Does this hulk 181 still hold much value with the restoration that was done?

Maybe post what was done so we can discuss? I've only sold one copy, but it was restored & went for quite a bit. |

Here's CGC 8.5 Hulk 181 Restored. Not enough examples of 9.0's Where there's an amount on the right side that differs from the amount on the left; the right side is best offer accepted, the left was the asking price. |

It apparently had a marvel value stamp glued in place. That was the restoration.

It presented nice but I’ve never seen a comic with restoration that involved only the marvel stamp being reattached with glue

Wow, this question just came up last week. We all figured it would be a green label "married" but maybe the Marvel Value Stamp was determined to be from the same book? Sometimes I wonder, is it a legitimate negative reaction or is it just conditioning? I was conditioned to hate the PLOD, but now two of my favorite comic books that I own have moderate professional restoration. |

I guess the argument could also be said about trimming, color touch, detached centerfold etc...if we don't know there's a problem then there is no problem.

Also, C-1 means it was a very amateur job. B-1 is the highest I’d consider for submitting for restoration removal. |

Just crack it out, cut out the stamp and where the glue was applied. Send to cbcs and get a notation on the label that the Mvs cut out, no purple label of death

To some of you collectors what would the value of a cbcs 4.0 sig graded signed by Stan lee, romita and trimpe be?

Forgive my ignorance on all this, but why does a restore seem to turn everyone off so much? I get wanting an original, like a car, but I’ve rarely seen anyone turn down a 65 mustang because it had a CD player or back up camera. It might not be as valuable as the cherry original, but it’s not garbage. If my choice is between a restoration and nothing, I’d probably take a restoration. Just my thoughts, but what am I missing here? |

With encapsulated books, we have the presentation and the number grade. To me, the number is essentially a lie if the book is restored. I want to know exactly what I’m getting. If it’s like an Action Comics #1 or a Detective 27, I could probably live with it. Otherwise, it would bother me too much. |

@Jabberwookie I think to many collectors restoration is similar to a re-print but more "deceptive" if you will. To me, restoration (colour touch especialy), professional or amateur has the feeling of this great piece of art being altered by an (for the lack of a better word) "inferior" artist. Depending on the extent of the restoration, the vintage piece of art morphs into something part vintange/part new, part master artist/part "inferior" artist. I think, restoration on vehicles is totally accepted because while these restored vehicles are works of art, they're also tools of sorts. They get you from point A to point B, they must be functional to be useful, with comics, that's not the case. I'm definitely softening on restoration. It used to be a definite no-go but now I'm ok (to an extent) with restoration on GA books..not so much on anything after that. |

I recognize there is zero way of knowing for sure what I'm about to say, but I do consider it when purchasing for myself: On Golden Age books it doesn't bother me if that restoration occurred during that time period. Little Joey coloring in a little damage to keep his comic nice is a huge difference than a professional color touch restoration on a golden age book done today. It gets cloudier and cloudier as time periods proceed, but it is certainly not acceptable to me for a Modern under any circumstances. Not so in 40's, 50's and probably early 60's. This all said, I think its reasonable to assume the marvel stamp applier on this hulk 181 knew what he/she was doing and why he/she was doing it. I recently got graded a Mopsy #12 (St. Johns) from the 50's, It is the 1st Joe Sinnott professional artwork and had him sign the comic before he passed away. When I received the comic from CBCS Verified it was restored with color touch! I barely flinched under the reasonable assumption few are looking for this book; it's not worth terribly much, and the color touch likely occurred a long long time ago similar to the little joey thing above. |

I don't care, I've never owned a copy, always wanted one and bought it at a price I could afford and live with. I would rather have my restored copy than a copy with the top of the cover cut off. I'm sure many won't agree but to each there own. |
