CBCS Forum - Monthly (Comic) Book Club - An Introduction13669

COLLECTOR dielinfinite private msg quote post Address this user
So let’s see if we can try something new here. I’m going to see if we can start a book club of sorts where we read through stories and discuss them together with a bit of structure so people can be on the same page, more or less. Hopefully this becomes a fun way to revisit favorite stories, explore new ones, and re-examine some less than beloved or controversial tales.

Topics of discussion can range from the story and art, the creators and the evolution of their work before and after, works that inspired the selection and works they inspired in any medium, and of course related pieces in our collections, among many more.

Each month will be broken up into four weeks. We will aim to read and limit our discussion to 4 issues per week (the exact start and end dates TBD)

The start and stop of each week’s selection will be posted at the start of the week. Please try not to discuss ahead of the selection so we don’t spoil things for other readers but feel free to bring up earlier weeks’ selections into the discussion.

————————————————-
In addition to the reading discussion, Week 1 will also include selecting the following month’s reading. Nominations will run from Monday through Wednesday and voting will run through Saturday. Same voting rules as the cover contest. vote for your top 3 with 3 checks for your first choice, 2 for your second, and 1 for your third. The winner announced on Sunday morning, giving you about 3 weeks to get your books for the next month.

Here are some guidelines for nominations:

The material should be readily obtainable and available in a variety of formats. In other words no nominations for obscure material that has never been reprinted and is only available in the original comics at $50 a piece. Let’s try to keep the barrier of entry at about $20-$25 at the high end. If you have or want to get a rare or valuable edition, feel free (and show it off when it’s time to discuss!), but people should be able to join in without breaking the bank.

Let’s keep the material to about 3-4 issues a week or 12-16 issues a month. We all have our own lives and we all have other things we’re consuming so let’s try not to turn this into a work or a chore. We can re-evaluate weekly reading loads later but for now I think this is a good place to start.

Continuing slightly from the previous guideline, shorter works are acceptable. If that’s the case you can nominate multiple shorter works to roughly amount to the 3-4 per week. That can be 2 six issue mini-series, for example, or a six issue mini and a couple of graphic novels, etc. Be sure to include what order we should read them in.

When you post a nomination please post an image of a collection or an exemplar cover from your selection. Post the exact issues you are nominating so people know what they need to get and also some links for purchasing the collection. Finally, add a few words about why your nomination should be voted for.

With the first week of January down and exercising a bit of creator's prerogative, we're skipping the nominee process this time and I'm putting forth the following candidates for February. Voting will go through Sunday with the winner announced on Monday 1/11 with Week 1 discussion opening on Monday, 2/1.

This is a bit of an experiment so things will certainly change but hopefully this turns out a fun addition to the forums!

Sin City: The Hard Goodbye

Dark Horse Presents 51-62
Dark Horse Presents: Fifth Anniversary Special

Amazon $6+ (Used/New)
Comixology $6

Frank Miller's Eisner Award Winning Sin City began with this story in the pages of Dark Horse Presents. Miller's love letter to film noir and crime pulp fiction felt unique at the start of the 90s, standing in stark black and white next to the bright digital colors, chrome, and foil of 90s superhero books.

I am in if you do Watchmen or the Spider books. I don’t have the other stuff and am not likely to buy something right now. I do like the idea.

Looked on comixology they are doing a 30day free trial for the unlimited subscription. Noticed Watchmen was available. New to the whole digital comic thing but might be the best way to read a lot more.

Any suggestions for a tie-breaking method, just in case?

Reading that comes in a CBCS slab?

I'm sure if we do most 3-checks, then most 2-checks if necessary, that would work. If it's still tied I would say that the two are obviously equally popular and we can just go with what was posted first. Maybe we grant the second-place choice to the next month?

It's gonna be Watchmen!

But a tie could be decided by asking "What would Superman want to discuss?"

(The answer still being Watchmen...)
