Verified Signatures - Database13834

Collector rtdcomics private msg quote post Address this user
Just had my Jack Kirby (DF) Marvel Milestone X-men fail verification which, although the signature looks very strong, I kind of expected based on

- it was from the DF promotion where the rumour was that Kirby's wife did all the signing
- the signature was on the front of the comic

I have 3 customers that wanted to also submit their copies of this book but I put them all on hold until we 'trialled' my copy, presuming it would fail, to save them the wasted cost.

A couple of months back i also had an 'Undertaker' signature fail, again from DF, who seemed to have abbreviated his sig to fit around the artwork. I would presume then that all of this specific comic from DF would fail where the signatures were the same.

From here though it got me thinking if there was, or should be, a database/list of 'known' comics that will always be rejected. This would save time for both CBCS and the customer and also save the customer money during the submission process. It may even stop people picking up these copies in the first place. One of my customers paid £300 for their copy of the Kirby in a recent auction without any knowledge of the problem as they felt the signature looked legit.

Stupid question. Wouldn't every book need to be looked at by a case by case basis? To make a general sweep of all books would blacklist any possibility that the book is authentic. I know there is a Lotta folks that say Stan Lee signature has changed over the years and some fail even though the submitter witnessed the signature. In my opinion, you can't say that all stan Lee's signature will fail because look at the sheer volume on ebay of his signature....

To deviate slightly. I posted in another thread where Beckett grading does a preliminary scan of a signature for I think 10$. I did it for a signature and got results in less than 24 hours. Since Beckett owns CBCS they should use the same database. That would save a lot of time and trouble in regards to shipping and mailing a questionable book....

Your comment is valid Bronte, but perhaps the Dynamic Forces kirby issues might be its exception. It is fairly well accepted that the books were signed late in Kirbys career when his health wasnt the best and were most likely all signed, the entire run, by his wife Roz, as his "proxy" signer. It has been suggested by many people who knew Kirby that he had as many as 4 ghost signers .....and often at cons people would leave their books at his table to be signed and at some given point Roz would excuse herself, take the entire stack off to some discreet corner or perhaps their hotel room, and sign them all for him.
I, myself intentionally bought a few different books from the Last of the Viking Heroes series that were supposedly signed by Jack Kirby.....they both came back as likely to fail a full authentication . Also done late in his career, like the Dynamic Forces Fiasco, the signatures in these books strongly resembles the signatures for the DF books.

To date I have had a single Kirby come back as likely to pass, and its for the one book that matters to me so life has its moments....they gave this one the thumbs up

I think I see your point, but I have an additional question. If kirby was literally sitting there, did he sign any books? If he did, that would mean there are legitimate signatures intermixed with the proxy signatures right?

In that event, say 99% of the books failed, but that 1 % needs to be accounted for. So saying that chances are if it was a dynamic forces signature its going to fail, is a fair statement, but you have to give it case by case just in case you are the 1%....

Ahhhh.... good ol' Nicky B. from Dynamic F.

I'd almost forgotten about him. It's been awhile since I've cut DF off from my buying for various reasons.
Glad to see the reliable authenticity of their signed past offerings.

@Bronte thats not a stupid question no. In my opinion there are known books that, regardless of how strong the signature looks, are going to be rejected. This Milestone Kirby is a prime example of a known book with a major concern always hanging over it.

Regarding Stan sigs these are more often just difficult to judge because his signature changed heavily over the years. Im talking more about specific COA providers such as Dynamic Forces who pop up constantly with unverified signatures. I would suggest that by the 10th time of rejecting a Kirby Milestone X-men #1 with a COA from DF and with a front cover signature etc that its a known book that will never be verified. Its kind of like known printing defects being overlooked during grading.

I love Stan Lee’s signatures, but I have to agree on the change. Here is a prime example of one. If this was not a witness Signature Series I would laugh at the seller

Wow! That is off to say the least.
It almost brings forth thoughts of invalidity of witnessing.
Of course we all know that there are no shenanigans with authenticated signatures in the industry with facilitation, self-witnessing, handlers, etc...

Do any of you have any insight to Stan Lee signed books with StanLeecollectibles.com COA’s

Do they have a good reputation, are sealed books with their sticker untampered real? Any stories or suspicions Stan didn’t actually sign all of them. Of course I realize that’s it’s possible someone may try to mismatch the COA’s with another book.

Please and thank you in advance!

About a year ago I started a thread asking a similar question. Basically I was asking if some signatures tend to have a higher rejection rate than others, and who those artists might be. I was thinking more of the dead artists in particular. I was hoping for at least some anecdotal insight from those who verify signatures but really didn't get anything. I suspect that not much of this information is maintained.

@EbayMafia to be honest, unless the verification team changes on a constant basis you would presume they actually do retain the info. I would think they would do this to save time. If they have come to a decision that this Kirby DF Milestone book is always fake due to the circumstances you would usually find that information like this is shared within a team or noted somewhere to save others from having to process the comic from scratch when its never going to pass.

From a business financial point of view it wouldn't make sense to create a list to deter submissions of specific books but from a customer service point of view it would be make perfect sense and show they are looking after their customers

Someone from CCBS could prove me wrong but what I understand is that Stan Lee's signature for the past 18 months before his death will not pass verification.

That is the only one I am aware of

@poka Ive seen a few of his later sigs passed through but they were some of the better ones.

It was more the specific event ones with a set COA from the same "witness" like DF which I felt could be easily noted. The ones where its less about how the sig looks and more about the every one has failed from that event.
