Opinion: Additional Cost for Kirby Signature?13387

You do know that the new guy brings the donuts, right? DWeeB1967 private msg quote post Address this user
I'm looking for opinions on this one primarily from autograph collectors or folks who, at least, don't mind signatures on their books.

I've had my eye on a book with a CBCS verified Jack Kirby sig for quite a while. The book is not a Marvel book and is really not even a book that he is famous for working on. However, he did have art appearing in the book.

I'm not a signature collector so if I were to blow off this book, it would be fine. However, it's also a chance to own a Jack Kirby signature and that's pretty cool.

So my question is this: If you were considering purchasing a book and that book just happened to be signed by Jack Kirby, how much of a premium would you expect to pay because of the presence of the signature? Obviously, any book with a Kirby signature would demand a premium over FMV. But $100 over? $200 over?

Anyway, just curious what the forum thought. Thanks for looking.

For one of his later works (I assume), $100 sounds "right". Definitely not more IMO.

Yea... 100 for something obscure / not classic Kirby stuff

For Classic Kirby Marvel (or even DC) - esshhh.... alot more than $100

I'm with @Siggy . If it were a cool book or something Kirby was known for, maybe stretch higher. Or if you're just a big Kirby fan. But if it's a Kirby sig on a fairly random book (did he even do the cover?), I wouldn't put a lot of effort in.

@Siggy @Nuffsaid111 @xkonk I agree with you guys. This book is like $800 over FMV of the book without the signature (approx. $70). Waaaay overpriced.

Thanks for the input. I may lowball the guy with a realistic value. I'm sure he'll decline. If he does, I'm fine with that.

Thanks again. 🙂👍

Thanks @esaravo.

I'm literally looking at a really nice book as I write this, Ed, and considering whether or not want to pull the trigger. It's priced higher than FMV, but it's a gorgeous copy.

Decisions, decisions. 😄

I doubt I'd pay $800 over FMV for a Silver Age FF signed by JK.
Happy birthday

I mostly keep to myself these days, but this topic has drawn me out to make a few comments ......
I have dabbled a bit here and there myself in the kirby market, and landed a few signatures in Viking Heroes books that failed a preliminary screening by BAS.

I have read often and discussed with Siggy in particular that it seems well known in some circles that Kirby used as many as four people he trusted to sign on his behalf....and it is also fairly well understood that at conventions fans would leave books at his table to be signed and at some quiet moment his wife Roz would take them all somewhere private and sign his name on them and return them to the table for fans to pick back up. I am left often questioning how many kirby authentic signatures there really might be and wish I knew more clearly the criteria used to determine the examples used for authentication purposes. It is well documented that Roz often signed on his behalf later in life as his health was worsening, and there is of course a grouping of books offered by Dynamic Forces that tends to never pass authentication either.

Having said that, what I generally see in the market is for most of his later work for DC and more obscure stuff, a kirby signature that is authentic seems to add about 150 dollars to the price ticket for a book of that type...and a bit more for his later years work at marvel.

I have come to understand alot depends on what book is signed or how important that book itself is ...by example, one might expect to pay a bit more for a kirby signed Cap 100, which a fellow member of the forum owns . That is where it gets complicated..how much to add for a signed Cap 100, vs a Fantastic four 48 for instance? I always ponder the specific amount of "drift" there might be in price from a more common to a minor key to a moderate key and perhaps even a grail. It comes down to a serious workout in mental calisthentics to even try and establish a formula or range.
My efforts cannot be said to be entirely unselfish....some who are more familiar with my collection know I own a Hulk 1 , apparently signed by Kirby on the first page. To add to that I have had the signature examined by BAS on the quick evaluation and they stated it would likely pass full verification. How do you price that? What price does one add for the signature of such a milestone creator well placed, on the first page and apparently signed with quite a bit of artistic flourish?

I find the signature placement and style rather perfect myself. So this is a topic I have spent some time watching and trying to get a feel for....a few years back there were two copies of hulk 1 that sold weeks apart from each other. They had identical grades and similar page quality, the main difference being that one was signed similar to mine, and one was not. The spread I saw in the two prices was roughly 2500 dollars and that was for a sale roughly five years ago. ( source for the data was GPA)

So based on that factor, I would feel that a verified signature from Kirby, on something that is probably I am guessing some of his later DC work....but not Marvel and definitely not a more key silver book would no way or shape be worth 800 additional.

I keep seeing those later books Kirby signed moving at perhaps 1-200 over the value of the comic, and the silver books for a touch more.....and I think you almost have to hit silver key level to discuss that type of payout myself.

ps Happy Belated birthday

Thanks for the thoughtful comments and the birthday wishes, @Darkseid_of_town.

Your comments are in line with those of the other folks who commented: no one thinks that the $800 bump in price is justified for a verified Kirby sig on this particular book (it happens to be a copy of Weird Mystery Tales #1, btw). I didn't either and still don't so I'll pass.
