I am certainly no copyright lawyer and I do not know copyright law whatsoever.

But, how in the world does this Ablaze comics get away with publishing a comic called The Cimmerian: Frost Giants Daughter? It states Robert E. Howards character on the front cover and if you look on the back cover it has a quote from "Conan".

Have rights been let go from Marvel again?
I didn't even know this comic was coming out (which has some darn nice covers for Conan fans).

@Nuffsaid111 from what I understand, Conan is in the public domain. And this series is originally an Italian series. Ablaze is doing an AmerEdition of it. But yes, the art is awesome!!!! I believe they did one other Cimmerian series. I'll see if I can find the title.

Ahhhh... interesting.
It'd be nice to have more Conan reads that are more along the lines of the Cary Nord / Tomas Giorello series that Dark Horse did.

@Nuffsaid111 here are the other titles, courtesy of MCS. I have the Red Nails. I enjoyed the art and the story.

Conan is a bit complicated, copyright-wise. In the United States for a work created at that time, I believe was subject to 95 years of Copyright protection, so in the US Conan doesn’t enter Public Domain until 2028, I believe. As a side note, Mickey Mouse is expected to enter public domain in 2024 but we’ll see if Disney allows that to happen.

In the UK, copyright extends for the life of the creator + 70 years meaning Conan is already in the Public Domain in the UK.

The Ablaze comics, I believe, are reprints of a French series, which would’ve followed France’s copyright terms, which follows the UK’s model of Life of the Author + 70 years. So while the original Cimmerian series was free to publish in its native France, Ablaze had to strike a deal to be allowed to publish the series in the United States where Conan is still subject to copyright

The Cimmerian is on my pull list at the LCS, so I've got them all (and a couple of variant covers). It's really good, and very true (obviously) to the original works. Which I still have a couple of that were passed onto me from my uncle.

Only one that I thought was a bit hard to read was People of the Black Circle, which I blame more on the colorist. Everything started to bleed together in its almost monochrome color scheme.

What I remember was that Ablaze Comics got permission to release The Cimmerian in North America as long as they didn't use the word Conan in the header title or maybe even anywhere on the front cover. Of the three stories published so far, Queen of the Black Coast was OK but I think the writer left out some important aspects of that story. People of the Black Circle was a mess, story-wise and art-wise. Red Nails was excellent. I picked up my copy of The Frost Giants Daughter today.

I don't care for Marvel's Conan, some of the early Savage Sword adaptations are good but that's about it. Roy Thomas 'Marvelized' him and I was sad to see Dark Horse lose the publishing rights. They got it right most of the time. Apparently Conan is an Avenger these days. No thanks.
