That's a great question. But like you said, My tastes have changed a bit in the last 18 years! And so have mine.

As we mature and evolve, our top 5 today may not even be on the same list a year from now.

I'm like @DWeeB1967, I want variety in my music to suite my mood. These are the 5 that I would choose today, in no particular order. And I kinda cheated and picked some "best of" sets. But, I figure I posed the question, I can alter the rules!!! LOL

Pink Floyd The Wall. That one will NEVER leave my list!!
Times makin' changes - the best of Tesla.
Timespace: the best of Stevie Nicks.
The best of Black Sabbath (2000)
Red, white and Crue.

I'd love to do a Tesla mixed cd, but that's definitely "altering" the rules too much. I had to choose between Queen and Sabbath, but I'd love some Freddie in there!!!

And The Wall is the perfect album in my mind.

No doubt!

And from my readings of rock history, the reason Roger Waters was booted from the band is because he wanted to do more Wall albums. But the Pink Floyd band members said "we already did The Wall", let's move forward and do something else.

That's my understanding anyway.

Water's was probably like "More Insanity! I love this stuff!" and the bandmates are like "Ah man, enough of this Crazy shit already! Can't we move on?"

I am a little late to the party, but I am quite opinionated on the subject of music, so here goes... I would take the first four Metallica albums over anything by Megadeth, although I am fond of both Rust in Peace and Peace Sells. As for the “black album”, I think the biggest issue that I have with it is that it was overproduced. The material was decent but it was so polished, and polished and polished (and polished, need I go on?)that it shone so bright that you couldn’t even see what was underneath all the polish. I like my music a little bit more raw, generally speaking. As far as paring down to only five albums, it’ll never happen! I have over 300 in my phone, so I would at least need to have a way to play that on my desert island, or I ain’t goin’! If I had to select the best album from my five favorite bands, I imagine the list would go something like this (just don’t ask me again tomorrow because you may get a different answer): Black Sabbath/ Heaven and Hell, Judas Priest/ Painkiller, Iron Maiden/ Powerslave, AC/DC / Back in Black and Testament/ Souls of Black. If I was looking to diversify I would probably go with Pink Floyd/ Dark Side of the Moon, Johnny Cash/ At Folsom Prison, Count Basie/ Live at the Birdland and Simon and Garfunkel’s Greatest Hits.

@Pre_Coder No question, Sabbath is #1. The most innovative and influential band in the history of music. I spent years playing in bands in my younger days. It was the first time I heard the Heaven and Hell album that shaped my destiny for years to come. It wasn’t 45 seconds into “Neon Knights” before I was saying to myself “This is what I want to do!”

I had to dig all the way back to high school, but I think I've come up with 5 that would hold me over on a long car ride, even if they aren't the perfect 5. Sadly, I think all but one come from pretty much the same era:

U2: Joshua Tree
Def Lepard: Hysteria
GnR: Appetite for Destruction
Eagles: Hotel California
New Order: Substance 1987 (this is a compilation album but most of you wouldn't know that or care).

@Siggy - Out of my top 5 albums,... 4 albums on the list will ebb out and be replaced. And maybe eventually flow back in. Always a fluctuation. There are just so many.

But Sabotage is F'ing Badass! It is permanently in my top 5.

My problem is, there aren’t that many albums I like as a whole. If an album comes out & I like half the songs, that’s pretty solid.

So, I thought about which albums I’ve listened to the most & didn’t feel the need to skip a track.

In my top 5, the Blink-182 record is the most iffy. It’s probably their best, but there are a few songs I still skip.

Honestly, their ‘California’ album is more mature & perhaps better. But I’ve listened to ‘Take Off . . . ‘ for 20 years now & ‘California’ is only four years old. I can’t bump ‘Take Off . . .’ from the list just yet. I have to see how I feel in a few years.

Ozzy never sounded better, and those songs are epic.
One day during my senior year in commercial art, our teacher let us listen to music on his tape deck if anyone had cassettes with them. Of course in those days one out of three "stoners" carried a boom box in a gym bag, with a dozen or so tapes rattling around. I popped in Sabotage, and the teacher naturally kept the volume somewhat low during Hole In The Sky, but when Don't Start Too Late began he really liked the acoustic guitars, so he rushed over to turn it up to a healthy level. My friend and lead guitar of the band we were in never took his eyes off his work and quietly, but loud enough for other students to hear, says "You'll be SORRrryyyy."

He practically knocked over an easle trying to reach the volume button when Symptom Of The Universe started

Holy crap! This thread exploded!

I totally agree. The way I always looked at it was that by 1991, those guys were in their 30s and had just gotten a taste of the spotlight, with the One video blowing up for them, and the grammy they should have won for it.

So, it's definitely more mainstream than I preferred, but I get its place in the catalogue.

Not at all. All music is welcome!!

And those bands you mentioned are favorites, as well.

Bring up anything you like. I just was carrying on the Megadeth vs Metallica conversation that evolved in the other thread.

While Metallica is definitely a favorite (maybe THE favorite) my tastes are all over the place.

I had my Ipod on shuffle one day when a friend was riding with me and we went from Type O Negative to Bill Withers to The Smiths and finished with some Johnny Cash.

My tastes are all over the place.

A typical argument between me and any "true" Metallica fan...

"True" fan: I stopped liking Metallica when they released the Black album.

Me: So you're a true fan because you're no longer a fan.

True fan: Yeah, because that's when they sold out and started to suck.

Me: I liked the Black album, and the albums after it. As a matter of fact, I still like Metallica.

True fan: Yeah, that's why you're not a true fan.

Me: Yeah, I suppose there are true Beatles fans who stopped liking them when they released Rubber Soul.

True fan: *blink*

Yes!

Admittedly, my "true fan" status may have taken a hit since I've not listened to Hardwired or Lulu.

But, back in the day, I defended the Black Album, and even Load and Reload. I have no issue with a band wanting to experiment with their sound.

It's what talented bands do.

Heck, I even like parts of St. Anger.

When you look at St. Anger as a Hetfield solo album with Metallica as the backing band, it makes way more sense.

But, the Black Album does seem to be the defining point to where their albums had some weaker songs than before.
Out of the first 4 albums there's not really any songs that I would skip, but I'll skip Holier Than Thou, Nothing Else Matters and Struggle Within.

More with Load and Reload, but the good songs on those albums still rock, and enjoy them.

Memory Remains sounds so Sabbath it's awesome.

Gosh, this is a terrible question. I can’t limit myself to just five albums!!!

But, seriously, I'll give this a shot.

David Bowie- Aladdin Sane or possibly Ziggy Stardust

Metallica- Master of Puppets beating RTL by a nose

Black Sabbath- Paranoid one of the tougher choices to make

Led Zeppelin- Physical Graffiti- I must have Kashmir

Alice in Chains- Sap this one was a difficult choice, too.

And I'm leaving out Pink Floyd's Animals, The Wall (Agreed in that it's perfect) and Darkside of the Moon.

Also, no 2112 by Rush, and I'll be without any Roy Orbison and I have no punk in there.

Too tough!

Best Metallica albums? For me It's MoP, RTL, Justice, Kill Em All...then the rest....

Megadeth: Rust in Peace, Countdown to Extinction, Peace Sells, So Far, and then the rest...

Thoughts?

For me, there are standout albums in each of Metallica's "phases."

Ride the Lightning - My favorite of the first four
Black Album - The gateway Met album for me
Load - Had that album been released under any other band name, it would've been lauded
Death Magnetic - A great album of where they are now

Megadeth is a bit simpler for me. Countdown and Youthanasia were the gateways. I really like The System has Failed, as Mustaine came back hard. And angry.

Iron Maiden: Number of the Beast
Steely Dan: Aja
Neil Young: Harvest
Johnny Cash: At Folsom Prison
One of Ray Charles' Atlantic Records albums (not sure which)

Argh! Your list reminded me that I left off Maiden.

They were my favorite Metal band before I heard Metallica.

Still just great stuff. Saw them about 7 years ago and Bruce sounded better than he did in the 80s, which was impressive because he sounded amazing then.

They had great energy!

And to anyone thinking this is only hard rock or metal, I love all kinds of music.

Depending on my mood, I’ll listen to a lot of Depeche Mode, Cure, Devo, Smiths (Morrissey might be an odd duck, but he sing) Beastie Boys, Joy Division, some new order, XTC, and so on...

I look at music as an all you eat buffet and I try to listen to it all.

Heck, I’ve seen Reba McEntire in concert.

Although, one of my best concerts was the Highwaymen. For $20 I got to see: Willie Nelson, Johnny Cash, Waylon Jennings and Kris Kristoferson on one stage.

I still feel like I should have paid more for that line up...

Only five is REALLY hard, but these come to mind. An album you can listen to from beginning to end is tough to find.

Alice In Chains “Tripod”
Zeppelin “III”
TOOL “Lateralus”
Guns n Roses “Use Your Illusion I”
Tom Petty “Wildflowers”

Honorable mentions
Fleetwood Mac “Rumours”
STP “Purple”
Pink Floyd “Dark Side of the Moon”
Al Green “Greatest Hits”
I know greatest hits is cheating, but it’s great

Yea five albums is tough. I really like Queensryche and I didn't include them in my original list ("Operation: Mindcrime," anyone? ). I could have also replaced Iron Maiden's "Number of the Beast" with "Powerslave."

And, if we include greatest hits?? I'd start with the Led Zeppelin 4-disc set and go from there.

This thread really made me want to listen while I work today. 😄

No question that Sabotage is the peak of the Ozzy years. Ozzy screamed his ass off on that album! I think Ozzy basically blew his voice out on the Sabotage tour, as he has never been able to hit those highs since. I would even extend my first statement to say that Volume 4, Sabbath Bloody Sabbath and Sabotage together represent the peak period of the original lineup. While I played the hell out of Paranoid and Master of Reality as a kid, I got a little worn out on them. The first album is one that I have never gotten tired of for some reason. It is just timeless! I thought Technical Ecstasy and Never Say Die were a little more hit-or-miss. Both had some classics (Back Street Kids and Johnny Blade come immediately to mind) but overall not as great as the preceding albums. I loved the Dio years! I thought they reached the next level artistically. It was a much needed change for both parties, obviously, as Ozzy went on to discover Randy Rhoads and record some amazing records. Diary of a Madman is definitely in my personal top five.

Ah ha!

I’d never heard it referred to as Tripod before. I learned something new!

I have to admit I always considered that one of their weaker albums because it was so Jerry Cantrell heavy (not a bad thing by any means) because Layne was in pretty rough shape for most of that recording.

Couldn’t agree more about Sap and Jar of Flies. Those two albums really showed what a talented band they were.

I also really enjoyed the heck out of Facelift.

Good stuff and good memories!
