CBCS GradedComics Silver AgeGrading Help Needed

Will the real 6.0 please stand up. CBCS vs cgc13884

Have I told you about the time I dropped off 3,000 comics at SDCC? Scifinator private msg quote post Address this user
So, here are two SS1's in 6.0 that are currently for sale online. Would like to see forum members chime in. Obviously there are a different set of flaws, but which 6.0 would you rather have displayed in your collection?

Both of these scans are by the same company.

Also note, that this is not displayed in the superior new CBCS encasement.

That crease on the CGC copy is a no go for me. CBCS book looks way better.

I would go with the CBCS version, too.

But in fairness to the comparison, the CBCS has taken a grade hit for page color, which is not obvious to us. So it is a better grade cover, downgraded for interior concerns. And I believe that is exactly what we are seeing here. The CBCS looks better, because it is, on the outside.

Hard to tell from just the front covers (obviously the CBCS-graded front cover looks much better).

I'd check the CBCS grader's notes since they are free and available. Assuming 1) no major hidden defects and 2) back covers that are similar in appearance, the CBCS book would most likely be my choice although I tend to avoid SA/BA books with cream or cream/off-white pages.

Judging by just what is shown in the photos, no way is the CGC book a 6.0 by my standards. The CBCS book appears to be a solid grade from what can be seen.

Agree on this.

Besides other smaller issues, the large crease is the major concern. Overstreet at 6.0 says "no significant creasing". At 5.0 says "minor to moderate creasing". At 4.0 says it can have an "accumulation of creases". At 3.0 says it "can have a book-length crease".

No contest!

The CBCS book presents much nicer and the grade looks rock solid.

The CGC book IMO is a gift grade.

CBCS looks 100x better visually. For display purposes it's a no brainer.

@DWeeB1967

- Graders notes -

1/2" spine split top front cover
chip off bottom right corner
small wear & creases to corners & edges some breaks color
spine stress breaks color
light tanning interior cover edges

Looks like the big hits on the CBCS are a spine split and interior tanning. Since you don't really see those things in a slab, it presents way better. I think both grades are reasonable, though.

I have no idea how a book can have that significant of a crease on the right side of the cover, along with a crease/fold line along the spine, and “earn” a 6.0. I would expect a 4.0, be happy with a 4.5, and be thrilled to tears to get a 5.0!

@xkonk - I hear ya, but there is obvious spine splits/tear on the cgc "6.0". I completely get why the CBCS gets a 6.0. Can see the color issues on the bottom of the cover and obviously the "chip" on the bottom right. I should have posted the backs.

cgc

CBCS

I'm certainly not a professional grader, but I even think that crease should be more of a factor than it apparently was.

It's possible the interior of the CGC is in really good shape to offset that, but it just seems like slabbing is one of the few instances where you should judge a book by its cover.

So, yea, @Scifinator, based on the back cover photos and the graders notes, there's no contest. I'd pick the CBCS book without giving it a second thought.

The CBCS copy all the way. Even if the rest of the book was 9.4, I'd never think it's 6.0. Label error? Grading error? I'd like to think it's the former, but I suppose even the most obvious can be missed.
For example:

@KatKomics - The CBCS is actually mine and is actually one of the very few (less than a doz) comics that I am going to hold out for above market prices. I actually just raised last night. I have turned down $750 and $769 offers. If from Forum member, I would probably accept.

As I have this 9.0 as part of my permanent collection, I would only buy another to upgrade, or if ridiculously low priced.

I won't even pretend the play the "well you really can't see everything in the comic and the page color" game to try to justify the same grade.

If there's no cutouts, clippings, or lengthy interior tears on cbcs, then that gigantic, monstrosity of a crease on the CGC tells the tale for me. Not to mention the giant spine creases and dull cover
