Action Comics #9 - Calvin Ellis Superman - Did I find a Unicorn?14024

Collector Paulbg2000 private msg quote post Address this user
Ok....so I was digging and pulled this book for $4 from the local comic shop on Friday. I got it home and realized it appears to be a newsstand.

Probably a 9.2-9.4 grade was if I sent it in....so before I figure out if it's worth grading, I was just wondering if anyone has seen this before?

I can't find any Newsstand on the CGC or CBCS census reports and I can't find any on Ebay history...so either I'm misunderstanding that it's a newsstand and it's another variant or it's going to be a pretty hard to find book.

Any help would be appreciated.

So, here's the question, what's the one to have? Action Comics #9 or Final Crisis #7???

Final Crisis 7 is the one that's going to always be the front runner with the most heat...

This one will be running second place, but it's still 1st cover, origin and 2nd appearance. Cover A Direct is Trending at $40 raw right now without any type of formal announcement...

New 52 newsstand variants also have $3.99 cover price, while the regular editions were $2.99. I found them at Barnes & Noble and Books-a-Million.

I disagree. The number one rule collectors follow is: buy what you like. And this cover is so much better than some cameo issue that doesn't even name him IMO.

Action Comics #9 has a fantastic cover, it's the first full appearance (as listed on the label), and it has his full name and origin story.

I've just bought seven more copies of #9 raw and I'm completely ignoring Final Crisis #7. I could be wrong, in the end, but sticking to the rule "buy what you like" has worked out pretty well for me so far.

Wow ... I saw an auction on eBay for an Action Comics #9 CGC 9.8. It was bid up to $490 when I saw it, ended at $510. So I quickly posted my last copy up for sale, for $549. Got two offers at $500, accepted one.

And now I can't find that auction, the one that ended at $510 (IIRC). I wonder why that is?

Anyway, I'll reach out to that other potential buyer. Anyone have another copy to sell? I'll pass along your info, if so.

If they do announce that he will be the main character in the new black Superman movie the book will explode.

Oh, man, John Boyega would be SO much better than Michael B. Jordan. Jordan has the dramatic range and expressiveness of a giant pigeon.

I'd like to say I still turned out alright, but that would be a lie. flanders private msg quote post Address this user
I hope they find a better option than those two actors. @tedsaid I agree, Michael B. Jordan is awful and can't act. He was bad in the Creed movies and even worse in Black Panther.

He may be too old but I'd like Will Smith.

Final Crisis 7 Black cover variant is technically first cover.

But I still like both covers for AC9...more dramatic and not a floating head partially obscured by lettering.

I highly doubt it will be same character. If he is the main character in the movie I think the new black Superman will be Clark Kent. Not sure I read the whole link, but I didn't come across any indication that he would be a different Superman.

I just read the link again. They say it's not known if this would be Clark Kent or Calvin Ellis. I have a hard time seeing them gamble on an alternate earth story while introducing a black Superman. Seems like an awful lot for the public to digest and the social media to pick at. On the other hand if you just make Clark Kent a black man everyone says "bravo...that's so brave and unexpected".

I saw that! Like, 30 minutes ago, I was looking at some covers on the 'bay. And, in fact, I was too harsh before about the 'B' cover. Alex Ross is awesome, and that cover is not bad at all. I might try to find a raw copy cheap, if there are any still around.

But yeah, my money's on the bigger story ... the Hulk #181, if you will, rather than the #180.

I think they take the same approach they did with The Joker...

Maybe they're realizing that building a shared universe just isn't working for them and stand alone movies are the way to go?
