Other guys have Chris Claremont for a signing!13560

Just an FYI and my thoughts on it!.

Not sure if I should submit any books.
I think for the most part I have been converted to not wanting 98% of peoples sigs on my books - has to be someone special I think for me to get it now.

That being said...I already have an Iron Fist 1 with Stans sig on it in 8.5 and 100% has multiple pressable defects - although some of the spine ticks worry me i.e. might look tons better after a press but still be 8.5?

Thinking that and maybe Marvel Previews in 7.5?? maybe higher depending on what a press can do...although..again..that is a beautiful cover and a sig might ruin it.

Until both CGC and CBCS offer signatures on the 1st page indicia, I am going to have to pass on all these in-house signings; in favor of obtaining these writers/artists autographs on the convention circuit again on the inside where I feel it's appropriate.

I understand it's a P.I.A. to deal with, but with the current significant signing delays, I'm not sure adding a few more weeks for the handling of those who want 1st page signatures is that much more horrible.

@Nuffsaid111 - He is great, but his signature is hideous and belongs hidden.

I think Claremont wrote about half the books in my collection. I was happy to meet him a couple years ago and had a tough time deciding what to take for him to sign. I decided earlier in the year that I wasn't going to do any mail-in signings though, even for people I'd really like to have, because what I really want is the opportunity to chat with them for a few minutes and the signature is more a memento of that.

Out of curiosity, what would everyone choose to have signed by Claremont. Either in this signing or at a con?

I think I might get X-Men 108 or maybe 161?

Those are less about monetary value and more about value to me.

I'd go with Uncanny X-Men #115 or Marvel Fanfare #1 for his signature.

I really enjoyed Claremont's "X-Men in the Savage Land" stories. And Sauron is a big plus.

If not those, probably X-Men Annual #9 or New Mutants Special Edition #1, the Asgard storyline. That was one of my favorites from the 1980s.

I think I'll leave my Marvel Previews 7 un-defiled! but since the Iron Fist really needs a press for potential grade bump...maybe I'll add his sig to Stans on my Iron Fist #1 and hold onto the book until they re-introduce Iron Fist to the MCU then sell, sell, sell!!!

p.s. #soon - would like to get my magazine sized books into a CBCS holder lol!!!

I have a few Claremont signed books I need to send to CBCS for verified labels. My friend got them for me at a con in person a couple years back, so, they’re legit. (Wolverine 1 limited & on-going in the 9’s & a mid-grade X-Men 129).

His autograph is rather intrusive to the art, though.

@Jabberwookie I went with
New Mutants 1
Uncanny 221
Uncanny 244
Wolverine 1 (ongoing)
Wolverine 10
X-Men 109
X-Men 120
X-Men 129
X-Men 94

I leaned toward first appearances and books that I had nice-ish copies of, aside from 94 which I didn't have and bought specifically for the signing.

If I see him again I would go for some other Uncanny's (maybe 266, 164, Dark Phoenix Saga issues), New Mutants, and break out some old Ms. Marvel.

Here's how I roll.
Signatures on 1st page indicia (for comics that actually have a blank indicia area available)
Photograph the autographs - place a copy in CBCS package in the back when get back from CBCS.

Labels might be illegible, but all 4 issues are signed by the entire creative team (Claremont, Miller, Rubinstein). No defacing of covers. Best thing - Every single autograph was free (before these all these guys started raking us fans over the coals $$$).

I'm thinking that mail in signings will be looked back on as the the time when the signature industry jumped the shark. It's just a big ol unlimited Sushi buffet where everyone gorges themselves on any option they chose. Then you look up eventually and everyone is bloated and nobody wants to see raw fish for a long time.

Got an email the CGC was offering a signing from the Green Power Ranger? And for extra money he would write his name a second time in Japanese letters. Woohoo!

I got this signed last go around and paid for pressing. Was a 9.4 previously and stayed a 9.4 with notes saying there are dents and creases still.

Anyway, I agree with @esaravo the signature isn't the prettiest.

Was thinking of sending in my first appearance of Iron Fist but think I'm going to pass.

If I send something in it will probably be from my Uncanny X-Men collection. Thinking of sending 94-101 in, which aren’t in the best shape since they were gifts from a co-worker.

wellllll.....from their point...once 'fans' started monetizing their signatures it kind of forced their hand. I had a bunch of Neal Adams sigs for free once upon a time but then people turn around and add a $50 or more premium on the book..wouldn't you want a piece of that action?
We can swear up and down that it's for our PC collection but really how are they to know!

I remember those guys showing up with 2 short boxes of books for 1 guy to sign - it's those people who kind of put the first nail in the coffin for free sigs. If everyone had just continued showing up with a half dozen or so books and didn't flip them right away..would we be were we are now??

I’m glad you mentioned this.

I went to an LCS where Al Ewing was signing and at least two people brought their whole run of immortal hulk to sign.

For Al Milgrom, I saw at least 50 copies of Avengers Annual 10 brought up for him to sign.

That’s a lot of signatures for anyone.

Excellent point.
I too, was once the recipient of a multitude of Neal Adam sigs when they were free. At his current rate ($50) I can't pass by his table fast enough or blink as I walk by. He can charge 50 all day; and I will walk by all day.

The pendulum has swung too much on "their" side now where I feel they are raking us over the coals with their exhorbitant charges.

@KatKomics Charging say $5-$25 is a very fair and reasonable development in the signature game. I think the fact that the artists now charge actually adds value to signatures.
It's the mail-in signings that I'm referring to as the "Shark Jump". What used to be a personal interaction that had limited opportunities to occur has been turned into an unlimited commodity. The value of something often has a strong correlation to the difficulty in obtaining it. Now that the significant barriers have been removed I expect the markets perception of value will decline for living artists.

it will be interesting to see if the mail in game keeps up once in-person events are back on..I for one would really just liked meeting the people..sigs were a nice bonus!

That’s the perfect way to do it. The signature thing has gotten way out of hand. The interaction is the real treasure.
