@DrWatson - I'm sure it was cheap. No doubt Chuck got it for a steal.

I wonder who the dealer was this guy had been doing business with for over 30 years that wasn't interested in making the drive (12 miles) for this collection,.. especially for a Treasure Trove of SA/BA books. After a 30+ year business relationship, the dealer would obviously know what the seller had.

I know dealers in the Dallas/Fort Worth/Duncanville area who would have made the drive in a heartbeat. But, there is always the possibility that dealers in the area don't have 40K to part with due to the pandemic. I don't know how their sales have been.

@poka you’re right. The seller does not look happy at all😕. Chuck definitely seems to be taking a shot at Buddy/ MCS. I doubt there will be any return shots fired, though. I would think Buddy has too much class for that. As to why nobody would travel from Arlington to Arlington to view the collection, the only thing I can think of is that maybe it was during the weather emergency? If this collector took the time to have all these comics slabbed it makes me wonder why he wouldn’t take the time to piece out his collection and get a much larger return. Maybe he had to have money NOW? That happens sometimes in life, but selling at that point usually results in the lowest possible return.

Buddy and Chuck have in the past taken shot at each other. This is not the first time

Per Chuck Seller has tried for months to sell the collection locally

@poka

This is only one example and on a much smaller scale, but I put my whole collection up for sale and got very few bites and zero offers.

I’m about 20-30 miles from Arlington, so there are plenty of stores around.

I guess I’m saying I’m not shocked he couldn’t work something out.

I think no one wants to tie up that amount of capital for the time it would take to sell those books.

One other thing I’ve noticed over the years is most comic shops like to give pennies on the dollar and an experienced collector won’t fall for that and has more options now than years past.

This might not be the answer for this seller, but I thought I’d share my take.

I called Milehigh myself once back perhaps twenty years ago and was considering selling my collection....the guy on the phone asked for some of the highlights, which I explained for him...when we were done his comment was, 5-7 cents a book is our normal offer...yada yada click

@Darkseid_of_town

Sounds exactly like my experienced.

I had a book valued at $40 in NM condition, and mine was, and they wanted to give me $3 for it.

I took my boxes to a shop and I had it estimated as being worth about 2k and they offered me $150.

It’s possible I overvalued my books, but not by that much.

And that was at Lone Star Comics, which is now MCS.

And, I get it, comic shops have to make money, collectors overvalue and exaggerate condition, etc...

But, I won’t lie, it felt like I was being ripped off so I decided I’d always sell them myself.

It looks like it was taken with an old Polaroid camera. It also looks like the seller is giving his puppy away.

Chuck does what every comic store. dealer, and flipper does. He buys low and sells higher. I haven't a clue why that bothers the same people that do the exact same thing he does. Is it envy because he's known in the industry, that he does it on a larger scale, or is it something else?

@DrWatson
Good point and I’d wondered that myself. If those slabs were the best of the best, maybe it wasn’t quite the goldmine after all?

@Towmater I’m not sure if you’re responding to what I said, but it’s close so I thought I’d clarify my position, at least.

I know those guys want to make money, just like I do. I think it’s more the degree to which you get lowballed.

I know going in that about the best I’ll get is maybe half of what they are worth, and most likely 25 percent.

I’m willing to live with that to avoid the work of shipping, selling etc...

But if I bring a book worth $100 and you offer me $10, I probably won’t do business with you then or in the future.

I tend to always feel bad for people who are desperate to sell because that’s when you get screwed.

Now, the guy in the Polaroid did just get 40k, so he’s got to be a little happy with it, but I’d guess he probably was needing cash.

But, I’m not against profit, just unbridled greed and sketchy ethics.

And, I’ll admit it’s easy to say in the abstract.

If I went to a garage sale and found a mid grade copy of Action Comics 1, what would I do?

I’d like to say that I’d share that wealth somehow and not just take advantage of a clueless seller, but that easy to say when I don’t have a few hundred grand in my hand that I could get for a few bucks.

So, I’m definitely sympathetic to people buying that low and selling high.

@Jabberwookie I wasn't replying to anyone or to you.

I was making a comment on most of the threads I've seen that deal with Mile High Comics and Chuck. As I wrote, I don't get all the cr-- that gets thrown his way. He's a business person who buys low and sells high. I've yet to go to a convention that a dealer doesn't do the exact same thing Chuck does.

If you don't believe what I just wrote then perform an experiment at the next convention you attend. Stand at a booth and offer more money than they did to an attendee for a book than he or she does if you are interested in it.

(Yes, his newsletters are somewhat over the top. However, he's repeating what the market has shown him works).

Ok, wasn’t sure. That’s why I was asking.

I have zero experience with Mile High other than seeing their ads in comics in the 80s.

One of these days, I need to check out that store.

It’s on my list along with Kevin Smiths shop.

I think it depends. I went to a con with some books to sell/trade and talked to a couple of vendors. One guy offered 70% of GPA/book value for some of them. Other stuff no one was interested in.

My LCS is basically the same. If I take them a key they can do 60-70%. When I took a couple long boxes of decent, but more common, books, then they're offering like a dollar a book.

I think, like @Towmater is saying, we all understand this if we think a little. Keys are where the money are and they're easy (easy enough) to move. A store isn't going to offer FMV because they have to make money somehow, but they can certainly offer more. But if you have common stuff, run fillers, cheap stuff that is going to just sit around for years even if someone will eventually pay $20 for it, then you can't pay a lot for that.

That’s the look when you think your books are worth 100K retail but you are either too lazy to sell them yourself, or you have to quickly unload them for many possible reasons for 40K.
I can relate, I slowly sell $10-$20 lots on EBay, try to average about $1500 a month in sales. (Used to be convention fodder) It is a lot of time, but this is definitely not the time to sell the good books, and I do not want my heirs stuck with long boxes of commons.
So, I suck it up, take pictures, figure a grade, list and ship, over and over.
