Recommendations for a good scanner ?1319

Collector dmoloth private msg quote post Address this user
My current scanner it not big enough (8 1/2 x 11) and does not seem to cast a strong enough light into the book... although that could be due to the fact that the book is not flat on the glass.

Can anyone recommend a good (newer) scanner that can be attained without breaking the bank?

Scansnap sv600 is what I use. Best I have come across. Other advantage is that it scans with the comic face up so you don't break the back.

Also the software is awesome in terms of adjusting the scans etc

That's a bit more than I was hoping to spend, but I must say (after watching a video) it looks pretty impressive.

Does it do something to reduce glare from external light sources like you often see in photos?

I use the scanner at my work. It's an Epson E11000 large format scanner. it will scan an 11x17" page.

I was recently in the same situation that you're in now. I was looking for a scanner for my graded comics, but the scanner that I had was too small.

There are a couple of things that I learned in researching a good scanner. The first is obviously having a large enough scanning area for the CGC or CBCS case. The second is that it has to be a CCD type scanner.

Scanners come in two types, CCD and CIS. If you buy a CIS scanner, all of the scans of your slabs will be blurry. I'm sure that's not something you want. So, make sure the scanner you buy is a CCD. They are more expensive, but they are also better scanners.

Ultimately I bought an HP Scanjet 8200 off of eBay. It's a nice little scanner and you can get it at a reasonable price. Here's a recent scan I made with it.

A friend uses the scanner at his local library.

In my opinion, the best scanner for slabs is a Microtek i800 plus.
They still make them, but they're not easy to get new.

The last time I bought a new one, there was only one place in the US that still carried (and could get) them.
mindconnection.com though I don't see them listed on their site anymore.

The owner's name is Mark Lamendola, and his email address is comments@mindconnection.com. Try sending him an email and ask if they still carry that scanner.

Otherwise, you can try to pick up a used one. They pop up from time to time.

I only use for raw books and have not had any issues. With slabs you can probably find a better scanner

From a thread across the street:

Epson GT-2000
HP 7310
HP 7400 (7710 is the actual number for a search)
HP 7410 All-in-one.
HP 7780 AIO
HP Scanjet 8200
HP 8250
HP 8300
HP 8350
HP 8390 (according to HP specs)

Microtek Scanmaker i800 plus
Microtek V6UPL
Microteks 9600-9700-9800

Most new off the shelf units are CIS format, will be blurry (see HP 8600 example above). Editing will not eliminate the blurriness.
