Hypothetical: Spending $1,500 for a non-collector friend13877

Play along if you will, just for fun. A 50 year old non-collector friend asks you to invest $1,500 for him in collectible comics. They should have investment potential but they should also make nice display pieces for the next 10 years. The covers should have some Panache and they should not be obscure. They should be mainstream enough to be recognized by and elicit comments from other non-collectors that visit the house. The money can all be spent one one book, or it can be divided into 2 or a maximum of 3 books, using current FMV as a basic guide for cost. What would you buy for your friend if he gave you $1,500 to spend on 1,2 or 3 books? Remember, they are display pieces for 5-10 years and investment vehicles after that. |

Giant Size X-men 1. You can get a mid-grade 5.0/5.5 in around that price. Classic cover and great book with great potential. Edit: and I would drop that on one book instead 2 or 3 books. |

Amazing Spiderman #300 9.6 is averaging $1,350 on Go Collect. Star Wars #1 9.6 is averaging $850. Detective Comics #359 7.5 is averaging $1,400. Avengers #4 5.5 averaging $1,500. Captain America #100 9.2 averaging $1,350. I love the art and the characters are immediately recognizable, and I think all of them are good investment options. That's my two cents, anyway. |

Wow! $1500 is not a lot to spend on displayable investment pieces. If you go low grade, you could get a couple, but you might sacrifice appearance. Cover recognition might alienate a lot of the modern books since this is a 50 Year old person and I would speculate a lot of the company may be of similar age. So, you may be looking for Silver to Bronze Age to meet the criteria. This is difficult. I’m curious to see what people say. There are several permutations available depending on acceptable grades by the investor. So many variables. HOS 92? (Might not have enough “panache”) Uncanny X-Men 94, 137 or 141? ASM 121 or 129? Maybe mid to low grade ff48 or 52? |

I haven't decided yet, but I'm leaning towards 2-3 mid-grade silver age to bronze age keys. Cap 100 and Iron Man 1 come to mind also in $500 range. Many mid-grades present pretty well from across the room and I'm figuring the stress lines don't mean much to a casual observer. Choosing 3 from The Marvel "1968" collection that @Batman66 has put together kind of makes sense to me in this hypothetical. |

Avengers 57 would be a top choice and higher grade would be achievable. It’s an intriguing cover.![]() Another top choice if buying multiple pieces. Nice color pop and easily recognizable characters ![]() Perhaps this classic cover ![]() |

Not sure if this would fall within the pricing parameters, but here are my choices: Option 1 - Amazing Spiderman 252 in CGC 9.8 and a copy of Thor 337 in CGC 9.6 Option 2 - X-men 109 in CGC 9.6 and X-men 121 in CGC 9.6. These other options are above the 3 book limit: Option 1 - A set of The Dark Knight Returns #1-4 in CGC 9.6 Option 2 - Batman 426-429 in CGC 9.8 |

@EbayMafia one thing that I would consider is my friend's personal hobbies and tastes. Do they like horror, MCU or TMNT movies? Then I would lean more towards the comics that reflect their personality.

I guess that depends on the collector but since we're taking hypothetically then getting cbcs graded books would be cheaper now and in 5 to 10 years may be comparable to CGC values which will help if those are being used as investment books.

Mid to High Grade GRR's probably are a pretty good idea for both display and value. When I was younger reprints had a stigma associated to them like a PLOD. Everyone assumed they would never be collectible. But that is not the case.

I'd pick-up a 9.2 or better copy of Captain America #117. The upside of Sam being Captain America in the MCU and on Disney Plus is too much to pass on.

If your friend wants a conversation piece and knows nothing about comics, you have to go with the big, popular characters. Spider-Man, Batman, Superman, maybe an Avenger. To pick one or two from each of those, assuming you would just pick whichever you personally like best: Amazing Spider-Man 300 in 9.6, modern book and hot but will still probably appreciate. Amazing Spider-Man 15 in 6.0/6.5, older book to look classy and should appreciate soon if Kraven actually gets that movie. Detective Comics 359 in 7.5, doesn't center Batman but is obviously relevant, and should take off whenever Batgirl makes it into a movie that doesn't have George Clooney. Batman 66 in 6.5/7.0, a random old issue but with a Joker cover that would prompt some conversations. I don't know Superman keys all that well. Maybe Superman 25 in 8.5 for something old and interesting? For Avengers, I like the suggestion of Avengers 4 in 6ish. The value is Cap-centric, but the cover itself has the key characters. |

Hawkman 4 would be a nice investment choice with a striking cover....and bright future x men 50 with its first appearance of the new Steranko designed logo, 2nd Lorna Dane, Steranko art, etc is perhaps one of the most striking early x books done. It also has quietly moved into a fairly nice investment book the past several years. A kirby cover....Journey into Mystery 103, rarer, hard to find in nicer grades, and a key introduction issue... ![]() ![]() ![]() |

Avengers 1 don't know what grade you'd get for $1500 I sold my cgc 1.5 years ago for $500. Avengers number 1. Everyone has seen the movie. A low grade beater that carries the cover for the grade is all you need. Seriously people. A non collector shows their non collectors friends they aren't going to be picky at the grade. They are going to see a old Avengers number 1 that is priced at 12 cents and the creases on the cover, yeah it's nearly 60 years old. All old things have creases. And everyone knows Avengers. That's the showing display. As for investment, don't invest in collectibles you have no love for as you'll probably get burned in the end |

@southerncross, I follow your opinion. I also follow it with a question. At what point is a rag a rag? Silver age maybe? I feel like copper and bronze you can definitely be picky. Also, said friend may want to display for a decade. Some borderline books with their time periods will be different by then. |
