80s to buy my first motorcycle. I held onto a few books that I thought might have value someday and also bought a bunch of Death of Superman books in the 90s. I have the two books below and have very little idea what conditions these books would grade as, if they would be helped by pressing (not sure what pressing can repair) and if they are really more valuable if certified. I would love some feedback! Thanks all! |

If the viagra is working you should be well over a 9.8. | xkonk private msg quote post Address this user
One of the main things that pressing can help with is bends/ripples, and it's hard to tell with these since the bag is showing a lot of ripples. In terms of being 'worth more' certified, that's maybe possibly the case, but I think of grading more as removing uncertainty. If I look at a book on eBay or wherever and it seems VF, it might be or I might not be able to see some other problem with it. If the book is graded VF I know it's basically VF. They're cool books though! Welcome to the forum. |

@RonMob - Welcome to the forums. Like @xkonk said, you need to take the comics out of the bags and show pictures of the front and back of the book. It’s hard enough to get a grade estimate from a picture, it’s impossible if the book is in the bag. Both of the books you posted are very collectable - there’s definitely a market for both comics.

@RonMob welcome Ron!! This site is a decent tool to help with grading if you don't have a grading guide handy! Basically has picture examples in all sorts of categories and you click on the defects and watch the potential grade sink and sink and sink!!! lol!! https://comicbookgradingtool.com/ |

Thanks for the welcome and info guys and thanks for that link @KatKomics - that is pretty cool. I am attaching a few better photos out of bags and would love to hear your estimations on what score these books would grade as is or if pressed. Can pressing remove the small creases by the staples? Can it improve the crease above the word "this" on top of GL76? Is the staple placement on these books an issue? |

@RonMob - Those books look much better than they did in the bags. I am far from a pressing expert, but I know that pressing cannot remove color-breaking creases, fix tears, or cure all ills. It will however, remove most minor dents, creases, and dings. In addition, pressing includes a dry cleaning of the comic, which will really improve the look of those white back covers. So those books will look and present better. After pressing, I would conservatively guess that the Green Lantern book would be in the 7 range, and the Daredevil in the 8+ range. Take a look at some books posted on MCS (you can blow up their pictures really big) and see if you can find raw books in similar condition and see what grade MCS is giving them. PS - Also check the interiors for writing (sigs too), tears, clipped coupons, detached centerfolds, page count, etc. PSS - Ditch the bags and get some Mylites and fullbacks. You will thank me and never use cheap plastic bags and boards for your “good” books again. |

Absolutely get them graded, I grade every key. I grade nothing without it being pressed first. The color break at the top of the Green Lantern will be with you forever, but I see it as a 7.5 to 8, the Daredevil between 9 and (after a press) maybe 9.2-9.4. That’s me squinting into my phone screen, mind you. Welcome to the club. |

The Green Lantern book looks more like a FN 6.0-6.5 to me While the Daredevil book looks a bit nicer, noway it ever ends up a 9.2-9.4. 8.0-9.0 Topps on that book IMHO |

Green lantern looks like a 6.5 Daredevil 8.0 After I press I have no idea, upside they may jump .5 to maybe a full point, but that's a guess. Welcome to the forum |

@RonMob I don't think there's any question you should slab them both. And if you're going to slab them then you should also have them cleaned and pressed. No need to complicate the decision.

I want to thank you all for your input. Certification is new concept to me and you have all helped a lot. I have gone through my remaining collection in the last 48 hours and reviewed their values on the gocollect.com site that @Jake let me know about and I had a lot of pleasant surprises (and some disappointments). My original guess of rating for these books was GL 7.5 and DD 8.5. I will let you know what they come back as many months from now. |
