CGC has released a video which provides a short summary of their grading process but does provide 1 or 2 tips I found useful.

I had no way of knowing that 9.8 graded copies signed by Adam Hughes weren't what you were looking for. drchaos private msg quote post Address this user

I received the email also. When I read it I wondered if the use of the word "transparent" was a shot at a rival company.

I had read that spine ticks would severely lower the grade on books. The copy of #181 had multiple with color breaks but didn't seem to lower the grade all that much.

Does anyone know how many spine ticks a comic needs to start lowering the grade from say a 9.8 downward?

That's like asking how many licks it takes to get to the center of a Tootsie Pop.

Some of the comments are pretty funny. I'd love to see some slab-crack-regrade videos from whoever. I have more issues than I want to admit that I bought online that I cannot believe were given as a high a grade as they were.

Yes, it depends on the severity. I have a comic from the 80's with 5-6 c.b. spine ticks. But they are all very, very tiny, and the book is a 9.8. That is incredibly rare, though.

Tedsaid - consider yourself lucky your grader was far sighted. Overstreet allowable defects chart would grade your book at a VF and even CGC's grading scale states a 9.8 is a nearly perfect comic with negligible handling or manufacturing defects. Minor handling defects which your book has starts at a 9.6. It all comes down to comic book grading is very subjective. I was looking forward to watching CGC's grading video, however it fell short in my opinion. Nuff said.

That would be 236 licks or 385, depending if you are in a rush or have some time.
