I forget which comic I took this picture of, but the ad price for a GI Joe VHS is $39.95. However, it's $14.95 in the ad on the 202. Were VHS tapes always that expensive?

I love looking at the old ads from East Coast Comics, Mile High, American Entertainment, etc

@Studley_Dudley In the later 70's My father bought one of the very early top-loading VCR's. I believe it cost between $400 and $500 but in the promotion they gave him 4 free blank cassettes which had a value of about $30 each. VHS movie rental outlets required credit cards for security. If you didn't return a rented movie it was typically $40-$100. The rental outlets paid a high price for them and it required several rentals of the tape to return their investment. I remember at an auction my dad won copies of "First Blood" and "Heaven Can Wait". I think we watched those two movies pretty much every time a visitor came to the house, lol. But you have to remember, this was the first time in history that an average person could own a legitimate copy of a movie or watch something on demand. We felt the $500 machine and $30 blank tapes were money well spent. Owning movies on Video Cassette made me feel like somewhat important among my peers at school. A kid said to me "I bet you've never seen a rated R movie" and I would respond "dude...I own First Blood!" lol.

This forum is full of people complaining about a comic costing $4 in 2020 money but every kid can buy one movie for $40 in 1983 money.

Lol, blockbuster paid $40, kids didn't. They'd rent it and if they were rich enough to have TWO VCR's, they'd copy it.

If they were fortunate enough to have two VCRs, they were copying porn.

And to stay on the thread topic if I

My wife's parents still have the rental copy of Sound of Music that they had to buy for $100 after their VCR damaged it. I think that after spending $100 they felt compelled to watch it like 80 times and the whole dang family memorized the movie.
In hindsight, that's probably something my wife should have disclosed to me before I agreed to marry her. That she had memorized every song from The Sound of Music. Yeesh.

@EbaySeller That’s funny me and my brothers rented The Terminator so many times that we probably could have saved money just buying it.

I rented Hot Shot: Part Deux on VHS enough times to pay for it a couple times over.

X-Men #94 for $85.00
Wolverine #1 for #3

I remember the old Mile High ads from 1982-1984, where you could buy an Avengers #1 for $125. Should have been smarter with my spending money, but hindsight, as they say, is 20/20.

I always get a chuckle from the alternative saying that hindsight is 50/50, lol. I took it to mean that even with the benefit of hindsight we would still only make great decisions half the time. Circumstances and personal weaknesses would likely keep most of us from getting too far beyond the 50% threshold.
