You do know that the new guy brings the donuts, right? DWeeB1967 private msg quote post Address this user
Yea five albums is tough. I really like Queensryche and I didn't include them in my original list ("Operation: Mindcrime," anyone? ). I could have also replaced Iron Maiden's "Number of the Beast" with "Powerslave."

And, if we include greatest hits?? I'd start with the Led Zeppelin 4-disc set and go from there.

This thread really made me want to listen while I work today. šŸ˜„

@DWeeB1967

Operation: Mindcrime was a fantastic album!

Queensryches best, IMO.

Very reminiscent of the Wall.

Few bands do concept albums anymore.

@Siggy - Out of my top 5 albums,... 4 albums on the list will ebb out and be replaced. And maybe eventually flow back in. Always a fluctuation. There are just so many.

But Sabotage is F'ing Badass! It is permanently in my top 5.

Ozzy never sounded better, and those songs are epic.
One day during my senior year in commercial art, our teacher let us listen to music on his tape deck if anyone had cassettes with them. Of course in those days one out of three "stoners" carried a boom box in a gym bag, with a dozen or so tapes rattling around. I popped in Sabotage, and the teacher naturally kept the volume somewhat low during Hole In The Sky, but when Don't Start Too Late began he really liked the acoustic guitars, so he rushed over to turn it up to a healthy level. My friend and lead guitar of the band we were in never took his eyes off his work and quietly, but loud enough for other students to hear, says "You'll be SORRrryyyy."

He practically knocked over an easle trying to reach the volume button when Symptom Of The Universe started

No question that Sabotage is the peak of the Ozzy years. Ozzy screamed his ass off on that album! I think Ozzy basically blew his voice out on the Sabotage tour, as he has never been able to hit those highs since. I would even extend my first statement to say that Volume 4, Sabbath Bloody Sabbath and Sabotage together represent the peak period of the original lineup. While I played the hell out of Paranoid and Master of Reality as a kid, I got a little worn out on them. The first album is one that I have never gotten tired of for some reason. It is just timeless! I thought Technical Ecstasy and Never Say Die were a little more hit-or-miss. Both had some classics (Back Street Kids and Johnny Blade come immediately to mind) but overall not as great as the preceding albums. I loved the Dio years! I thought they reached the next level artistically. It was a much needed change for both parties, obviously, as Ozzy went on to discover Randy Rhoads and record some amazing records. Diary of a Madman is definitely in my personal top five.

@Jabberwookie, it was actually self-titled but had a three-legged dog on the front. My #1 AIC album, which says ALOT cause Dirt, SAP, and Jar of Flies are great as well

Ah ha!

Iā€™d never heard it referred to as Tripod before. I learned something new!

I have to admit I always considered that one of their weaker albums because it was so Jerry Cantrell heavy (not a bad thing by any means) because Layne was in pretty rough shape for most of that recording.

Couldnā€™t agree more about Sap and Jar of Flies. Those two albums really showed what a talented band they were.

I also really enjoyed the heck out of Facelift.

Good stuff and good memories!

You're right about the lack of concept albums, @Jabberwookie.

I wonder if that's because of the way people consume music these days. Younger people, as a whole, don't seem to sit down and listen to an "album" from cover to cover anymore. A concept album would be lost on listeners who only listen to the music piecemeal.

concept albums are harder to write. few bands take enough time to craft a truly great album anymore. its all about singles witch tend to be simple, easy to understand AND stand on their own. none of that lends itself to a theme. there are still smaller bands doing concept stuff though....

Also, record companies push for singles. Singles = airplay = $$$

also albums don't make $$ so the record company won't pay out for extra studio time. remember when bands got to rent out castles and mansions for weeks or months just to write an album (stones, STP, sabbath)? even singles (particularly rock) don't make $$ these days. its all about the tour.... oh wait.... I mean having your music in big blockbuster movies.....errrr ummm... commercials?

Holy crap! This thread exploded!

I totally agree. The way I always looked at it was that by 1991, those guys were in their 30s and had just gotten a taste of the spotlight, with the One video blowing up for them, and the grammy they should have won for it.

So, it's definitely more mainstream than I preferred, but I get its place in the catalogue.

I congratulate their success on that album, that tour was crazy, and really didn't help Hetfield's voice one bit.
What irritates me about it is, once they did get "a taste of the spotlight," it suddenly became okay to be the arena band they always mocked.

@Siggy

Totally get what youā€™re saying, but once they got a taste of that success, can you blame them for liking it?

I loved that they built a following with no videos (until One) and no real radio airplay, but I have to think that was nowhere near as fun as being THE heavy metal band.

However, I have frequently missed that band I watched on the Cliff Em All video.

They seemed more fan friendly and less corporate.

Good call on Sailing the Seas of Cheese!

Did you know that when Jason left (I think?) Les auditioned for Metallica.

They claimed he was too good for what they did in music.

I donā€™t know if thatā€™s the serious answer and it was more about styles, but Metallica with Claypool would have been a sight...or sound, rather.

It was actually after Cliff died that Les auditioned.

Years ago, there was a store outside of Houston named Texas Tapes and Records. It was run by a guy who was friends with many members of many bands. Metallica did an in-store appearance there the day they played Houston on the "Ride the Lightning" tour. There were only about 30 fans there (literally!!! Can you imagine?) so there was plenty of opportunity to chat with the band. They were all really cool guys. I remember Lars spent the whole time sucking his teeth. I guess he had some lunch lodged in his molars or something. šŸ˜„

Oh, and the name of the guy who owned the store?? Jeff Hammer. Is that an awesome name for a guy who hangs out with metal bands or what??

Thatā€™s a cool story!

Reminds me of seeing Nirvana at a 200 person club just before they blew up.

Did you ever have Z-Rock in Houston?

We had it here and I know Austin and Denver had it.

Anyway, there was a dj named Mad Max Hammer. Two great metal names!

I don't think we had Z-Rock, @Jabberwookie. Our main rock station used to be 101 KLOL. They had been around since the 70s if not before. In the past 20 years, they have changed format to play latino music. That's a shame, too. They were a good station.

Now, Houston radio sucks. We have one classic rock station that plays the same songs over and over and a college radio station out of a suburb that is hit and miss.

Here are some photos of the signed RIP magazine. All 4 of the original members signed the cover. Mustaine,Ellifson,Poland, and Samuelson. Mustaine also signed an inside page for me. I asked Gar Samuelson why he was not on the cover photo. He told me they wanted to put make up on him and he refused. He passed away back in 1999 of liver failure.
This one is definitely staying in the PC.

@BrianGreensnips Nice! I've got a few signed cassettes (the paper card that came in the cassette cases) from the old Texas Tapes and Records days: Queensryche, Ratt, Twisted Sister, WASP... I forget who else.

Ah, the good old days. My kids will never know what they missed.

I have a ton of signed items from bands and members in bands. Some gotten by me in person and some gotten by a friend who works in the industry and goes to a lot of shows and is backstage. The lithographs were ordered through a gallery that was famous for doing them.

Just some of my authenticated items.

1) Signed drum head from Motley Crue all the members
2) Signed cassette tape cover from Poison (yes, a cassette tape cover - I'm old)
3) Signed Scorpions photo
4) Signed Megadeth Photo the entire band
5) Signed 3 x 5 card by Jimmy Page, Signed Robert Plant album, and signed CD from John Paul Jones
6) Signed CD and album of David Lee Roth solo
7) Signed Van Halen Fair Warning album by all the original members
8) 2 CD's and 2 albums signed by Judas Priest
9) An entire set of 2013 Topps Heavy Metal signed cards. Yep, even Axl's (all purchased for next to nothing when they came out).
10) Signed Roger Waters bass pick guard
11) Signed drum head by all the original members of KISS
12) Signed drum head by all the original members of Black Sabbath
13) Signed RUSH Power Windows Lithograph by all the members
14) Signed AC/DC For Those About To Rock Lithograph by all the members of the band
15) Signed 3 x 5 cards of all the members of The Rolling Stones (Bill Wyman, Keith Richards, Mick Jagger, Ronnie Woods, and Charlie Watts).
16) Signed Thin Lizzy entire band 3 x 5 cards framed and mounted
17) Willie Nelson signed pick guard
18) Signed pick guard and set list from the band America
19) Signed ZZ Top CD by the entire band
20) Signed Iron Maiden band signed photo

I could go on but I won't. I brought a bunch of my stuff to be authenticated and the guys who did it were floored. So much so that they cut me a deal and shaved a bunch of the price off because they wanted to see more of my collection. It was a blast.

Thatā€™s really cool!

I had planned on getting my Marvel Premiere 50 signed by Alice Cooper at Texas Frightmare last year, but then the ā€œunpleasantnessā€ happened.

Maybe this year?

Itā€™s a bucket list item, so Iā€™m hoping to cross it off.

Out of my collection, my pride and joy isn't the most valuable item, or the hardest to get item. It is the Thin Lizzy signed 3 x 5 cards that are matted and framed. To have a piece of paper than was held and signed by Phil Lynott means so much to me. I can't put into words how much that means.

@Jabberwookie I have a signed and hand written lyric sheet of Schools Out. It was written by one of the band member, then passed around and signed by the band and Alice.

Amen to that!! Love Phil Lynott and Thin Lizzy!

I was in Ireland in 2017...I had several pints in Phil Lynott's favourite pub just because it was Phil's favourite pub. The man was a genius in my opinion.
