@HeinzDad I'm glad you took that with the humor I intended!!! I remember back when the HUGE debate was whether Megadeth or Metallica were better. While I tend to like Metallica better, I like many Megadeth tunes also. I think @Jabberwookie is right about both bands being better.

But Whitesnake was actually my first love between the three bands. Their early, more bluesy, tunes are some of my all time favorite songs. I often listen to the whole "Ready an' Willing" cd. "Love man" and "Ain't gonna cry no more" are excellent!!!

Ha ha!

I saw them open for Motley Crue.

It’s kind of hard to explain hair metal to anyone who didn’t grow up during the 80s and sadly, bands like Whitesnake and Kiss really changed their look and sound to fit in.

For me it was always Metallica, Maiden, Anthrax and to a lesser extent Megadeth.

Not a bad time for thrash metal, at all.

And, I do also like Whitesnake. Their hair metal phase isn’t the best look, but the music holds up for the most part.

Although, Here I Go Again was a crap song then and worse now.

It’s like the Batman and Robin of songs.

Metallica would not have lasted as long if Dave remained in the band. He is not, or atleast, was not a team player. It's his way or the highway. I feel Hetfield is the better writer. To me, if you compare Metallica's best (probably MOP or AJFA...maybe RTL) to Megadeth's best Rust In Peace...Metallica has the better output...just my opinion.

Master of Puppets benefits from stellar production and sound engineering by Flemming Rasmussen. It really is a phenomenal album. Megadeth didn't benefit from great production until Rust in Peace came out. Peace Sells, and So Far So Good So What still retain a raw, unpolished sound. Comparing Puppets to Peace, I would probably throw Puppets ahead just based on the sound and production of it. However, Marty's solo on Tornado of Souls is the stuff of legend. Both bands faltered mightily throughout the 90s. Cryptic Writings was ok. Risk and Youthanasia not so much. Load and Reload were definitely loads.

@Studley_Dudley You're spot on about production. Megadeth returned to form in the 2007, United Abominations is quite good...lost track after this.

So, the funny thing is that you can actually do a head to head comparison of the two.

Check out Mechanix by Megadeth (off Killing is my business) then Four Horseman by Metallica.

It's the same song, but Metallicas has better lyrics (IMO) and is slower and crunchier while Megadeth's is faster.

Early Megadeth seemed to rely a lot on volume and speed, while Metallica found a more melodic(?) sound by RTL.

Funny thing about Rust in Peace is I hated it when I got it, but it holds up really well, but so do all 4 of the early Metallica albums.

The thing is, it doesn't have to be an either or thing, though. I like both, but Metallica is my #1.

They have been spotty since mid 90s, but still have their moments.

Although, I did not buy Hardwired, so I don't have a clue how that one is.

In all fairness, Dave was a drunk during the Metallica years. Once he dried up, his playing became a lot better, but that's just my humble opinion.

I would say they've actually improved substantially since United Abominations.. bringing back Ellefson back in 2010 with the same chemistry and then the addition of Kiko Loureiro in 2015 was a huge improvement, great guitar player...

Been a fan of both since I was a teenager...I've always leaned towards Megadeth. I'd put any Megadeth album up against Lulu and St Anger any day of the week (....even Risk).

I completely agree Metallica has better songs. That's where my curiosity starts; I feel Metallica has better songs, but Megadeth has better guitarists (not counting Cliff's Bass, of course).
Speaking strictly from an instrumental standpoint, I always thought too many of Hammett's solos sounded like guitar scale excersises stacked on top of each other, where Mustaine sounded imaginative.
If that makes sense.

I agree with you and I also feel Kirk relies too much on his wah wah pedal. I recognize Dave as a better guitarist from a lead guitarist perspective but I prefer Metallica's songs. 🍻

This is a topic I like. Just got back in town. I love both Metallica and Megadeth. There are things I like about both bands.
For Metallica, my favorite albums would be Kill Em All, Master of Puppets, and And Justice for All. The first time I heard the song Whiplash, I was hooked.

For Megadeth it would be Rust in Piece, Countdown to Extinction and Youthanasia. All Marty Friedman and Nick Menza albums. I think those two with Ellison and Mustaine was a killer lineup. I love hearing them on Ozzy's Boneyard and Liquid Metal. I also met the original line up and they signed a RIP magazine for me a long time ago. They all signed the cover and Mustaine also signed an inside photo. I am looking forward to the new album.
I hope Chuck is too.

As to the topic, good on Chuck; the last time I saw him I'd grabbed a 3-for-a-dollar book at one of his last minute convention blow-out sales, and I asked him if he could go any lower - we both had a good laugh.

On the subject of Chuck’s haul I’ll say this:

I’m glad he didn’t name the dealer that would not, or could not check out the collection before him. Though deductive reasoning says who it most likely is, I’m glad he didn’t blast the guy directly.

That said, I think it was in bad taste for him to say what he paid for the collection. To each their own, but I think it would have been respectful to the seller to leave that out.

I was stoked to buy 5 short boxes back in November. This sort of score is beyond what I could ever dream of.

About prices, Very Gary on You Tube mentions prices frequently. He also does a GPA comparison after getting slabbed books back. He usually states that the books were in rough shape and that is how he justifies what he spent. For the most part, I do enjoy his videos. I also enjoy Chuck's videos and I can appreciate how passionate Chuck is about comic books.

About a year ago I was walking out of the 7-11 and the guy says "Excuse Me sir?" I look back at him and he says "Are you going to pay for that coffee?" The sad irony is that when long-term memory becomes all that we have, we just keep telling stories like this one over and over.

I like Chuck on many levels, so perhaps prejudiced in his favor, but I don't see a problem with anything he did.

As usual, he's making a larger point, which is that LCS operators & their staff too often turn their backs on long-time customers when they're ready to sell, and that in this case, both Chuck AND the customer made out as a result of (presumably) Buddy's failure.

So a happy ending, but also a reminder to be smart & do the right thing.

On naming the price, that's a lotta cabbage (especially for what they're pictured holding as examples of the best of content), so I think it's 100% kosher to announce the amount to encourage other people looking to sell to consider Chuck as a serious potential buyer.

If (presumably) Buddy ends up a little embarrassed by this, good - he should be.

Happy buyer, happy seller, and (maybe) a sadder but wiser LCS owner who may do better next time.

And they all lived happily ever after.
