Quick Question, I'm going to take a look at a Newsstand Modern book later this afternoon. Assuming the book is in otherwise NM condition from a paper perspective, how much of a ding would it take for Sharpie through the barcode. This being the only blemish on the book. I was thinking 7.5? |

Hard to say but 7.5 sounds about right, if NM (Overstreet, not CBCS, would say 4.0 by their definition). This is a sharpie slash, not a printing slash, right? https://rarecomics.wordpress.com/why-do-some-comic-book-barcodes-have-a-line-through-them/ |

@Paulbg2000 If it’s a straight marker line through the barcode it could be a direct edition not a newsstand edition. |

Ok, good to know. Correct, it's definitely a sharpie slash. Direct edition didn't have barcode on front cover. |

I've seen some books like that before amd wonder if it could have been part of the distribution process in some markets comparable to date stamps or if it is shop specific like a store stamp. Interesting topic. Following.

Early Direct Editions had a strike through barcode to distinguish them from newsstand copies to reduce/eliminate fraudulent buy backs. Comic shops got reduced pricing and newsstands were able to return unsold copies; shenanigans ensued therefore the need to distinguish them. The article @jake gave has good info on this. Quote:Originally Posted by steveinthecity This book specifically, I'm aware of all the variants of Direct and Newsstand and the printed slash through barcode. This is literally a Sharpie mark through the barcode on this specific book. The direct version of this book didn't have a barcode on front cover. |

If that marker is literally the only thing wrong, it’s no worse than 9.0

Personally..... If I were looking for a modern book such as this, I would have absolutely no interest in one with writhing on the cover, regardless of the numerical grade one might assign to it.

Book is Star Wars: Heir to the Empire #1 |
