Banner ads on the homepage?13621

Okay, seriously CBCS are you guys struggling for cash? I've been seeing banner ads on the homepage of the website (tested in multiple browsers, OS's, and IP - so before anyone suggests it, it is NOT an injection attack on my end), and this just seems cheap/desperate - not at all in keeping with what one would expect to see on the website for a thriving legit business. Not a good look or boost in the confidence department. ![]() edit: Just so its clear - I'm coming from an actual advertising job background, specifically working with web-campaigns, and this is a big negative in the industry from a branding/usability standpoint. I want CBCS to succeed (regardless of any bumps I've had with them with past orders, they still rock at grading) but this inclusion of random banner ads does not convey that they are a premium grading company that is competing directly with CGC. |

Unfortunately, I can see them at the top of the homepage and at the bottom of it, too. Ugh, is there no escaping them?

I'm seeing something at the top of the home page, but if you click "read more" it goes away. Don't many businesses use these, annoying as they are? |

The ad I see is at least comic related, BCW supplies. I figured it was the update on my tablet that caused it pop up a few days ago.

By looking at the Home page I just noticed that a 50% Fast Pass promo is in effect from today until January 5th (same as the one that expired Christmas day, but different code I think).

I see them on Chrome and Safari (across Mac, Chrome, and Windows OS). The majority of non-marketplace / non-retail businesses would not plaster ads on their corporate website (I work in advertising and deal with web campaigns, we would never recommend a client do this), so it seems out of place for CBCS. The main issue is they are fighting to be a competitor of CGC, which is seen as the PREMIUM service when it comes to comic grading. If CBCS wishes to position themselves as something other than second best, they need to convey that in their overall branding online. From my experience this certainly does not help in the longterm for raising consumer confidence or attitudes around a business. There are many other ways to recoup money online in order to offset costs, this however is one method I would not ever recommend. Note however, this is about the HOMEPAGE. I feel this would work fine on the forum area of the website, where it would NOT have a potential negative impact on their overall brand. |

@SauceDog why wouldn’t you want to see special promo along with the notifications on the signing events and TATs? Do you not like save money once in a while? It’s not like the thing is popping up on every page. I don’t see a desperate cash grab; I see giving back. Honestly I didn’t read the entirety of your posts. I got bored with the irrelevance. ![]() |

I kind of agree with @SauceDog . When I first saw them I kind of thought - wow!! why is that on the main page. I don't see adds on other home page sites I visit - what I see is offers for the services and items they sell and links to those items or product lines, catalogues etc. You know what though....I see these same adds on the Beckett home page Funny no adds on PSA or CGC or even PGyou know who! Maybe it's a marketing thing...I think Hertz had the slogan "It's not easy being 2nd" but in fact they were like 6th in the industry at the time...Maybe Beckett/CBCS want to give the look of being 4th or 5th rather than 2nd?? |

I wholeheartedly agree with the original poster on this. I will also chastise the OTHER grading company for doing it as well. The simple rule of thumb for internet commerce is "unless you are a marketplace, do NOT run BS ads on your website. Don't insult your customers by telling them to LEAVE your site." This especially rings true for anything perceived as premium, or investment related, which I would imagine CBCS falls into. Nobody is shopping online at Gucci, and being told to go buy tape rolls at Staples first thing. Just sayin.

CBCS is owned by Beckett MEDIA. It's a media company, and nothing screams media more than ads. It's their main gig. I don't have any problem with an ad or two on a page, as long as I can find what I am looking for quickly. If the ads overrun the page, get in my way, distract me too much, or otherwise make life more difficult, they have to go. If ads bring in revenue that keeps my cost down (grading fees), I'm fine with that. If they could get enough ad revenue to make grading free, I'd be even happier. |

For those of you with ad blockers on, here's what the rest of us see. I have ad blockers turned off because I don't wanna loose the cookie that stores my online submission data while typing it. As a few folks have suggested, they don't have an issue as long is it doesn't get in the way or distract. I'd say this banner ad on the home page advertising "meal management", and taking up 1/3 of the screen definitely counts as falling under both of those conditions. Just my 2c as someone who has designed all of my companies' websites, and done over $50k with CBCS this year. At the very least, shove it to the bottom of the screen. ![]() |

I'm not at all interested in that ad. I'm not at all interested in that main page content. The only thing of interest are the links at the top bar to go somewhere else, where I might have interest. The main page itself is quite useless. I am never on the main page. When I find an area of interest, I bookmark it and don't look back. |

Quote:Originally Posted by HulkSmash We are not talking about CBCS promotions, those promos are below the ad. These are banner ads for other companies and unrelated products (cryptocurrency, baby toys, grade school puzzles, clothing etc...). The random ad zone pushes the actual promos down (sometimes below the fold) so I can't see this as anything but a negative for CBCS. Maybe if you read the post, or looked at the picture, you might have known what we are discussing ![]() |

Quote:Originally Posted by chester15 A fair point...except that Beckett doesn't run these ads on any of its other sites, not Beckettmedia nor the prime Beckett site. The revenue this brings in is going to be very small (based on my experience with similar sized sites and ad servers), and in my opinion not at all worth the negative risk to customer perception of the overall brand (it does make it feel cheaper). In fact if money was the key concern, they could just sell the ad space to relevant companies (local comic stores, online comic sites like mycomicshop) - you earn much more money that way (compared to random clicks) and you get to control which content appears on your website (and this content will be relevant to us users, since those are places we could buy CBCS books) |

Advertising is so prevalent on the internet that I don't even notice it anymore in that way. I expect to see it on every page I go to. It doesn't make me think worse of the company's website at all. I notice when there's no ads but expect to see them everywhere.

I don't post often, and when I do it's usually a shitstorm and a half. ![]() This is no different. These ads reek of desperation. This is HUGELY unprofessional for a brand that's making even a half-assed attempt to appear legitimate. Look at this : ![]() Can you imagine Audi doing this? Tag? Apple? Love the pic, but man what a horrific move on your brand's image. I'm really worried about the future viability of CBCS, not gonna lie. They seem to be making bad decision after bad decision....first the yellow verified, now this? I love you CBCS, you were my first graded book. But man...what are you DOING. |
