Marvel Changes Immortal Hulk Art to Remove Alleged Anti-Semitic Imagery

Marvel has officially removed the alleged anti-Semitic imagery from the digital editions of Immortal Hulk #43 following fan outcry.

In response to the fan outcry over alleged anti-Semitic imagery in last week's Immortal Hulk #43, Marvel has edited the controversial panel out of the digital editions of the issue.

Marvel sent retailers a notice on last week stating, "Marvel is correcting and reprinting the main and variant editions of Immortal Hulk #43, originally on sale 2/3. Requests to return for exchange on Immortal Hulk #43 with these corrected versions may be made starting today." The same went for the digital purchases of the issue. While we have to wait for the printed corrections to be released, the digital corrections have already been made.

In the first edition of Immortal Hulk #43, artist Joe Bennett drew Bruce Banner (with one of the various Hulk personalities, "Joe Fixit," in control of his body) buying some jewelry with a stolen credit card. The name of the store, written in reverse in the store's window, was "Cronemberg's Jewery" (with the Y blocked out by the store clerk) with a Star of David, a noted Jewish symbol, in the window.

In the corrected digital version of the issue, the edit is fairly unsubtle, as simply all of the writing and signage in the window has been erased from the panel in its entirety.

Bennett explained that he just misspelled Jewelry while writing it backwards (there were a number of other store names written in reverse in store windows in the issue and Bennett misspelled a number of them, as well). As to the Star of David display, he noted on Facebook, "I have no excuse for how I depicted the Star of David. I failed to understand this troubling and offensive stereotype, and after listening to you all, I now understand my mistake. This was wrong, offensive, and hurtful in many ways. This is a mistake I must own, and I am sorry to everyone who I hurt by this. I am working with Marvel to correct this, and I am using this lesson to reflect on how I approach my stories and my work."

The first editions of the issue have become collectible items, but it is worth noting that Marvel is not doing an outright recall, but rather letting stores know that they can return the issues for replacements if they so choose to do so. The fact that it is not a "required" recall should make the issues a bit less rare (although, of course, even "required" recalls rarely lead to stores actually sending many copies back to the company, since the public tends to be drawn to "recalled" comic books).

And yet they have no problem of some guy buying a jewelry for his wife while hitting on the female clerk. That's acceptable. What is happening to our country.

I think I have two 'recalled' books that were similarly released and corrected in later printings. Neither is worth anything in particular as far as I know.

It was a stupid outcry; none of my family care. I’d bet loudest voices were non-Jews trying to defend those who do not care. This is NOT anti-Semitic, this is a mistake.

As a former precious gems guy, I'm most offended by the price - 1300?

Trust me - neither Marty nor Stan were self-haters...

Artists: Notoriously bad spelkers

Comic book production: Notoriously rushed

Mole hills: Sometimes made into mountains

Am I a bad person because the Tiffany bag ripoff & price of the necklace are the only things that bother me?

Well, he obviously intended to make the store Jewish. The name is a giveaway on top of the star. If he didn't know about various Jewish stereotypes I guess that's on him.

It's a reference to New York City's world-famous Diamond District - nothing more, nothing less.

@Redmisty4me Can you show me? I found a website or two about the district but none of them had the Star of David on them.

Are you saying you find the Star of David somehow objectionable?

As a Jew who worked in the Diamond District for years, I can tell you it's everywhere, and that the panel in question is a big slice of bupkis.

But if Jews (& non-Jews) choose to be offended, who am I to interfere?

Mazels.

In todays world people pick and chose what offends them day by day. Yesterday it was the cross, today it's the Star of David, what's going to offend somebody tomorrow.

Drawing the character of Bruce Banner that isn't even recognizable as Bruce Banner is offensive to me.

People are a scootch sensitive of late...

I think a part of this may be limited visual literacy; the creators of the story were looking for ways to tell us where the character is, and the Mogen in the background helps serve that purpose.

Very nostalgic - I'm just wondering if the cashier has had a nose job...

@Redmisty4me I don't find it objectionable at all. I was just asking for a reference since it seems like if the Star were all over the district it would be easy to find, and the panel wouldn't be a big deal since it literally exists on stores like in the art. Then Bennett, or a supporter, would just say "hey, look, that's how some stores are". Not that it would stop some people from being offended at the connotation, of course, but maybe Bennett could get some credit for researching his art (if not spellchecking it).

Well, it's a cheat to create the sense not only of the store itself, but to suggest where the character is nabe-wise.

It's a very, very, VERY Jewish area (the most overtly Jewish part of NYC you'll find outside of some parts of Brooklyn), including huge numbers of ultra-Orthodox, and there are Mogen & all other things Jewish everywhere you look.

Being familiar with it, I immediately recognized what he was doing, but it's art - it's suggesting a number of things (none offensive) in a single image, and that works better & worse in its various included elements.

It would be nize if peops could chill & give others the benefit of the doubt, especially now.

I read his statement and i have no idea why anyone would have been offended by the Star; i understood the problem to be solely related to the spelling error. “Jewery” i cannot see as being offensive, other than to my innate CopyEditor sense. And yes, the horrible art being used for Bruce drives me nuts, as well.

I think for those unfamiliar with the heavy Chosen involvement with the precious gem trade and/or places like the Diamond District and/or the often offal spelink of artists, the combination of various factors made it appear that there might have been some kind of weird anti-Semitic thing going on, but even in this heated/microscopic context, the creative intention (& innocent error) was clear, at least to me.
