So, I let some big books go recently to acquire my grail of grails.

There are a few I let go that I care about replacing, but I’m not in a huge rush.

Of these four, in what order would you chase them & why?

House of Secrets 92 (VF-/VF
Hulk 181 6.0+
Daredevil 1 4.0+
Tales of Suspense 52 VF-/VF

I’m at least halfway to saving for one of these. It might not be a bad idea to buy them in lower grades just to knock them off the list & upgrade later.

Another option I’m considering, is simply upgrading my ASM 129 CGC 4.5 to an 8.0-9.0.

After replacing the books listed, I’ll be focusing on upgrading a handful of books that are in my personal collection.

I would probably aim for Hulk 181 first, just because the price seems to be going up and up. Otherwise, maybe put it way down the list for if the price ever comes back down.

Of the others I don't have any 'objective' feelings but if I were buying them myself I would get ToS (although maybe also sensitive to upcoming movie issues), Daredevil, ASM, House of Secrets. That's just my personal preference for the characters.

House of Secrets 92- badassness

Hulk 181 - price keeps going up

DD 1 - just a cool book and the ugly yellow suit is a must have.

The rest

In my opinion I would aim for daredevil and hulk 1st.

Daredevil has been gaining leaps and bounds recently. I bought a 5.5 copy in May for 2100$. January they sold a 5.5 copy on ebay for 4600$

As for Wolverine if he hits the MCU, good luck trying to catch that train.

Regardless of the reasons for going after these books, I say go after Hulk 181 first. It's only going up in value, so the sooner you can acquire a copy, the better -- whether it's for investment reasons or more personal, sentimental reasons.

Hulk 181 1st. Just a book that keeps going up in value. Hot Wolverine key.
Daredevil #1. Keeps going up and I think there is a lot of room to do some great MCU movies with him.
House of Secrets 92.Such a great cover and personally I am a big BW fan.
Tales of Suspense 52. Silver age is a plus. However, I am not feeling that book or Black Widow.

I would take a different approach. If you are primarily buying them online at this point in time and do not have a clear cut first choice, I would do frequent searches on eBay and my favorite sites/stores for all four. See what becomes (or is already available) and at what price, and buy the one you feel represents the best price and also looks/presents the best.

PS - Full disclosure, I have never owned a Hulk #181 or a DD #1. I sold off my HOS #92 and TOS #52 years ago, but replaced the HOS last year.

PSS - Good luck and enjoy the hunt!

Hulk 181 is a book that is plentiful and readily for sale in all grades at any time.........take your time, find one at a good buy and get it then

The TOS and HOS books are dead ties for 1st place, both being key books and the TOS in particular a silver key as well.

The Daredevil book is also readily availible and moves slowly on price gains...take your time and get one at a deal.

Definitely prioritize the TOS and HOS books, the other two take your time and choose your deal

Easy call.

DD1

The BA titles are relatively common, come from the era when books were being avidly collected/saved in multiple quantities, and they're always available in decent lower grades.

And TOS was a heavily collected title as well, despite being published before the saver era began.

DD1 is MUCH scarcer, & waiting to pop.

Easy call...

ToS and HoS are hardest to find, overall; others are common and WAAAAAAAY overpriced. There are several multi-copy collectors who will be severely disappointed when prices crash as they try to sell their copies, especially the green labels.

well...not entirely

Daredevil 1 and TOS 52 were both released in April 1964 however
CGC census figures
Daredevil 1 4895 almost five thousand graded copies
Tales of Suspense 52 1463 graded copies

Even more telling is the number graded above 8.0 For TOS 52 181
DD 1 556

Daredevil #1 first. It still seems to be under valued and the price will just continue to go up.
Toss up between Hulk #181 and House of Secrets #92 as I like both books. I feel Hulk 181 is the stronger of the two and the price will continue to go up but I think the jump in price won't be as much as the last few years and it'll hit it's ceiling soon. DC key books just don't go up in value as much as Marvel keys, but HOS 92 is still a great book to have. This book will get cold again like it has in the past. Tales of Suspense #52 - low priority book for me.

Some clarification:

After attaining my Grail book, I feel fine not acquiring any of these books. I’d like to replace them, but they feel like simply icing on the cake at this point.

I’m leaning towards HOS 92 for a few reasons:

1. My 8.0 was an Anniversary gift from my wife & I’d like to replace it for sentimental reasons.

2. I feel it’s an undervalued book that has (eventual) potential.

3. I can nearly acquire it with the cash I have in-hand.

Hulk 181 is an awesome book to have, & it would probably be my first priority if not for the sentimentality I have for HOS 92. But the spec on it at the moment is madness.

The TOS 52 was the hardest one for me to let go. That book was very hard to acquire in the grade I had. Especially with White pages. And Black Widow is my favorite of the Avengers. But that single book was the difference between a 2.0 AF 15 signed by Stan & a Universal 4.0.

I actually like DD more than Wolverine. So after HOS 92, it’s gonna be a bit of a toss-up depending on what I can find once I’m shopping for round two.

@00slim Totally understand the sentimental attachment you have to HOS92 so if I were you, I'd put that 1st on my list too. But once X-Men (Wolverine) and Daredevil make their MCU appearance I really believe those 2 books will go nuclear. If you really want those books try to get them before an MCU announcement is made.

Can you ask the guy you traded your book to do a payment plan so you can get the actual book given to you by your wife back?

My eye goes to HOS 92 every time and I really should own one but I bought and sold so many copies at much lower prices that it's hard for me to buy back in at todays prices. My big concern with future value is that Swamp Thing has had so many chances to break out and nobody has been able to figure out how to do it successfully on the TV or movie screen. I wonder if it's just a storyline and character that isn't well suited to the screen but works best in comic book form? I also think DD 1 has the upside and a good risk/reward ratio.

Sorry - I edited my post & was saying that DD1 is much scarcer than the two common BA books mentioned, but has MUCH more room to grow in value/price than the TOS.

DD is about 100 times more important than Black Widow as well, so the fact that it's only 3 times as plentiful is another reason to pursue it first.

On a scale of 1 to 10, DD is a 7 on a bad day, and BW a 3 on a good one.

No brainer here; DD1 is unquestionably the way to go.

HOS should be a distant 4th on your list for oh so many reasons, but I'm speaking purely in terms of investment.

Common in all grades, prone to going cold, maxed out, ST1 a superior book in all respects, and the later Moore efforts also of greater interest; you'd be better off buying a Moore #37, as THAT book has massive potential.
